As the chief engineer of the high-speed railway, my father always pays attention to every detail. According to him, “ 41 you can’t get little things right, how can you do big things right ”
I feel that way about commas (逗号). Something can go 42 in a piece of writing when com-mas are used carelessly around the page. My writing students often put a comma wherever they feel one is needed.
Then again, another kind of poor writings is quite opposite: no commas can be 43 anywhere. 1 always feel a bit disappointed (失望的), 44 sad, when I see the lovely comma abused (滥用) in these ways, because such abuses mean that my students don’t know how to use this 45 . But com-mas are important. They separate ideas. They show relationships. In talk, comma s can mean life or death. “Kill ducks!” or “Kill, ducks!”
Then again. I also failed to learn the importance of the comma until I taught writing 46 first-year students. I remember the program head, a 47 , white-haired woman, saying, “You have no idea 48 the commas go or why.” I felt terrible. How could I have misunderstood something so basic
Well, the thing is, commas aren’t so basic, and learning to 49 them takes years. Oscar Wilde, one of the greatest writers and poets in Ireland (爱尔兰) once joked about what a hard day of writing was like: spending the whole morning 50 a comma, and in the afternoon, putting it back in. That sounds about right.

49. A. use B. choose C. write D. remember

Last year I had a trip with my friend, Nancy. The weather was cloudy except for one night. Nancy and I sat in the field and we felt relaxed. We talked about the fantastic trip, looking at the stars. “It’s a pity we don’t know which stars we’re looking at, Jenny,” said Nancy. “I know some of them.” I answered. Nancy felt surprised when I finally finished telling her all the names I knew.
My interest in stars began when I was eight. My aunt took me to a planetarium (天文馆). A guide showed us the groups of stars and told us stories about how they got their names. The stories were wonderful.
Everyone knows we can see the stars better when it’s not cloudy, but lots of people don’t realize that a bright moon also stops us seeing very much. I always look for the Plough (北斗星), because once I see that, I can find the North Star and other stars.
I wanted to learn more about the stars, so I took a course at the club. There are so many lights in the city that we have to go into the countryside to see any stars. I’m planning to make videos about stars in the countryside. I’ll post them online for everyone to watch. My greatest dream is to be an astronaut and I wish I could have space travel.
59. How did Nancy feel after Jenny told her the names of stars
A. Relaxed. B. Surprised. C. Angry. D. Nervous.
60. When can we see the stars better
A. When it’s cloudy. B. When there are many lights.
C. When it’s fine. D. When the moon is bright.
61. What is Jenny planning to do
A. Have space travel. B. Take courses online.
C. Make videos about stars. D. Give a talk about the names of stars.
62. Which of the following would Jenny probably agree with
A. Students should move to the countryside.
B. Children’s favorite hobby is to write stories.
C. The best place to watch stars is the city center.
D. A bright moon may stop people seeing the stars very much.

If you love reading books, you must know about the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The book is quite interesting and popular among kids. Even if I am an adult now, the book is still one of my favorites. After reading the book again recently, I have learned an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.
In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring tasks. What’s in your mind when your mother asks you to do some chores Have you ever wanted to complain I think most people have.
Tom Sawyer, however, had a different thought when he was given a boring task. One day, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence (篱笆). Tom was doing his job, when his friend Ben Rogers happened to pass by. Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt “excited” about the task. “Only one in a thousand--maybe even two thousand--boys can do this!” Tom said.
Tom’s words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence. If Tom had thought about nothing but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don’t complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come and do the work for you. So, don’t complain, and you’ll feel better and per-haps even do a better job!
63. Which word do you think best describes Tom
A. Clever. B. Hard-working. C. Lucky. D. Kind-hearted.
64. What’s the correct order according to paragraphs3-4
①Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence. ②Ben Rogers passed by.
③Ben gave Tom his apple. ④Tom began to work.
A.①②③④ B.①③②④ C.②①④③ D.①④②③
65. What does the writer want to tell us
A. It’s important to learn how to paint the fence.
B. We should read the story of Tom and his aunt.
C. We should be interested in doing tasks.
D. It’s useless to complain.

