Children’s games in ancient China
During ancient times, children didn’t have smart phone, iPad or computer to entertain them. Instead, they came up with interesting games to play in their childhood. Let’s take a look.
Playing hide-and-seek Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children, popular around the nation. There are two ways to play: covering a child’s eyes while other kids run around to play a trick on him or, more commonly, others hide and one child must try to find them.
Flying kites Kites have quite a long history in China. The earliest kites weren’t made of paper. They were made of wood instead. Nowadays, the three most famous kites are the Beijing kite, Tianjin kite and Weifang kite. Each has its own style. For example, the bird-shaped kite with long wings is a special kind of the Beijing kite.
Watching shadow plays The most similar thing to watching a film during ancient times was going to see a shadow play. The artists controlled puppets (木偶) behind the screen to make the puppets move like people and tell stories. People liked listening to the music and enjoyed the beautiful puppets.
Kicking stone balls During the Qing Dynasty (1644—1911), kicking a stone ball around was a popular sport in the northern part of China, and it was often played in the winter to keep warm. Stones were carved into small balls and kicked along with feet.

Chopsticks are pairs of sticks with the same length that have been used as kitchenware in most of eastern Asian regions for over three thousand years. According to the relevant historical resources, the first chopsticks were thought to appear in China over 5,000 years ago. During the Spring and Autumn Period, chopsticks made of copper and iron developed gradually. Later the chopsticks with coating came in the Han Dynasty. Then gold and silver chopsticks followed.
Different materials have been used to make chopsticks until now, among which the most expensive ones are made of elephant tusks and the green stone. Those showed how wealthy the owners were.
It was said that silver chopsticks would turn black immediately if they touched poisoned food (but we know it was wrong today), so in history many kings and emperors used silver chopsticks to check whether the food was bad for them or not before eating. Chopsticks are also regarded as gifts to others. In China, chopsticks are traditionally given to a daughter when she marries to hope that they will have a child very soon, because the pronunciation of word “chopsticks” in Chinese is like “quick child”. Meanwhile, people often believe chopsticks have something to do with good luck. So many families will choose to put new chopsticks on the table at dinner on New Year’s Eve as a way of wishing for luck while dropping chopsticks is a sign of bad luck to come.
It’s believed that using chopsticks can increase fingers’ flexibility. That means if we use chopsticks frequently at dinner, it will make our fingers do everything freely. Some experts also prove that it can improve memory. Many westerners, businessmen and tourists put their knives and forks beside the bowls and plates but choose chopsticks in China.

71.(f)irst 72.(w)hether 73.(a)lways 74.(f)armers 75.(r)ich
根据“… was very happy.” feel + sth.
根据后文“The frog let her hold out her fishing net to the sunshine and he would sing a magic song.”
根据“The frog let her hold out her fishing net to the sunshine and he would sing a magic song. ”以及“The little girl followed…” 故填(i)nstructions。
根据“Do you know how rice first came to China”可知,这个故事是在讲水稻在中国的起源,故事的段首和短尾呼应,故横线处缺的汉意是第一次,其英文为first。故填(f)irst。
根据“…this story is true or not”可知,本句考查whether…or not“是否”,句子后边已经有“or not”,则横线处缺的单词是whether。故填(w)hether。
故填(a)lways。
根据“For centuries, much land has been devoted to rice-planting”可知,许多的土地用来种植水稻,根据首字母“f”提示可知,横线处缺的汉意是农民,其英文为farmer。

Food waste has become a big problem these days. It not only causes environmental pollution, but also destroys (毁掉) the fruit of farmers’ hard work. And there are still many people around the world who don’t have enough food to eat.
Knowing the importance of avoiding wasting food, I always try my best to do it. For example, I order just enough food when I’m eating at a restaurant and I often take the leftovers home if I can’t finish the dishes. I always clear my plate every time I eat at home and school as well.
By doing my part to save food, I get a sense of achievement and satisfaction. I also realize that we can all make a difference as long as we take action.
