I don’t understand it. Could you explain it to me M: Of course. What do you want to know W: I hope this isn’t a silly question, but what does Fibonacci actually mean M: No question is ever silly. People become learned by asking questions. Fibonacci is the name of a person who is considered to be one of the most talented mathematicians of the Middle Ages.W: So, what is the Fibonacci sequence M: It’s a sequence of numbers introduced by Fibonacci. They are 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and so on. Do you see how it works W: I have no idea.M: Let me show you. The first number is 0 and the second number is 1. Starting the third number, each number is the sum of its previous two numbers. So the third number is 0 plus 1, which is 1. The fourth number is the second number plus the third number: 1 plus 1 is 2. The fifth number is the third number plus the fourth number: 1 plus 2. So the fifth number in the sequence is 3. Are you clear about it now W: Ah! I think I understand now. Thanks so much for your explanation. 17. What do we know about the weather last week A. It was dry. B. This is Alan Rickman here with this week’s weather report. After a week of dry weather, there’s a huge storm coming from the west. We are expecting heavy snowfall and strong winds tomorrow morning. The temperatures might drop sharply with a low of minus ten degrees Celsius. I won’t be surprised if schools get closed. So be careful when going outside. If you have to go out, dress warmly and don’t stay outside for too long. Road conditions might be poor, so avoid driving if you can. You should store enough food and other necessary items quickly, just in case you’ll have to stay at home for a couple of days once the storm hits. On Wednesday, the temperature varies from minus five degrees Celsius to minus eight. It seems that the storm will leave on the weekend with light snow expected. Next month the dry weather will come back, but it won’t bring back the warmth we enjoyed last week, but the severe cold instead. Sorry for all the bad news to those who enjoy outdoor sports. And that’s your weather report. Have a great evening! Now, back to Dan with tonight’s business news. ACash Composition ContestIn support of Financial Literacy Month (April), Michigan State University Extension and 4-H, a youth organization, are coordinating (协调) the Cash Composition Contest. At 2,999m, Jabal Sawda had been considered the kingdom’s highest peak until twin mountaineers, Matthew and Eric Gilbertson, climbed it in 2018, finding it to be about three metres shy of Jabal Ferwa. For more than a decade, the twins have traveled to one country after another around the world, rewriting the mountain record books about places across the Middle East and West Africa. So far, they have reached the peaks of more than 100 countries and newly identified the highest points in Togo, Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast.Matthew, a research scientist at Lockheed Martin in Palo Alto, California, and Eric, an instructor in mechanical engineering at Seattle University, said their work was motivated by a need for accuracy and love for mountaineering. “If we’re going to go through all the effort to visit a country and visit the highest mountain, we want to be sure that we have indeed visited the highest mountain,” Matthew said. “We consider it assistance to future mountaineers to have an accurate survey done so that they can focus their efforts on getting to whichever peak they want to get to.”The twins’ love of mountaineering began when they were children with family trips to the Great Smoky Mountains in the southeastern United States. When they were students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), they started climbing as many mountains as possible. In 2012, after achieving their goal of reaching the highest point of each US state, they turned their attention to the rest of the world.24. What can we learn about Jabal Sawda A. When they were students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), they started climbing as many mountains as possible. In 2012, after achieving their goal of reaching the highest point of each US state, they turned their attention to the rest of the world.(这对双胞胎对登山的热爱始于他们小时候随家人去美国东南部的大烟山旅行。 D。CWhen you’re bored, you might start playing with a ball or other objects. Such behavior is common in people. Other animals like it too—that’s why a dog fetches a stick, or a cat bats at toys. Play is an enjoyable way to pass the time. A new study finds that it’s not just mammals that like to play. Bumblebees (大黄蜂) do it too, making them the first insects known to play.In the study, Hiruni Samadi Galpayage Dona, an insect expert, did an experiment using 200 untrained bumblebees to see if they might play. Of those, 45 would be marked with a number when they emerged as adults.A pathway was set up from the bumblebees’ nest to a feeding area. One side contained small wooden balls that rolled. The other side had the same number of balls, but they were stuck to the floor. Half balls on each side were colored balls. The rest were left unpainted. For three hours a day over 18 days, Galpayage Dona found bumblebees weren’t so interested in the side where the balls didn’t move, but they explored the side areas and interacted with the balls. Once they managed to roll a ball, they strongly preferred that side. They returned, climbing on the balls and rolling them around. She also found bumblebees preferred certain colors of balls.