It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was five when she and her mother were trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, and little Andrea leaped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She wanted to fight fires like her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed good-naturedly the way grown-ups do when a kid says they want to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to fantasize about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her, “you’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you can never be a fireman.”
And then, as it tends to do, life sidelined her dreams. She was studying for a degree in aviation (航空) technology — the only female in her class — and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis.
Later, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer, and Peterson spent 31 years caring for him. At 61, she went on an ambulance ride-along. It turned out to be a life-and-death situation, and Peterson felt that long-ago childhood calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with various hurts and ills.
After a year, she told her boss she wanted to be a firefighter.
The fact that everyone else in her training unit was between 18 and 21 didn’t stop her. She passed the written test, she cleared the physical and, finally, that little girl’s dream became a reality.
4 What inspired Peterson to be a firefighter
A. Her physical abilities. B. Her being rescued in fire.
C Her mother’s expectation. D. Her lifesaving experience.
5. Why did the rescuers laugh about Peterson’s dream
A. They thought it was a satisfying dream.
B. They thought she was gifted in being a nurse.
C. They thought it was just a childish dream for a girl.
D. They thought kids should dream of being an astronaut.
6. Which words can best describe Peterson
A. Curious and wise. B. Talented and educated.
C. Creative and devoted. D. Determined and caring.
7. What can we know from the text
A. She was most experienced in her training unit.
B. Her dream came true because of her childhood calling.
C. Her aviation technology enabled her to realize her dream.
D. Years of attending her husband contributed to realizing her dream.
B 5. C 6. D 7. D

Some 20 percent of adults are procrastinators Everyone might put off a task or two, but long-term procrastinators do it at home, at school, at work and in their relationships.
For years, researchers have focused on the personalities of people who procrastinate. The results suggest procrastinators may be impulsive (冲动), worriers and have trouble regulating their emotions. But procrastinators are not lazy. They’re actually very busy doing other things than what they’re supposed to be doing. Though procrastinators may think they perform better under pressure, studies have reported the opposite. And when deadlines are uncertain, procrastinators tend to delay their work.
When people put off a tough task, they feel good-in the moment. Procrastinating is a way to avoid the negative emotions linked to the task. But the relief it provides is only temporary, and many seek out ways to stop procrastinating.
In fact, most research today suggests procrastination is a behavioral pattern, which means it’s something you can change, regardless of whether you’re impulsive. What works best is still under research. Some scientists have reported success with time management. But the evidence for that is all over the map. That’s because poor time management is a symptom not a cause of procrastination.
For some procrastinators, seemingly obvious tips can work. Researchers advise students to simply put down their smartphones. Silencing notifications or studying in the library rather than at home can regulate distractions and keep people on task. But that won’t be enough for many people. Stubborn procrastinators may benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy This type of therapy, which involves managing thoughts and emotions and trying to change behavior, seemed to be the most helpful. Still, not many studies have examined treatments, and there’s room for improvement.
8. What does procrastination mean to longtime procrastinators
A. A personal advantage. B. A habitual behavior.
C. A working motivation. D. An excuse for laziness.
9. What do experts think of procrastinators
A. They are inactive. B. They are efficient.
C. They are anxious. D. They are careful.
10. What causes people to procrastinate
A. Their temporary relief from the stress.
B. Their imperfection in personalities.
C. Their poor time management at work.
D. Their high ability to deal with hard work.
11. What may be the best procrastination treatment according to the text
A. Avoiding smartphones. B. Proper studying places.
C. Good time management. D. Cognitive behavioral therapy.
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第一段“Some 20 percent of adults are procrastinators (拖延症患者). Everyone might put off a task or two, but long-term procrastinators do it at home, at school, at work and in their relationships. (大约20%成年人是拖延症患者。每个人都可能会推迟一两个任务,但长期拖延者会在家里、学校、工作和人际关系中拖延。)”可知,长期拖延症患者不只是在任务上拖延,而是生活中的方方面面都是如此,这说明拖延已经成为他们的一种习惯。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“The results suggest procrastinators may be impulsive (冲动), worriers and have trouble regulating their emotions. But procrastinators are not lazy. They’re actually very busy doing other things than what they’re supposed to be doing. (研究结果表明,拖延者可能很冲动,是个发愁的人,难以控制自己的情绪。但是拖延者并不懒惰。他们实际上忙着做其他事情,而不是他们应该做的事情。)”可知,专家们认为拖延症患者冲动而且焦虑(anxious.),管理不好自己的情绪,干活不偷懒,但是却是瞎忙。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“When people put off a tough task, they feel good-in the moment. Procrastinating is a way to avoid the negative emotions linked to the task. But the relief it provides is only temporary, and many seek out ways to stop procrastinating. (当人们推迟一项艰巨的任务时,他们在那一刻感觉很好。拖延是一种避免与任务相关的负面情绪的方法。但它提供的缓解只是暂时的,许多人都在寻找停止拖延的方法。)”可知,拖延会使人短暂地从压力中解脱出来,避免与任务相关的负面情绪,所以导致人们拖延。故选A项。
根据最后一段“For some procrastinators, seemingly obvious tips can work. Researchers advise students to simply put down their smartphones. Silencing notifications or studying in the library rather than at home can regulate distractions and keep people on task. But that won’t be enough for many people. Stubborn procrastinators may benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法). This type of therapy, which involves managing thoughts and emotions and trying to change behavior, seemed to be the most helpful.
D
At your next meeting, wait for a pause in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.
Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our awareness of silence differs dramatically across cultures.
What one culture considers a confusing or awkward pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of reflection and a sign of respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch (荷兰语) and also in English found that when a silence in conversation stretches to four seconds, people start o feel uneasy. In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds-nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.
In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all. It’s already a failure to understand each other by peaking because you’re repairing that failure by using word.
In the US, it may start from the history of colonial (殖民地的) America as a crossroads of many different races. When you have a complex of difference, it’s hard to develop common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people are verbally devoted to developing a common life. This applies also to some extent to London.
In contrast, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it’s easier or some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well acquainted with.
12. Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation
A. The Dutch B. Americans
C. The English. D. The Japanese
13. What might the Japanese agree with in conversation
A. Speaking more gives the upper hand
B. Speak out what you have in your mind.
C. Great minds think alike without words
D. The shorter talking silence, the better
14. What can we learn from the text
A. A four-second silence in conversation is universal
B. It’s hand for Americans to reach n common agreement
C. English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.
D. The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears
15. What does the underlined word “homogeneity” in the last paragraph mean
A. Similarity B. Difference
C. Diversity. D. Misunderstanding
D 13. C 14. D 15. A
根据第二段首句“Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at most.(在说英语的人当中,可能最多只有一两秒钟。)”和第三段“Research in Dutch (荷兰语) and also in English found that when a silence in conversation stretches to four seconds, people start o feel uneasy. In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds-nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.(荷兰语和英语的研究发现,当谈话中的沉默时间延长到4秒时,人们会开始感到不安。相反,另一项关于商务会议的研究发现,日本人喜欢8.2秒的沉默时间——几乎是美国人会议时间的两倍。)”可知,日本人可能在谈话中有最长沉默。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all.(在日本,人们认为最好的交流方式是完全不说话。)” Great minds think alike without words,故选C。
根据文章最后一句“For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well acquainted with.(例如,在你最亲密的朋友和家人中间,你会比在你不太熟悉的人中间更容易安静地坐着。)”
根据最后一段的“For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well acquainted with.(例如,在你最亲密的朋友和家人中间,你会比在你不太熟悉的人中间更容易安静地坐着。)” 故选A。

