教学实施过程：
1. Have students discuss Hemingway’s writing style by analysing some
sentences from the excerpt.
“Clear up, head,” he said in a voice he could hardly hear. “Clear up.”
Let’s omit the last “Clear up.” and read it again. How different is it
from the original sentence and why does the writer use repetition
By using repetition, the writer shows readers the old man’s strong
determination to be ready to overcome the hardship that he is faced with. The
old man repeats the words, which are mostly short and powerful, to encourage
himself and to strengthen his mind.
2. Have students answer the second question of part A on page 54.
Hemingway uses short, simple sentences and repetition, and focuses on the
man’s inner thoughts. For example, “You must keep your head clear. Keep your
head clear and know how to suffer like a man.” I think this style helps show
how mentally strong the old man is.
3. Have students answer the question of part B on page 54.
I think this sentence shows the power of strong will. Even if you lose a 批　注
physical battle, you can still win a mental battle. As long as you don’t give
in mentally (you are not “defeated”), you can still be proud of yourself,
even though your body is “destroyed”.
4. Have students answer the following questions.
(1) Do you remember the three qualities of literature What are they
Its description of truth and beauty, its appeal to readers’ feelings and
imagination, and its permanence including the universal interest and personal style.
(2) How are the three qualities of literature displayed in this excerpt
It contains a lot of truth about what the old man endures when he is at sea.
While reading this excerpt, we can imagine the terrible conditions and hardships
that the old man is faced with. The strong willpower of the old man appeals
to the readers very much. The writer uses a unique personal writing style (short,
simple sentences, repetition and focusing on the old man’s inner thoughts)
to depict an old man with great determination. The excerpt has universal
interest because it is like a lighthouse which guides readers never to give
up.
