(2023·江苏盐城· 统考中考真题)When Mark walked empty-handed up the sand, the sun was shining brightly. The watching children were as disappointed as he was. They looked at each other and spoke softly
so he couldn’t hear.
“Is that all ”
“Is he giving up ”
But Mark wasn’t giving up. He rested on the hot sand. He ate some chocolate biscuits and fed energy back into his body. Slowly his strength and determination returned. “Would the crayfish(鳌虾) still be there ”

(2023·江苏南通 · 统考中考真题)Jordan had his eye on a scoring record. Jordan took a deep breath
as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. Maybe today I’ll make history, he thought.
The city’s youth basketball league was holding a celebration. Today’s championship game marked 50
years since the league’s first title game (冠军争夺赛).
Before the game, Jordan looked over a special program. It listed the winners of each championship game
and the top scorers.
Jordan stopped when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. “Devin, look!” he said to his friend, “You see who has the all-time record My dad! Twenty-four points. But he never told
me that.”
“Twenty-four points,” Devin said. “That’s great.”
Jordan’s best was 19 points. He was the league’stop scorer.
When his parents showed up at the gym, Jordan brought the program over to them.
His dad laughed. “I had quite a game that day,” he said. “But look at the score. I prefer to trade all my
points for a win.”
Jordan hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost by one point.
“That was a great group of teammates,” Dad said. “I’m still friends with a lot of them.”
As game time came near, Jordan slapped hands with his teammate Tara and then started to warm up.
The courts filled up quickly.
Jordan felt strangely calm. He’d played so many games in this gym that it was like his own home. Jordan
had led his team to a victory over the Lions last season. Why shouldn’t today be like that
Jordan grew even more confident when he hit the first 2 shots (投篮).
The Lions called a break. Jordan ran to the bench and jumped up and down with excitement.
“Great start,”Coach said. “But those guys are tough. They’ll come back on us.”
He was right. By halftime, the Lions had pulled ahead, 27-24.
Jordan looked up at his parents. His dad nodded and called, “Great work!”
But Jordan didn’t feel quite as confident as he had before.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second half, with neither building a lead.
Eleven seconds left. The scoreboard was clear: LIONS 51. BADGERS 51.
Coach told Jordan to bring the ball up the court. “Look for Devin inside, but take the shot if you’re
open,” he said.
Jordan glanced at his dad again. His dad pointed to Jordan, then held up two fingers on one hand and
three fingers on the other.
“Me ” Jordan mouthed.
Dad nodded. Jordan had scored 23 points. Another basket would break the record. And it was the right
time to do it!
Jordan ran right, then left, but he was still a long way from the basket.
The viewers started counting the seconds. “Four... three... two.”
Jordan rose to shoot. As the Lions rushed toward him, he passed the ball to Devin—wide open near the
basket.
Devin turned and shot. The ball fell cleanly through the net for the winning points.
“Yes!” Jordan shouted. After celebrating with his team, he ran to hug his parents. “You still have the
record,” he told his dad.
Dad smiled. “You have something more important. A championship. And great teammates.

Another summer Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn’t watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. “Kee-aah!Kee-aah!” The gull’s cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running
towards water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things.

As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather She searched the sky for an answer. age of two. Then he lived with his grandpa in a small house. Life was harder for them.
Their life depended on Nello’s grandpa. Every morning, the old man would collect fresh milk from one house to another. He then had to load (装载) the milk on a cart and sent it to the city. Growing up a little

the window of the candy shop I could see tubes of colorful jelly beans. A sign on the window’s glass read
LOST: Gold and blue necklace. Verry special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924.
Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster and a border made of
orange exclamation points.
The necklace looked different from the one I clutched (紧握) in my pocket, I decided. Rounder, bluer.
The poster appeared old and weathered. It must have been put up months ago.
“Hey,” Sam asked, “are you coming with me ”
We continued to walk, and I noticed four more posters. Someone must have returned that necklace by
now, I thought.
Once home, I placed the necklace into my old yellow retainer box. I’d cleaned it out and made it my special place for special things. So far, it held twin miniature seashells, a pebble that looked exactly like a
bird’s egg, and 11 half-burnt birthday candles.
I looked at the stone, so clean and polished. Could it be Chrissy’s Was it her “very special” necklace
“Uncle Coop,” I called, “would you take me to the store ”

the number on the poster.

“Hi,” I said, ▲ . “Is this Chrissy ”
“Yes.”
“Um, my name is Ryan. I think I may have something that belongs to you.”

sharing an order of sweet-potato fries while Uncle Coop and Chrissy’s dad drank coffee at the counter.
“It was a gift from my mom,” she said, “before she got sick.”
Chrissy looked down at the blue stone in her hand.
“I’m really sorry,” I said. “Holding on to it somehow makes things a little better,” she said. “Do you

Poems from Tang and Song dynasties, operas from Yuan dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the
poems by Liu Yuxi(772-842), a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better
than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of
common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though
being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that
in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu’s essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell(《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also showshow he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, “be fragrant because of my virtues”( 斯是陋室, 惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious
food, and even to gain knowledge.
25 .Which dynasty is the poem Song of Autumn written in

27 .Which of the following is the feature of Liu Yuxi’s works according to the passage
A .Expressing personal feelings.
B .Describing daily life of young people.
C .Picturing blue sky and a crane.
D .Writing songs according to music.
28 .How did Liu feel about living in a humble cell in the writer’s opinion
A .Strange. B .Unhappy. C .Satisfied. D .Lonely.
29 .Influenced by Liu Yuxi, which of the following does the writer think is the most important
A .To be a respectable man.
B .To live in a big house.
C .To wear beautiful clothes.
D .To gain more knowledge.

It was my first day at school. It was also Miss Caroline’s first day to be a teacher.
Miss Caroline began the day by reading us a story about cats. Then she started to teach us the alphabet
(字母表).
When Miss Caroline discovered that I was literate (有读写能力的), she said, “Tell your father not to
teach you any more. It’s best to begin reading and writing with a fresh mind.”
After supper that night, Atticus sat down with the paper and called, “Scout, ready to read ”
I told Atticus I didn’t feel very well and didn’t think I’d go to school any more if it was all right with
him.

“But if I keep on going to school, we can’t ever read any more …”
“That’s really worrying you, isn’t it ”
“Yes, sir.”
When Atticus looked at me, I saw the look on his face that always made me expect something. “Do you
know what a compromise (妥协) is ” he asked.
