Brenda is a celebrity chef and my mom was delighted at the idea of meeting her in person. While most of us looked forward to her Saturday breakfast, I was quickly attracted by a holiday tradition that Brenda shared with us. It turns out that in addition to being a master in the kitchen, Brenda also enjoys crafting. She just happened to mention a fairly easy project that I now plan to use for my Thanksgiving table this year.Brenda told us how long ago she had made personalized “seating cards” out of tree branches or small trunks. “You cut them thick enough so that they sit up at the table.” she said. These personalized “cards” have become a beloved and time-honored part of her family. She shared that they still have the one saying “Big Daddy” in honor of her late husband.I got the help from my son and husband, who cut nice branches for me to use. I can’t wait to see the fun my children will have making them. And as an added bonus for the adults, the craft time might even provide a short window of quiet during our usually noisy holidays.Like Brenda, my family also has a special “Big Daddy”---that's what our children have always called my dad, continuing the tradition of what I called my dad’s dad. Even though Big Daddy always sits at the head of the table, it will be fun to have a special decoration this year to reserve his space...and everyone else’s too!24. What do we know about Brenda Gantt?A. She is a master of handwork.B. She is distinguished for her cooking.C. She enjoys making presents during holidays.D. She runs a restaurant in memory of her husband.25. How is Brenda’s family similar to the author’s?A. They take special trips during Thanksgiving.B. They have a seating card saying “Big Daddy”.C. Demanding. D. Cheerful.27. What is the text mainly about?A. Exchanging breakfast cooking skills.B. Decorating windows during Thanksgiving.C. Making tree-trunk-cards for the holiday table.D. Getting quiet time in the noisy holiday season.COne of the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry was Danish scientist Morten Meldal. When describing his career, Meldal said he started out as an engineer but changed to chemistry because he wanted to understand the world.Meldal’s experience may come as a surprise to students. They might believe they have to center their work and school lives in one field to be successful. But a study from professors at Michigan State University shows that is not always the case.Michele Root-Bernstein and Robert Root-Bernstein published their study in the Creativity Research Journal. They said that a large number of Nobel Prize winners can be described as “polymaths”, or “Renaissance”.The writers looked at past Nobel Prize winners and their students. They decided that when students of winners go on to win Nobel Prizes, some of what they learned from their teachers is how to live a life with many interests. They are, in a way, learning how to be creative.Having many interests, the Root-Bernsteins wrote, permits scientists to look for creative ways to solve problems. In fact, one important part of science is not discovering answers, but recognizing problems that need to be solved. The prize winners, the Root-Bernsteins said, transfer “skills, techniques and materials from one field to another.” They said Alexis Carrel won his Nobel Prize in medicine in 1912 by using techniques he learned from the clothing business. He realized that people who used thread to make and fix clothing had a skill that could be used in operations to put new organs into people’s bodies. The Michigan State professors study creativity. They found Nobel winners are nine times more likely to have experience in working with wood, metal or in the arts than most scientists. The Michigan State researchers say that unlike many people who spend long hours at work and give up some of their outside interests, Nobel winners believe their hobbies are important to creativity.28. What comes as a surprise to students according to the passage A. Meldal’s winning Nobel Prize.B. Meldal’s original working field.C. Meldal’s desire to understand the world.D. Meldal’s study with Michigan State University.29. What kind of people can be sorted as “polymaths” or “Renaissance” A. People who only concentrated on just one field.B. People who are committed lifelong to their career.C. People who are equipped with various interests.D. People who are admired for established achievements.30. What’s the author’s attitude towards the Root-Bernsteins’ discovery A. Tolerant. B. Cautious. C. Negative. D. Objective.31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text A. A Secret to Winning Top PrizeB. An Unbelievable DiscoveryC. A Born Nobel Prize WinnerD. An Amazing Rise to FameDMost people hate mosquitoes-but scientists are about to build a “mosquito factory” to release modified (改良的) mosquitoes. The modified mosquitoes carry a bacterium called Wolbachia pipientis, which can be naturally found in most insect species. However, it’s rarely discovered in mosquitoes. “We actually grow these mosquitoes that contain the bacterium.” Scott O’Neill, an Australian scientist involved in the project, told CBC News. When the modified mosquitoes are released, they slowly spread the bacterium to the population.Several studies have demonstrated the insects’ success. For example, a controlled experiment in Indonesia showed that the modified insect helped reduce the cases of the disease dengue (登革热) by 77 percent, according to a study paper published in 2021.The World Mosquito Program has announced that it will release modified mosquitoes in many of Brazil’s urban areas over the next 10 years. The aim is to protect up to 70 million people from diseases such as dengue, an infectious disease mainly spread by mosquitoes.Brazil has one of the highest rates of dengue