A Meaningful Activity
To raise the awareness of environmental protection, our school organized a tree-planting activity in Century Park last Saturday.
With everything ready, we headed to the park where we started to work right away. We were divided into three groups with the first group digging holes, the second planting trees and the third watering the seedlings. Time flied. Within two hours, twenty young trees stood there on the hill, dancing in the wind. Tired as we were, breathing in the fresh air, we felt refreshed and amply rewarded.
Through this activity, not only did we get close to nature, but we learned a green environment was no easy task.

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After they left, I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I’d had lunch. I told her I hadn’t had lunch because I’d been waiting here for help for nearly three hours. The girl said they didn’t have lunch either. She suggested to her parents that we have lunch together. Their truck happened to have some food and some things for the picnic. So we ate together in a vacant lot by the side of the road. During that time, I told about what had happened to me and how I felt. They shared interesting stories about their lives in Mexico and on fruit farms. After lunch, the girl’s mother put a paper bag of fruit in my jeep. I showed my gratitude again and we said goodbye to each other.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. There are some delicate fruits in the paper bag. I was surprised to find the money I had quietly left them. At the same time, there was a note written by a girl, which read “We are very happy to be able to help you. We have encountered many difficulties and been disappointed. But we met a lot of helpful people, which made us feel very warm. To help others with one’s own ability is also a kind of lifting a finger. The beauty of life comes from these lifting a finger. I hope you have a good life and a happy mood.” This made me very moved, and I would try my best to help more people in the future to make our world more beautiful and warmer.

4. What inspired Peterson to be a firefighter
A. Her physical abilities. B. Her being rescued in fire.
C. Her mother’s expectation. D. Her lifesaving experience.
5. Why did the rescuers laugh about Peterson’s dream
A. They thought it was a satisfying dream.
B. They thought she was gifted in being a nurse.
C They thought it was just a childish dream for a girl.
D. They thought kids should dream of being an astronaut.
6. Which words can best describe Peterson
A. Curious and wise. B. Talented and educated.
C. Creative and devoted. D. Determined and caring.
7. What can we know from the text
A. She was most experienced in her training unit.
B. Her dream came true because of her childhood calling.
C. Her aviation technology enabled her to realize her dream.
D. Years of attending her husband contributed to realizing her dream.

A A personal advantage. B. A habitual behavior.
C. A working motivation. D. An excuse for laziness.
9. What do experts think of procrastinators
A. They are inactive. B. They are efficient.
C. They are anxious. D. They are careful.
10. What causes people to procrastinate
A. Their temporary relief from the stress.
B. Their imperfection in personalities.
C. Their poor time management at work.
D. Their high ability to deal with hard work.
11. What may be the best procrastination treatment according to the text
A. Avoiding smartphones. B. Proper studying places.
C. Good time management. D. Cognitive behavioral therapy.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
