Have students read the introduction before the excerpt on page 53 and answerthe following questions.(1) What is Hemingway well thought of for He is well thought of for his unique writing style.(2) What is Hemingway good at describing He is extremely good at describing the adventures of tough men.2. Have students read the excerpt and answer the following questions.(1) What does the excerpt describe It describes the struggle between the old man and the fish. The old manstruggled to conquer the fish while the fish struggled to escape.(2) Did the old man nearly catch the fish How do you know Yes, he did. In line 9 it says “For just a moment the fish turned a littleon his side.”and in line 25 it tells us “On the next turn, he nearly had him.”(3) When the old man saw the fish turned a little on his side (line 9), whatdid he say And in what emotion did he say that “I moved him,” the old man said. “I moved him then.” He was excited to 批 注see that he was able to pull the fish.3. Have students answer the following questions.(1) What do you find when you compare the old man’s feelings with his wordsor thoughts in the excerpt His physical condition was worse and worse while his willpower became strongerand stronger.(2) Would you give up or not if you were the old man Why or why not I wouldn’t give up because I firmly believe I could catch the fish if Ipersisted. Nothing can defeat me except myself.4. Have students answer the first question of part A on page 54.The old man is determined and positive. His long struggle with the fish showshis determination. His inner thoughts, like, “Yes you are, he told himself.You’re good for ever”, illustrate his positive attitude.5. Have students share with others their favourite parts of the excerpt andgive reasons.I like lines 12—15 best. In the excerpt the old man sailed on the vast seaby himself for such a long time, without anyone around to talk to or to helphim. When he fainted, he still held onto the great fish and encouraged his bodyto stay strong,“Pull, hands. Hold up, legs.” Such strong self-encouragementhelped him insist on completing the challenging task that almost diminishedhis hope and nearly defeated him.