“There’s something about the mobility that is more interesting for the bumblebees than just colored objects,” Galpayage Dona says. In another experiment, she sometimes left the balls out overnight. “When I came in the next day, I would always find some bumblebees rolling the balls.” As with mammals, the bumblebees who played the most were the younger ones. Their play tapered off as they got older. The scientists say it’s not clear why the bumblebees roll the balls or whether they enjoy it. But the experiment raises important questions about how the insects’ minds work and whether they have feelings.28. How does the author introduce the topic A. By describing the fun of play. B. By analyzing reasons for boredom.C. By introducing similar phenomena. D. By presenting animals’ cute images.29. What did the researcher do in the experiment A. She trained bumblebees to play balls.B. She put small balls along the pathway.C. She set up a pathway in bumblebees’ nest.D. She rewarded the bumblebees with rolled balls.30. What does the underlined part “tapered off” probably mean in paragraph 5 A. Mattered. B. Helped. C. Decreased. D. Emerged.31. What can be the best title for the text A. Bumblebees Prefer Shape to ColorB. Balls Are Bumblebees’ Favorite ToysC. Playing with Objects Is Animals’ Second NatureD. Bumblebees Are the First Insects Known to Play【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. 根据第一段“When you’re bored, you might start playing with a ball or other objects. Such behavior is common in people. Other animals like it too — that’s why a dog fetches a stick, or a cat bats at toys. Play is an enjoyable way to pass the time. A new study finds that it’s not just mammals that like to play. Bumblebees (大黄蜂) do it too, making them the first insects known to play.(当你感到无聊时,你可能会开始玩球或其他物体。 根据第三段中“A pathway was set up from the bumblebees’ nest to a feeding area. 根据划线词上文“As with mammals, the bumblebees who played the most were the younger ones.(和哺乳动物一样,大黄蜂玩得最多的是年轻的)”和划线词所在句子“Their play tapered off as they got older.(随着年龄的增长,它们的玩耍逐渐tapered off)”可知,和哺乳动物一样,大黄蜂玩得最多的是年轻的,这说明那些岁数大的黄蜂玩得较少。 通读全文,尤其是第一段中“A new study finds that it’s not just mammals that like to play. Bumblebees (大黄蜂) do it too, making them the first insects known to play.(一项新的研究发现,喜欢玩耍的不仅仅是哺乳动物。 D。DThis year researchers expect the world to snap 1.35 trillion photographs, or about 3.7 billion per day. All those pixels (像素) take up a lot of room if they are stored on personal computers or s phones, which is one reason why many people store their images in the cloud. But unlike a hard on drive which can be encrypted to protect its data, cloud storage users have to trust that a tech platform will keep their private pictures safe. Now a team of Columbia University computer scientists has developed a tool to encrypt (加密) images stored on many popular cloud services while allowing authorized users to browse and display their photographs as usual.Malicious (恶意的) attempts to access or leak cloud-based photographs can expose personal information. In November 2019, for example, a bug in the popular photograph storage app Google Photos mistakenly shared some users' private videos with strangers. Security experts also worry about employees at cloud storage companies on purpose accessing users' images. So the Columbia researchers came up with a system called Easy Secure Photos (ESP), which they presented at a recent conference. “We wanted to see if we could make it possible to encrypt data while using existing services,” says computer scientist Jason Nieh, one of the developers of ESP. “Everyone wants to stay with Google Photos and not have to register on a new encrypted-image cloud storage service.”To overcome this problem, they created a tool that preserves blocks of pixels but moves them around to effectively hide the photograph. First, ESP's algorithm (算法) divides a photograph into three separate files, each one containing the image's red, green or blue color data. Then the system hides the pixel blocks around among these three files (allowing a block from the red file, for instance, to hide out in the green or blue ones). But the program does nothing within the pixel blocks, where all the image processing happens. As a result, the files remain unchanged images but end up looking like grainy black-and-white ones to anyone who accesses them without the decryption (解密) key.32. What's probably the main purpose for people to store images in the cloud A. To save storage room. B. To make photos beautiful.C. To try a new storage way. D. To keep their privacy safe.33. Why might employees in cloud storage companies be distrusted by experts A. They sell users' passwords.B. They have invented new tools.C. They often let out personal information.D. They may steal a glance at users' images.34. What's the advantage of ESP A. It can provide clear images.B. It can decrease the upload time.C. It can classify images automatically.D. It can encrypt data on the original platform.35. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about A. Method of decryption. B. Image-processing technique.C. Separate files of images. D. Data analysis of colors.【答案】32. A 33. D 34. D 35. I armed myself with a pair of clippers and stepped onto the narrow strip of pavement which separated the door from the road. A pleasant-looking red-haired woman answered my knock.“I’m Mrs Dodds from next door,” she said. “I keep an eye on the old lady. She’s over eighty and lives alone.”She led me into the cramped little room. “Here’s Mr Herriot coming to see Peter for you,” she said to the old woman who sat in a corner. Mrs Tompkin nodded and smiled, “Oh that’s good. Poor little fella can hardly eat with its long beak and I’m worried about him. He’s my only companion, you know.”“Yes, I understand, Mrs Tompkin.” I looked at the cage by the window with the green budgie perched (栖息) inside. “These little birds can be wonderful company when they start chattering.”She laughed, “Yes, but it’s a funny thing. Peter never has said that much. I think he’s lazy! But I just like having him with me.”“Of course you do,” I said, “but he certainly needs attention now.”The beak was greatly overgrown, curving away down till it touched the feathers of the breast. I would be able to revolutionize his life with one quick snip from my clippers. The way I was feeling this job was right up my street.I opened the cage door and slowly inserted my hand.“Come on, Peter,” I wheedled (哄骗). As I lifted him out, I felt in my pocket with the other hand for the clippers. Then I stopped. The tiny head was no longer poking cheekily from my fingers but had fallen loosely to one side. The eyes were closed. He was dead.Mrs Dodds and I looked at each other in horror. When I turned my head towards Mrs Tompkin, I was surprised to see that she was still nodding and smiling.I drew her neighbor to one side. “Mrs Dodds, how much does she see ”“Oh, she’s very short-sighted but she’s right vain despite her age. Never would she wear glasses. She’s hard of hearing, too.”“Well, look,” I said. My heart was still pounding. “I just don’t know what to do. If I tell her about this, the shock will be terrible. Anything could happen.”Mrs Dodds nodded, stricken-faced. “Yes, you’re right. Suddenly it occurred to me that I could buy her a new bird in the nearby store. Mrs Dodds also thought it a good idea and even suggested one in the town. I cleared my throat, telling Mrs Tompkin that I was going to take Peter along to the surgery to do the job. I left her still nodding and smiling and, cage in hand, fled into the street. I soon found the shop and luckily there was a green budgie in the shop. With the bird in the cage, I sped back and hung it in its place by the window. “I think you’ll find everything is well now,” I told Mrs Tompkin. It was a long time before I went to see how Mrs Tompkin got along with the bird I bought for her. “How is the bird ” I said. The old lady led me in and then laughed. “Oh, you mean Peter. He is grand.” In the little room, the cage still hung by the window and Peter, the Second, hopped around the bars of the cage, running up and down his ladder. Mrs Tompkin looked lovingly at him. “You wouldn’t believe it,” she said. “He’s like a different bird, chattering to me all day long. It’s wonderful what cutting a beak can do.” Hearing this, I feel relieved — my efforts did bring her happiness.【解析】【导语】本文以时间为线索展开,讲述了作者在为一位老妇人的鹦鹉诊治时鹦鹉突然死了,作者担心这会让老妇人太难过,于是偷偷又买了一只鹦鹉替代,这只鹦鹉非常健康活泼,这让老妇人感到很开心。 某人想到:it occurs to sb that/it strikes sb that②.推荐:suggest/recommend③.认为:think/consider情绪类①.亲切地:lovingly/warmly②.快乐:happiness/pleasure【点睛】[高分句型1] I left her still nodding and smiling and, cage in hand, fled into the street. It’s Saudi Arabia’s best place. B. It’s better-known than Jabal Ferwa.C. It’s Saudi Arabia’s highest peak D. It’s lower than Jabal Ferwa.25. To admire good views of the mountain.26. What do Matthew’s words indicate about their work in paragraph 3 A. It satisfies their need for accuracy. B. It helps climbers choose their destination.C. It makes them focus their efforts on life. D. It deepens their love for climbing.27. What might the following paragraph talk about A. The twins’ other goals in their life.B. The twins’ achievements in finding peaks.C. The twins’ influence on other mountaineers.D. The twins’ experiences in other countries.CWhen you’re bored, you might start playing with a ball or other objects. Bumblebees Are the First Insects Known to PlayDThis year researchers expect the world to snap 1.35 trillion photographs, or about 3.7 billion per day. D. One day I received a call from Mrs Tompkin asking me to cut the beak (喙) of her budgie (虎皮鹦鹉). She’s that attached to the little thing.” I decided to do something for her instead of telling her the truth.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________It was a long time before I went to see how Mrs Tompkin got along with the bird I bought for her.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 展开更多......
