A shaking head, new heart colours and a familiar goose are among a new group of emojis (表情符号) set to be released (发布) this year.
Unicode Consortiumlist contains only 31 new emojis, much smaller than last year’s 112 emojis, which included pregnant people and a low battery sign. The goose emoji has drawn comparisons to the hit game Untitled Goose Game, where players take control of a horrible goose. The release has gained a mostly positive response online.
The chosen emojis are selected by Unicode Consortium, a non-profit organization in California. Keith Broni, editor in chief of Emojipedia, said “The Unicode emoji subcommittee want to take more time to consider what symbols we can add to represent what we know or experiences we have had — things like a shaking face or the pink hearts.”
He mentioned people were excited to see the pink heart emoji finally included, but he was particularly interested in the use of the shaking head. “It is most likely to be used when we are mentally or physically shook,” he said, “But there is a lot behind this - how can we communicate what happens to a person when they’re undergoing an earthquake
He added that their designer probably took a healthy inspiration“ from the goose video game for the relevant emoji - but it has meaning beyond that. “In the case of the goose, the concept (概念) goes back to how we use language in an expressive way.” He said, “What other things can we say with these emojis How can we forget the English idiom’ silly goose5 ” Through the emoji, that English language idiom becomes a piece of knowledge that can be represented across cultures.

Mont Kilimaniaro is among Africa’s most breathtaking sites, but hard times have come to the plains below. Death is all around and it’s tragic to behold. The cause is a lack of rainfall in a land where on the contrary there is still plenty of water. Underground springs fed by snowmelt from the mountain, still create swamps(沼泽). The problem is that the absence of rain means grasses and other essential plants are not growing, and the animals that depend on them are dying from a lack of nutrition.
The elephant herds here are among the most successful in the continent. They’re closely monitored and conservationists have given them names. But even these great beasts are dying too, what is for the smaller ones
A drought induced hunger. Since the start of June almost 60 elephant deaths have been recorded. More than half calves were killed by starvation due to their mothers’ failure to produce milk. Tolstoy, a male, was named after Russian. He was 5-year-old at the time of his death. And he was one of the greatest tuskers like one of the greatest alive.
Very sad story. There are some of the last relatively undisturbed elephants in Africa. While poaching(偷猎)has been destructive elsewhere, these animals have been largely spared. Right now, however, the problem they face here is a drier climate which poses the greatest threat to their survival.
There are plenty of people here who care deeply about these elephants, but the sad truth is that conservationists are powerless to stop the dying. Only fresh rainfall and new plant growth can do that. We are waiting for the rains. If the rains don’t come before the end of the year, the death rate will only increase.

____17____
Since most of your major muscles are working when you jump rope, the exercise creates a lot of heat in the body. Your body needs to burn more fuel to produce this energy, so it burns lots of calories. It burns more calories than any other exercises, such as jogging, cycling and swimming.
Improves coordination (协调)
Jumping rope requires good coordination, especially as you advance to more skilled moves. ____18____ It improves coordination by requiring several body parts to communicate in order to complete one movement. The feet must jump in time with the wrists turning in order to create a continuous jumping motion.
Reduces injury risk
With your improved coordination from jumping rope, you’ll be less likely to get hurt either during exercise or in daily activities. ____19____ As a result, you are more agile (灵活的) and your body awareness is improved greatly. This guarantees fewer injuries.
Improves heart health
Since jumping rope gets your heart pumping, it’s great for your cardiovascular system and heart health. Jumping rope can increase your VO2 Max (最大摄氧量), the measure of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can breathe during exercise. The higher someone’s VO2 max, the more cardiovascular endurance (耐受力) they have.
Jumping rope gives us a full-body workout with just one piece of equipment and one move. ____20____ Jump to some music, or take your rope to a nearby park to enjoy the fun.
A. Burns calories
B. Improves muscles

第二节 (满分 15 分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“What will we be singing for the contest this year ” a student from my high school choir, a singing team, asked eagerly.
I hesitated this moment. “I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we’ll skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year.”
“NO!” the kids protested.
“We’ve got to go to contest!”
“In Class A.”
“It’s tradition!”
This was true. Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academics, had reduced my choir to a mere thirty-two students. My section leaders had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with young, inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music, couldn’t hold their parts, and could sing only a simple melody or song.
“Maybe we could enter Class B this year,” I suggested, knowing even that would be a near-impossible mission.
“No!” the kids screamed. “Class A!”
I shook my head, “Class A is extremely difficult.”
“We can do it!” they shouted. “We can do it!”
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks.
But that didn’t happen. If anything, the class became more fixed. Every day they begged and begged and they insisted. Because I had to protect their self-pride I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough. My efforts to prevent their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It’s okay, Mrs. Pliszka, we’ll get it.”
I struggled to make a decision. If I destroyed their hope, would I destroy their spirit On the other hand, if we entered Class A, would they be humiliated by the judges’ comments Finally one morning I walked into class. “Kids!” I demanded. “We are entering the contest in Class A…” The rest of my sentence was lost in screams of delight and applause. As the weeks progressed, each morning the kids practised singing, worked on reading music, learned musical terms, practiced rhythm and marked changes, prepared concert music, and went over and over the three contest numbers.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为80左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world! As my choir went on the stage, I mouthed, “Smile!” They looked confident. I took a deep breath, and we began. They performed masterfully. Two very long hours later the results were posted. I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief: a First Place award with the highest marks of all. All around kids were screaming and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks. I was surrounded by kids who had a dream — kids who refused to give up — kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any student or any class ever again.

8. What emoji was inspired by a hit game
A. Shaking head. B. Pregnant people. C. A low battery. D. Goose.
9. What’s people’s attitude to the newly released emojis
A. Doubtful. B. Disappointed. C. Welcome. D. Indifferent.

11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Emojis are more than a way of daily expression.
B. English idioms found their way through emojis.
C. Different cultures may contain the same expression.
D. The Goose emoji originated from the phrase “silly goose”.

12. What do we know about Mont Kilimaniaro from the passage
A. Mount Kilimaniaro is the most exciting site in Africa.
B. Due to a lack of rainfall, grasses can’t grow well there.
C. All the animals there are dying from a lack of nutrition.
D. There is little water on the plains of Mont Kilimaniaro.
13. What does the underlined word “induced” mean in paragraph 3
A. Caused. B. Distinguished. C. Guaranteed. D. Determined.
14. What can be inferred from the sad story of Tolstoy
A. Elephants all died from poaching.
B. Tolstoy was named after Russian.
C. Animals suffered a lot from hunger.
D. Tolstoy was one of the greatest tuskers alive.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Poaching: A Danger to Animals
B. Elephants: Great Beasts Facing Death
C. Mont Kilimaniaro: A Death Place for Animals
D. Dry Climate: A Great Threat to Plants and Animals

“Class A!”
I shook my head “Class A is extremely difficult.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为80左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world!
