“I love small-town life,” says Jenny Doan from Hamilton, Missouri. “Sometimes I feel as if I were in a Norman Rockwell’s painting.” One hour northeast of Kansas City, this town has about 1,700 people. Though it may be small and unusual, thanks to Jenny, it’s no longer sleepy.
In November 2008, Jenny and her family started the Missouri Star Quilt (被子) Company on a small budget. Now up to 8,000 visitors go to Hamilton each month to shop at one of the company’s 13 stores, take a quilting class and communicate with other quilt lovers. “I try to go out to the shops every day to talk with our customers,” Jenny says.
Each shop has its own focus. There is one for girls, one for kids, and the popular Man’s Land, a comfortable hangout where anyone can relax on the sofa, watch TV or play ball games. Several homey restaurants, including a breakfast place, serve hungry shoppers.
Jenny, who became famous because of her weekly quilting YouTube videos, is still amazed to see lots of quilt lovers coming downtown. She says, “It feels like a little miracle (奇迹). When we moved here in 1995, everything was underdeveloped. If we hadn’t been led to do something, the town would be gone. Quilt-crazy visitors will want to stop by the Missouri Quilt Museum, in the town’ s historic high school building. It exhibits (展出) hundreds of quilts from local and international designers; it’s also home to the world’s largest toy sewing machine collection on public display. A partnership with the National Quilt Museum ensures there’s an exhibition of the country’s most famous quilts. “The new programming - we’ve had a show about quilts related to the singer Prince - takes people by surprise,” says co-founder Dakota Redford.

Benjamin Franklin clearly knew how to get things done. After scanning the long list of Benjamin Franklin’s achievements, one can only come to one conclusion that the American man probably never had a wasted day in his life. When he was 84 years old, he became a successful author, printer, politician, postmaster, inventor, musician, and diplomat.
There’s much we can learn from Benjamin Franklin’s work habits and opinions on life that can increase our own productivity. Here are some ways Franklin overcame lazy, wasted days.
Start a group and share knowledge. When Franklin was 21, he was a struggling printer in Philadelphia. To increase his connections and to learn more about his industry, he created a group. The group was in great need of books, but books were expensive. Franklin helped start a library where books were bought and lent to members. This sharing of knowledge, experience, and connections helped Franklin become a famous and respected printer in Philadelphia.
Attack opportunities. “To succeed,” Franklin wrote, “jump as quickly at opportunities as you can.” We can all agree, but when an opportunity comes we often look the other way. It’s because the opportunity isn’t dressed the way we expect. We often think that the opportunity was only in the form of a golden egg or a million-dollar lottery ticket or a new job offer. But more often than not, the opportunity comes in smaller, less beautiful packages.
Time is something in short supply. Franklin wrote “ Lost time is never found again”. This may sound like it came from the pen of a poet, but it’s really an inspirational call to action. Franklin worked, created, and lived knowing that time is scarce. He never put off his work.
While Franklin was an able inventor we can be sure that his notebook contained a few unsuccessful ideas. Franklin wrote, “ Do not fear mistakes. You will know failure. Continue to reach out.”
18. Benjamin Franklin succeeded in many ways mainly because ________.
A. he was very clever and popular.
B. he could make good use of his time
C. he often shared knowledge with others
D. he could do many things at the same time
19. The underlined word “industry” in Para.3 probably refers to “________”.
A. Writing B. invention C. Music D. printing
20. For many people who want to succeed, opportunities ________.
A. are easy to catch hold of
B. are difficult to see and catch
C. are often dressed the way we expect
D. always come in the form of a golden egg
21. From the last paragraph we can learn ________.
A. Franklin wrote a lot of famous poems
B. Franklin sometimes wasted time
C. Franklin never met with failures
D. Franklin learned from failures
【答案】18. B 19. D 20. B 21. D

Some exhibitions and new displays create lots of waste. So museums are increasingly aware of the role they have to play in dealing with that. At Manchester Museum, John Miller and Robert O’Conner have developed their own approach to creating a circle from the exhibition, to exhibition changeover, and back to the museum workshop, reusing materials in any way they can.
Holding different exhibitions and displays means that museums are often left with structures (结构体) that won’t be used again. At the end of an exhibition, John and Robert carefully take down and cut all materials into workable units, ready to be reused wherever needed. When Pinc College based at Manchester Museum needed new classrooms, the workshop team were able to use completely recycled materials to build them.
While it’s easy to think of new as being better, reusing materials doesn’t mean you can’t create beautiful displays. Last year, the museum placed Illuminating Nature, a surprising window display showing some objects under UV light. Almost every part of it was reused. The only thing that needed to be bought was the UV lights, proving you don’t need to spend much to create something impressive.
No matter how many materials you try to reuse there will always be something left over. Why not keep an eye out for charities or local groups who would welcome a donation As with many museums, paint is often bought for an exhibition. And there will be a few extra cans left over. Manchester Museum usually takes them to Betel UK, a charity that supports people losing their jobs. The paint is used by Betel UK in their workshops for people to learn special skills and then refresh furniture (家具) which is then sold in their shops.
The impressive efforts of John and Robert are a shining example of a museum team that is establishing best practices and proving its determination to build a greener world. Their work inspires other teams to move away from the growth-model thinking that’s been influential in museums for the past twenty years.
22. What are John and Robert trying to do
A. Put on exhibitions on waste problems.
B. Improve people’s interest in traditional art.
C. Turn exhibition waste into something useful.
D. Change people’s attitudes to museum exhibitions.
23. Why did the author mention Illuminating Nature in Paragraph 3
A. To advertise the beautiful exhibition.
B. To teach people to use UV lights properly.
C. To show a successful case of material reuse.
D. To encourage people to enjoy the beauty of nature.
24. How does Manchester Museum often deal with the leftover paint
A. By storing it away for future use.
B. By selling it to local people at a low price.
C. By using it to decorate the museum again.
D. By donating it to an organization in need of support.
25. What can we say about John and Robert’s practices

What started off as a family business has now grown to include an entire community.”
14. What’s the influence of the establishment of the Missouri Star Quilt Company
A. It offers local families a chance to receive free quilts.
B. It has improved Jenny’s relationship with her family.

A. They mainly serve local customers.
B. They are equipped with high-tech products.
C. They focus on teaching kids some life skills.

16. What can we infer from Jenny’s words in Paragraph 4
A. Her family business has brought Hamilton to life.
B. She is worried about the environment of Hamilton.
C. Her family business has a lot of ups and downs.
D. She is good at making interesting videos.
17. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about

A. Their effectiveness has been questioned by other museums.
B. They provide new ideas for the development of museums.
C. They inspire more artists to hold creative exhibitions.
D. Their limitations have been well removed.