infection in the world, according to the Nature website. “More than 1,000 people died of dengue in 2022 because of the spread of mosquitoes. It’s going everywhere.” Luciano Moreira, a scientist in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, told CBC News.Another way to prevent mosquitoes from spreading diseases is by producing genetically modified mosquitoes(GM). In 2022, the US Environmental Protection Agency cleared the release of 2.4 billion GM mosquitoes in California and Florida.According to the agency, GM mosquitoes carry two types of genes: a self-limiting gene that prevents female offspring (后代) from surviving to adulthood; and a marker gene that allows researchers to identify GM ones in the wild. After being released, GM mosquitoes lay eggs, so the genes are passed on to offspring. In this way, the number of female mosquitoes is reduced, therefore reducing the chance of spreading disease.32. What is the final purpose of building the “mosquito factory” A. To prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.B. To produce massive mosquitoes for scientific research.C. To study the behavior of mosquitoes in different environments.D. To replace the natural mosquito population with a modified one.33. What is the function of Paragraph 5 in the text A. It states challenges facing the program.B. It provides background information to the program.C. It shows the expected effect of the program.D. It indicates an opinion on the announcement.34. How does the self-limiting gene in genetically modified mosquitoes work A. By limiting their ability to lay eggs.B. By making them immune to disease.C. By reducing their offspring's lifespans.D. By allowing them to be easily identified.35. What can be the best title for the text A. Releasing GM Mosquitoes B. Reducing Dengue in BrazilC. Experimenting on Modified Insects D. But why do we need to blink There are two main reasons. First, blinking clears away dust from the eyes. 36 It might be under the eyelid or something that blew in.Second, blinking lubricates(润滑) the eye-balls. The eyes need a smooth surface for light to properly focus on, so vision becomes clear. Blinking releases a tear film which mostly consists of water, oil and mucus to keep the surface of the eyeball smooth. The tear film supplies oxygen to the eye. 37Blinking happens naturally. It takes the average person 400 milliseconds to blink. Most people blink somewhere between 10 and 20 times per minute, usually around 15 or 16 times. 38For example, you may blink more frequently if there’s something in your eye. Certain conditions can make it feel like there’s something in your eye, which makes you blink more. Some people have habitual involuntary movements that lead them to blink frequently. 39 If you have uncorrected vision problems, you may blink more often because your eyes are naturally trying to correct the unclear vision. If there is damage to the facial nerve, which is responsible for closing the eyelid, a person may blink more slowly or less often. Tiredness and some medications can cause a similar effect. 40 For example, when reading, people tend to blink at the end of a sentence rather than in the middle.A. It also prevents the eye from drying out.B. If there’s a foreign body, it helps get rid of it.C. And stress and anxiety can make you blink more, too.D. Blinking more often than needed can give brain extra stress.E. Pink eye and other types of infection can also cause damage on eyes.F. However, there are some circumstances that make people blink more or less often.G. Focusing on something like watching a movie, you may blink less to strengthen your focus. I was unemployed in 1994. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks. As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now ”And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now ”The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I’ll always be there for him.”注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Courageously, he went alone because he needed to know for himself:“Is my boy alive or is he dead ” _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________“I’m fine. In addition, given that the course is given twice a week, learning a foreign language intensively has been proved more effective by linguists. Last but not least, that the teaching language is Chinese only will force you to listen attentively and speak earnestly, ensuring a fast progress in language skills. To sum up, it is advisable that you choose the former. Hope the above might be of any help to you. Thank you for your time and wish you a great success in learning Chinese.Yours,Li Hua读后续写Courageously, he went alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead ” He dug for hours and hours. His hands were mushy and he could only see well in flashes. Right before he was about to pass out, he pulled back a large rounded rock and heard his son’s voice. He screamed his son’s name, “DANIEL!” A response came from below, “Dad It’s me, Dad!” This must be the most beautiful voice he’s ever heard in his whole life! “What’s going on in there How is it ” the father asked anxiously.“I’m fine. There are 13 other kids down here, Dad,” Daniel replied. “We’re scared, hungry, and thirsty. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle and saved us.” The father realized that this was a tricky situation. He couldn’t risk causing another collapse down there. Fortunately, the firefighters were just nearby. The father shouted to the fire chief and signalled to them to come over. Then, the father helped the firefighters cautiously remove the rocks and pulled out the kids one by one. When everyone was safe and sound, Daniel threw himself into his father’s arms: “You did it, Dad! No matter what, I know you’ll be there for me!”听力材料Text IW: Hello.
