The world’s largest water diversion project (引水工程) transfers (转移) water from the Yangtze River in the south to dry areas in Northern China through eastern, middle and western routes (路线). The project was first suggested about 70 years ago. It started with the construction (建造) of the eastern route in 2002 and the middle route in 2003, while the western route is still in its pre-construction stage.
The middle route, which mainly brings water to Beijing, began supplying (供应) water in 2014. The eastern route, which feeds areas like Tianjin and Shandong Province, began supplying water in 2013. So far, these two routes have transferred nearly 30 billion cubic metres of water to over 40 cities and 260 counties in Northern China, including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Henan Province, according to Jiang Xuguang. This amount of water is enough to fill West Lake in Hangzhou about 2,140 times. “The water from the south has become a lifeline for these cities,” Jiang said. The middle route has provided over 73 percent of Beijing’s tap water supply. It has benefited (使受益) over 12 million people, more than half of the city’s total population.
Zhao Feiyan, a Beijing resident, said there were often thick mineral deposits (矿物沉淀) at the bottom of teapots before the new water came to Beijing. “Since then, the taste of tea has improved,” Zhao said.

Software (软件) developers (发明者) in the USA have created a game called Osmo Coding Jam. The game is designed to help children use the creative side of their minds when learning to code (代码). Children can play the game on iPads.
Tanya Dodge is the mother of two children who play the game. According to her, these activities give her children important skills for the future, “It’s an analytical (分析的) skill” said Dodge.
But the developers believe writing code is not just an analytical skill. “We want to explore (探究) the creative side of coding that I think is often not as explored,” said Felix Hu, an Osmo engineer.
