Bamboo is a wonderful plant for many people around the world. There are over 1,000 uses for it.
People make tables, clothes, medicine, and musical instruments(乐器)with it. Pandas may eat bamboo every day, and people can also eat it.

The Chinese made a bamboo bridge over the Min River in Sichuan, China almost 1,000 years ago. You can still visit it today. Also, bamboo is still used to build houses today, especially in China and Philippines.
As a part of history, bamboo is very important. The great scientist Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb (灯泡), but he made it perfect. He wanted the material inside to burn for a long period
of time. He tried over 1,000 different types of materials. However, none worked very well. One day, he tried to use a piece of bamboo and the light bulb lit up for over a thousand hours. This invention helped other scientists to make the modern light bulb we use today.

On the first day of school, our teacher introduced himself and challenged(挑战) us to get to know someone new. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find an old lady looking up at me with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome! I’m Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug ” I laughed, “Of course! Why are you in college at such a ‘young’
age ” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married( 结婚), have
children and then travel around.” “Are you serious ” I asked. I wondered why she challenged herself such a thing at this age. “I always dreamed of having a college education, and now I’m getting one.” she told me.
We became friends. Wherever she went, she was popular among young students. She loved to talk with us and enjoyed all the attention(注意)from others. Listening to this human “time machine” was so interesting, when she shared her years of wisdom (智慧) and experience with us.
At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a meeting. I’ll never forget what she told us. “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only a few secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.” she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t need any talent( 才能 ) or ability,” she added. “But growing up requires finding the
chance in change. Have no regrets(遗憾). People usually don’t have regrets for what they did, but for things they did not do.”
At the year’s end, Rose finished the college education she had begun all those years ago. One week later, Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Why did Rose challenge herself to go to college at such a ‘young’ age
Because she wanted to meet a rich husband and get married.
Because she enjoyed staying with young people.
Because she wanted to realize her dream.
Because she planned to share her wisdom and experience with young people.
According to the passage, which of the following words can NOT describe the old lady
A. humorous B. hard-working C. brave D. handsome
What is the correct order of the following events
a. Rose explained why she went to college. b. Rose gave an inspiring(鼓舞人心的) speech.
Rose finished college. d. Rose introduced herself to the writer. e. Rose died in her sleep.
d-a-c-b-e B. d-a-b-c-e C. a-d-b-c-e D. a-d-c-b-e
What can we learn from Rose’s speech
The more you laugh, the younger you will be.
Dreams can help people stay young.
If we have no talents or abilities, we won’t grow old.
Old people seldom have regrets.

A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden; the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red. Suddenly their eyes happened to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them. “Would you tell me, please,” said Alice, a little timidly, “why you are painting those roses ”
Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two. Two began, in a low voice, “Why, the fact is, you see, Miss, this here should have been a red rose-tree, and we put a white one in by mistake; and, if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know. So you see, Miss, we’re doing our best, before she comes, to—” At this moment, Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden, called out, “The Queen! The Queen!” and the three gardeners immediately threw themselves flat upon their faces. There was a sound of many footsteps and Alice looked round, eager to see the Queen. First came ten soldiers carrying clubs, with their hands and feet at the corners: next the ten courtiers; these were decorated all over with diamonds. After these came the royal children; there were ten of them, all decorated with hearts. Next came the guests, mostly Kings and Queens, and among them Alice recognized the White Rabbit. Then followed the Knave of Hearts, carrying the King’s crown on a crimson velvet cushion; and last of all this grand procession came THE KING
AND THE QUEEN OF HEARTS. When the procession( 队伍) came opposite to Alice, they all
stopped and looked at her, and the Queen said seriously, “Who is this ” She said it to the Knave of Hearts, who only bowed and smiled in reply. “My name is Alice, so please Your Majesty,” said Alice very politely, but she added to herself, “Why, they’re only a pack of cards, after all!”

The computer scientist Alan Turing is on the UK’s new 50 note(纸币). The Bank of England
made the decision in 2019, and the note became available in June 2021.
Born on June 23rd, 1912, Turing was a talented student. He showed a natural gift for math and
science from a young age. When World War II broke out, he played an important role in breaking
German codes(密码). He developed a machine, one of the world’s earliest computers, to help with
this. His work brought the war to an early end and saved millions of lives.
After the war, Turing continued his work with computers. He also got the ball rolling on
artificial intelligence (AI). So, people call him “the father of AI”.
Although Turing lived a short life of 42 years, he made great contributions(贡献) to the
development of computer science and other fields. And that’s why he was chosen for the 50 note, on
which there are pictures of him and his work and one of his quotes. It is truly a meaningful way to
memorize(纪念) the great scientist.

Bamboo is a wonderful plant for many people around the world. There are over 1,000 uses for it.
People make tables, clothes, medicine, and musical instruments(乐器)with it. Pandas may eat
bamboo every day, and people can also eat it.
The fastest growing plant in the world is bamboo. Some bamboo grows so quickly that people
say they can watch it grow. The speed of growth depends on the type of bamboo, the earth and the
season. Normal bamboo grows 3—10 cm a day. It usually grows in tropical (热带的) areas. It can also
be found in other parts of the world. Bamboo plants are found in Asia, Australia, parts of Africa, and
South America.
One of the world’s oldest building materials is bamboo. Like today, people use it because it’s
very strong. They use it to build houses, boats, and bridges. The Chinese made a bamboo bridge over
the Min River in Sichuan, China almost 1,000 years ago. You can still visit it today. Also, bamboo is
still used to build houses today, especially in China and Philippines.
As a part of history, bamboo is very important. The great scientist Thomas Edison did not invent
the light bulb (灯泡), but he made it perfect. He wanted the material inside to burn for a long period
of time. He tried over 1,000 different types of materials. However, none worked very well. One day,
he tried to use a piece of bamboo and the light bulb lit up for over a thousand hours. This invention
helped other scientists to make the modern light bulb we use today.

On the first day of school, our teacher introduced himself and challenged(挑战) us to get to
know someone new. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned
round to find an old lady looking up at me with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome! I’m Rose. I’m 87
years old. Can I give you a hug ” I laughed, “Of course! Why are you in college at such a ‘young’
age ” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married(结婚) , have
children and then travel around.” “Are you serious ” I asked. I wondered why she challenged herself
such a thing at this age. “I always dreamed of having a college education, and now I’m getting one.”
she told me.
We became friends. Wherever she went, she was popular among young students. She loved to
talk with us and enjoyed all the attention(注意)from others. Listening to this human “time machine”
was so interesting, when she shared her years of wisdom (智慧) and experience with us.
At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a meeting. I’ll never forget what she told us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only a
few secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a
dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.” she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older.
That doesn’t need any talent(才能)or ability,” she added. “But growing up requires finding the
chance in change. Have no regrets(遗憾). People usually don’t have regrets for what they did, but for
things they did not do.”
