Passage 1
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Jordi, wake up!” my father calls in the hallway.
I quickly get up and put on the uniform of our team. All my life, I’ve watched my parents compete. But I will participate in the human pyramid building for the first time today!
When we get there, the town square is already crowded. While we wait for our turn to compete, my friend Tomeu comes to stand with me. He and his family are also part of our team. Tomeu has competed before.
“What if I’m not ready for this, Tomeu ” I ask.
“We are never ready, Jordi. None of us who compete in the human pyramid building knows for sure how it will go,” he says and gestures towards the pyramid going up in front of us. “Just like those people, you must have faith in those below who lift you up, and you must trust yourself.”
I nod my head to show that I understand. I will do my best to follow his advice.
Soon, it is our turn. I gather with my team in the centre of the square and turn my attention to the task at hand.
We must first make the base for our pyramid. My father and three of the strongest men stand in a circle facing each other as they hold tightly to each other’s arms. Four more strong men step behind, each holding his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then as many as fifty more men and women crowd behind them and begin pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together. Four smaller men climb onto the backs of the original base group and stand on their shoulders. They then grab onto each other’s arms and hold firmly, creating a strong second level. I can see that my father’s face is red as he works hard to be strong for the person on his shoulders. Our pyramid is growing taller and taller and eventually it is my turn to climb to the top of the pyramid and stand on my mother’s shoulders.

Passage 2
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Bruce had a sweet tooth during his childhood, but it was not just sugary snacks that he desired. Being raised in a poor family was a bittersweet experience, but it gave him adaptability and ambition.
When Bruce was young, his mother would tell him that the candies in the store’s checkout line belonged to the cashier. She said that because she could not afford a 50 cent chocolate bar. Nevertheless, he saw through her trick and made a promise that he would grow up to be wealthy enough to buy what his family needed.
Bruce’s father worked hard to make money outside, so he spent less time at home. Instead of focusing on their economic instability, Bruce’s mother selflessly pushed her children to strive for success so that they could lead a more comfortable life later. She worked for long hours every night and struggled to pay the minimum dues on her bills. Still, she would find time to read with Bruce and his sister, Alice. Their mother taught them the value of perseverance, education, and moral fibre. Despite lack of their father’s company, they were loved and nurtured just as much.
However, not all of life’s milestones were easy. Some, like moving and being helpless, left Bruce with an endless bitter taste. He had to deal with many problems when they moved into Maryland, several states away from their roots in Georgia, to make a living. The first few months were great: baseball games, family trips to the mall, dinners, movies, etc. It felt like they were the perfect family. Then things changed. Baseball games were too expensive, and trips to the mall were replaced with days Bruce and Alice spent isolated in the study.
As the brother and sister grew up, money was even tighter. They spent many years living in a very poor family. Even so, their mother inspired them to keep trying and working academically. They even cooperated with each other and developed a computer system. Alice was joking about patenting it someday. But as the saying goes, “Good things never come easily”, and success requires setbacks.

Passage 3
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a train to Smithville, a man happened to sit down next to a young man no more than 17 years old. Because the boy was tense, the man wondered what could be worrying him. Whatever it was, the boy’s tension was clear.
The boy kept staring out of the window, paying no attention to anyone else on the train. The man opened up a book and started reading. Now and then, he would look up and see the boy’s face pressed against the window. He sensed that the boy was fighting to keep from crying.
Finally, the boy asked the man, “Do you know what time it is And do you know when we are to arrive at Smithville ” The man gave the boy the time. Then the boy told the man the whole story of his life. “Four years ago,” he said, “I did something bad hurting my dad, so bad that I had to run away from home. I couldn’t face my father. So I left without even saying goodbye to him. Since then, I have worked here and there. I never stayed very long in one place. I’ve been pretty lonely. Until finally, I decided to go back to my father and apologize to him.”
The man went on to ask, “Does your father know you’re coming ” And the boy responded, “He knows I’m coming, but I don’t know if he will be there. I sent him a letter. I didn’t know if he would still want me back. I wasn’t sure if he would forgive me. So in my letter, I told him that if he wanted me to come home, he could put a sign on a tree which is a few hundred yards before the railroad station in Smithville. I told him that I would look for a yellow ribbon(丝带) on one of the branches of that tree as the train passes. If there is a yellow ribbon on the tree, then I’ll get off. If not, then I’ll just keep on riding to wherever this train goes.” The two of them were now waiting for Smithville.

Ahmad sat at a table in the school cafeteria. The election for the fifth grade class president was only about two weeks away, and Ahmad knew it was time to begin seriously campaigning.
“I think you need a catchy slogan,” said his friend, twirling(旋转) a pencil as he thought.“How about Authentic and Approachable: Always Ahmad ” Ahmad beamed.“It’s got a nice ring to it.”
“You need something that people will remember. They won’t forget that Olivia was the fourth grade president last year and they’ll like the fact that she has experience,” his friend added. Ahmad nodded, grinning. “I know, but I think I can bring some fresh ideas. Do you know Olivia’s plans for the campaign ”
Olivia, meanwhile, sat at her kitchen table with her twin sister. They were eating cupcakes while discussing what to put on the signs they planned to make. At the centre of the table were poster boards in bright colours, markers, pens, coloured pencils, and crayons.
“Where should we start ” asked her sister, brushing the cream from her hands. “What do you want people to know about you ” Olivia raised her head and thought for a moment. “I want them to know I’m a hard worker,” she said, eyes bright and alert. “I have experience as class president. I also have a lot of ideas of making this a great school year.” “Experience is truly important,” commented her sister. “Dad once told me he would vote for someone who had proven to be the kind of leader he was looking for in his company.”
An enormous grin spread across Olivia’s face. “What about Olivia for President—All Original, All Experience,” suggested her sister. “Oh, or Olivia for President, Opportunity for All ” “I like both of those,” exclaimed Olivia. “The first one reminds the voters of my experience. The second one lets them know I will listen to their ideas and work for and with them.” Her words fell as she took out a fat red marker and began the first poster.

I take a deep breath to calm myself and tell myself that I cannot be the one to ruin our pyramid and that I cannot let my team down.
“Focus. Balance,” My mother whispers to me. I try to place my feet into her belt very carefully and climb onto her shoulders. With concentration and trust, I slowly straighten my knees and wave my hand to the judges. Far below, I can hear the crowd cheering louder and louder. With faith in each other and with focus on the task, our team has built our pyramid and I have become a real pyramid builder today!

After loading their belongings into the car, they began to drive along to the next place for a living. Bruce looked out of the window with tears running down his cheeks, watching the people coming and going. Their careers were taking off, but they were leaving again. Actually, life kept them on the move. Their parents felt very guilty for not giving their children a stable home.
They eventually settled in Texas, and Bruce and Alice continued their academic efforts. With the encouragement of their mother, they remained dedicated to their wise pursuits and treasured opportunities to satisfy their thirst for knowledge. Finally, their cause was a success. When Bruce faced some dark chocolate close at hand, his mind kept turning in an endless loop. He said to Alice, “Tough circumstances have allowed us to have more life and learning experiences and made us who we are. Success, like candy, could be the sweetest treat of all.” Alice nodded, and she also felt it the greatest joy to help any poor kid with a sweet tooth to gain their favourite candy.