People invented planes by looking at the shape of birds. Can you think of other amazing ideas we have got from nature What materials did scientists develop by looking at animals and plants
Have you ever seen geckos (壁虎) running up walls Do you know how they do it Well, their feet have millions of tiny hairs, which means that they can walk on or stick to almost anything. Scientists have used this idea to develop super-strong and super-sticky glues. We use them to repair planes, and at home they can even stick your TV to the wall!
Lotus (莲属植物) leaves look beautiful when they are on the water. But have you ever noticed how the water just falls off the leaves Scientists have found that they have a very smooth surface. Water doesn’t stick to this surface, and what’s more amazing, the water cleans the leaf as it moves on the surface. Scientists have now developed materials which can do the same thing. We use them on roofs (屋顶) and snowboards. You can even get paint for the outside of houses which doesn’t get dirty!
Sharks can move very fast in the water because they have special skin. There are hundreds of little “teeth” on the skin. These little “teeth” have lines on them which help the water to flow over the sharks’ bodies more quickly so they move very smoothly and fast. Scientists have used the information they learned from sharkskin to develop the material for swimsuits and the bottom of boats.
66. Which words can describe the material developed by looking at geckos
A. Super-strong and super-sticky. B. Super-strong and super-fast.
C. Super-sticky and super-fast. D. Super-sticky and super-clean.
67. Which part of the sharks helped scientists develop the material
A. Their hairs. B. Their skin. C. Their tail. D. Their teeth.
68. What’s the best title for the passage
A. The Importance of Nature. B. Research on New Materials.
C. Examples of the Best Inventions. D. Ideas from Nature.

Have you always thought that kids are smarter than adults You’d be right —at least when it comes to learning new things.
New research shows that kids do get new knowledge and learn new skills faster than grown-ups. It all comes down to something in the brain called GABA, which helps newly learned material stick in the brain. Researchers have found GABA levels increase rapidly in the brains of children of primary school age while they are learning new tasks or information. However, GABA levels in the brains of adults, aged 18 to 35, don’t change during or after lessons in new tasks and information.
“Our results show that children of primary school age can learn more within a given period of time than adults,”said Takeo Watanabe, a professor (教授) at Brown University in the US.
Dr Sebastian Frank, from the University of Regensburg in Germany, said their findings agreed with the common opinion that children outperformed adults in their learning abilities. “GABA plays a key role in making learning efficient (效率高的),” added Dr Frank.
The researchers suggested teachers and parents should give children as many chances as possible to develop new skills, from learning the times table to riding a bike. Professor Watanabe said the findings could also be used to help adults learn more efficiently. “For example, a new technology or therapy (疗法) could be developed to increase the level of GABA in the brains of adults.”
69. Which shows the changes of children’s and adults’ GABA levels when they learn new things
A. B.
C. D.
70. What does the underlined word “outperformed” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. were the same as B. did better than C. depended on D. looked up to
71. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Parents should do everything for their kids.
B. Children should learn to ride a bike as early as possible.
C. Adults can learn more rapidly because of their wide experience.
D. Children should be given more chances to learn new skills.
72. What’s the main idea of this text
A. New ways to increase GABA levels.
B. Different learning methods of kids and adults.
C. The reason why kids are better at learning than adults.
D. Some suggestions on how to improve our learning abilities.

Can you cook by yourself Do you like the homework of making a meal These days, primary and middle school students are required to take the Practical Activity Class (实践活动课) at least one class hour every week. The topic of cooking was discussed mostly by parents and students. Learning practical skills plays an important role in shaping a person’s character for sure.
Some schools and students have already practiced their practical activities. Gu Quan, 13 years old, from No.18 Middle School, used to be a lazy boy. In his own words, he hardly ever did any housework. But things have changed since No.18 Middle School made housework part of its students’ homework. Doing the dishes, cooking and making the bed... All of these tasks have become part of Gu Quan’s daily life.
At the beginning of each month, every student gets a list of housework to do every weekend. Their parents help them keep a record of their performance. The tasks are common and simple in daily life, such as sweeping the floor, washing cups and cooking food. On holidays like Mother’s Day, students should prepare presents for their mothers. Huang Yixi, 14, has learned several life kills, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire,” she said. But she managed to overcome (克服) her fear and complete her cooking tasks. At the same time, she also learned how tired her mother gets after doing housework every day.
