At Beijing’s Palace Museum, it sometimes seems that time stands still, but the clocks keep ticking at a small workshop. This is where Qi Haonan works. As the fourth generation to deal with ancient clocks at the museum, Qi has returned more than 100 timepieces to their former glory.
“Restoring (修复) such treasures doesn’t mean making them look brand new. Through cleaning and restoration. I try to make the clocks return to their former form, restoring their mechanical (机械的) and performance functions (功能),” the 41-year-old restorer says.
Born in Beijing in 1981, Qi graduated from the capital’s North China University of Technology in 2004, majoring in mechanical automation. In 2005, he joined the cultural relics restoration department at the Palace Museum, becoming an apprentice (学徒) of Wang, the museum’s third generation watchmaker. “What amazes me most about these clocks is that they are mechanical wonders combining technology and art. In the beginning, everything in the palace was fresh to me. It made me excited to even think about repairing clocks,” Qi says.
But reality soon weakened his excitement. There is an apprenticeship rule: For the first year, you can look, but don’t touch. “Clock restoration includes too many details. Being in a hurry can do a great deal of damage.” he says.
From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day in the apprenticeship year, Qi did research by checking and taking apart watches and clocks collected from his friends. At the end of the year, he could finally get his hands on a small French clock in the museum. He still remembers the excitement when the hands of the French clock began to move, which took him a month to restore.
“Now I have two apprentices. They both have their unique skills. These skills will make us better at restoring the treasures.” Qi says.
24.What is Qi’s task at the museum
A.Making the clocks look as new as possible.
B.Keeping the clocks clean and well preserved.
C.Bringing back the appearance and functions of the clocks.
D.Improving the performance of the clocks to be used in real life.
25.What is the work of restoring clocks like
A.Simple. B.Demanding. C.Profitable. D.Threatening.
26.Which of the following can best describe Qi
A.Creative and honest. B.Careful and energetic.
C.Curious and humorous. D.Patient and devoted.
27.What is the suitable title of the text
A.A Man with Time on His Hands B.Amusing Events in the Palace Museum
C.An Apprentice Making Wonders D.Ancient Clocks Housed in the Museum

From this September, the new policy on students’ sleeping time set by the Ministry of Education has been officially carried out nationwide. According to the new policy, the first class in the morning at primary schools is not supposed to be earlier than 8:20, and that of high schools no earlier than 8:00. Schools are also not able to require students to come in before class for any learning activities. If possible, schools must also guarantee nap time during lunch break for students. The new policy shows the importance the government attaches to students’ health.
Deng Mengyu, a high school English teacher from Shenzhen Hongshan Middle School, said that their school had already put some measures into effect to make sure that students were well rested and using their time effectively. “We encourage students to manage their morning time by themselves instead of sitting in the classroom,” she said. Some students need more sleep while others prefer doing exercise to start the day. So the school’s dormitories open doors at 6:00. At noon, students will have a one-hour nap time, ensuring that they can learn effectively in the afternoon.
Zheng Xiaowan, a high school student also from Shenzhen Hongshan Middle School supports this policy. She believes that the quality of studying is not necessarily related to the length of time spent on it. “When well rested, students’ psychological burden (负担) will be reduced accordingly, and they will be more ready for study tasks,” she said.
Meanwhile, there are also voices expressing concerns. “The new policy is a challenge to our self-discipline,” said Zhang Fuyue from Chaoyang No. 2 High School, Liaoning Province. “More sleeping time can lead to oversleeping in the morning or staying up late at night.”
The intention of the policy is obviously positive. With efforts from both schools and students, the policy can lead to expected results.

From his uptown Manhattan home, Samir Kumar can usually see skyscrapers (摩天大楼) downtown. But this week, as smoke from wildfires raging in the western United States and Canada stretched all the way to the East Coast, the city skyline was invisible.
Currently, nearly 300 wildfires are burning in British Columbia and about 80 are blazing through states in the U. S. West The fires get worse due to heat waves and prolonged (持续的) drought in the west, two weather patterns made more extreme by climate change.
As the smoke spreads across the country and exposes millions of people, the health impact becomes more widespread among the most vulnerable (易受伤的). In addition to causing breath problems, the smoke can lead to poor heart health. What’s more, smoke from wildfires could make it harder for people to fight off COVID-19 infections and the emerging variants (出现的变体) because their immune (免疫的) systems are already battling pollution. Studies have shown that people exposed to air pollution are more likely to die from COVID-19.
For the first time in its history as a state, California’s population is decreasing Falling birth rates, high housing prices and high taxes have been factors for years, and COVID-19 has strengthened the trend, delaying planned moves into the slate. Many survivors of wildfires have also chosen to rebuild in different states. “If I was starting to raise children… I probably would leave this state.” says Hertz-Picciotto, a director of the university’s health science center. She plans to spend several weeks during the height of wildfire season in August away from her home in northern California, where wildfires have become common.
Reducing air pollution from wildfire smoke in California and the rest of the country will require reducing the number and size of wildfires themselves. Lawmakers have introduced laws aimed at better managing forests, training more firefighters and making infrastructure (基础设施) more fire resistant.
“Ultimately until we stop burning fossil fuels. I don’t see why it’s not going to get worse. It certainly can’t get better,” says Hertz-Picciotto.
32.What’s the function of Paragraph 1
A.To explain the concern of wildfires.
B.To introduce the spread of wildfires.
C.To describe the situation of wildfires.
D.To demonstrate the threat of wildfires.
33.What worsens wildfires
A.Climate types. B.Human activities.
C.Extreme weather. D.Climate models.
34.What does wildfire smoke cause according to the text
A.Strong immune systems.
B.Common breath problems.
C.Emerging infectious discases.
D.California’s population growth.
35.What is advised to tackle wildfires
A.Restricting fossil fuels use.
B.Moving away from home.
C.Avoiding exposure to fires.
D.Fighting fire with fire.

The possibility of being killed on a single airline flight is one in 4.7 million. Here are some lifesaving habits you are supposed to remember every time you fly.
Your carry-on bag
The safest thing to do with your carry-on is leave it on the plane. Flight crews ask you to keep your luggage clear of the aisles (通道) for a reason. 36 With as few as 90 seconds to evacuate (撤离) a burning place, the precious time spent reaching for luggage could be a life and death decision for someone.
Your seat
37 The safest place to sit on a plane is behind the wings. A Popular Mechanics study of 20 commercial jet crashes with both fatalities (死亡) and survivors found that passengers seated in the rear cabin (behind the wings) had a 69 percent chance of survival, compared with just 49 percent for those in first class.
During a crash
The first thing you should do during a crash is put on the oxygen mask the minute it drops.
During a loss of cabin pressure, the fall in oxygen can knock you unconscious in as little as 20 seconds. 38 You can’t help if you can’t breathe.
Listen to your flight attendants. Most importantly, through any emergency, be nice to the flight attendant.
What to wear
39 The US National Transportation Safety Board says that 68 percent of plane crash fatalities occur in post-crash fires, not in the initial impact.
Fortunately, here’s what you can plan for days in advance while you pack your suitcase: on the day you’re flying, avoid wearing synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. Instead, choose natural materials like cotton or wool. It’s also a good idea to wear long pants (like jeans) and a long-sleeved shirt for extra protection from flames and sharp objects. 40
Sippers might seem like a good idea for braving airport security, but in the chaos of a crash or evacuation, they’ll only slow you down.
A.You can narrowly escape from an air crash.
B.Always secure your oxygen mask before helping others.
C.Good mentality (心态) of a pilot is a necessity for safe flight.
D.Besides, the best shoes to wear on a plane never leave your feet.
E.The safest way to dress on a plane is avoid anything easy to catch fire.
F.In the event of an evacuation, you don’t want it blocking an escape route.
G.In the event of an evacuation, the closer you are to an exit, the higher the chance you’ll have to escape safely.

The Comeback
Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink(溜冰场). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
“If I can win today,” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.”
Laurie was told that she had a tough competition this year, and a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. “She is the one you have to beat this year,” the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dumped some of her belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a sound.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competitor,” thought Laurie, “Because of her, I may lose tonight.”
“This costume(服装) was my mom’s idea,” Jinny started the conversation, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. “ looks like a flag.”
Laurie couldn’t keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s skating bag. “Something fell out of your bag,” Laurie said.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
“Jinny,” called someone, “You’d better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away.”
“I thought I gave him my music tape an hour ago,” said Jinny, “Tell him it’s the green box with my initials written in white in the right-hand corner.”
“He said you never gave it to him. and he’s getting angry.”
“Then I don’t know what I did with it,” said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table.

【原文】M: One day, a garbage collector came to Ghaliya’s house in Jakarta. The man asked if she had an old mobile phone his children could use to get on the Internet. The man said it doesn’t matter if it is the ugly one, as long as his children can use it for learning from home.
Ghaliya works for a national newspaper. Shortly after the coronavirus hit Jakarta, she and 11 other journalists organized a group to provide food and money to people in need. They started hearing from parents who wanted their children to study online but lacked a way to use the Internet. Ghaliya thought of her meeting with the garbage collector when she and her group decided to provide mobile phones to poor students.
When the journalists announced their activity through social media, many people donated second-hand phones, while others gave cash donations. As of November, the journalists had collected more than 200 mobile phones and donations of more than $35,000. They used the money to buy more phones. They also paid for Internet use for those needing it. Currently, nearly 300 phones have been given to the students.
