2023-2024学年江苏省淮安市高三(上)期中英语试卷(难)Christian Liden decided that he would not pick out a ring from a jeweler's like most other people. He hatched an ambitious plan to create a personalized ring for his future wife,Desirae Clovis. Therefore,he made up his mind to go into the wild to find his own materials:the diamond, the gold and the accompanying jewels.
So,in May 2022,Liden told Clovis that he and Josh Tucker, his best friend, were heading out on a camp to Yellowstone.Instead,he and Tucker made for Crater of Diamonds State Park,Arkansas, which is set on a volcanic crater. The park is one of the few places in the world where the public is welcome to search for real diamonds and can keep them for free.Since its opening, only 1 in10,000 park visitors is lucky enough to find a diamond that weighs a carat or more.Still,he was up for the challenge.
On their way,Liden and Tucker stopped in Helena,Montana,to mine for accompanying jewels to add to the diamond they hoped to score. In Arkansas, the pair paid ﹩10 each to get into the park and spent almost three days searching through the volcanic dirt.
On the third morning,Liden suddenly spotted something reflecting light in the sands. "I was so excited that I started shaking." he said, "It was oily and shiny, and we both just knew it was a Diamond."
It was confirmed that Liden had found a 2.2-carat yellow diamond.Similarly-sized diamonds go for ﹩2,500 to ﹩20,000 per carat, depending on quality, color and cut.But the value wasn't what was important to Liden.

2023-2024学年江苏省南通市高三(上)开学英语试卷(难)Does your life ever feel as if you're pushing a heavy car—one on which you've spent much money and thathas now broken down? You've done everything right:you haven't invested heavily in a new business or quit your job to pursue your childhood dream of becoming a professional athlete. You have been a sensible adult living your sensible life.So why does it feel like such hard work?
This has been me for the past few months.Earlier this year,I took a long hard look at my sources of income and decided to focus on the ones that provided the most money.I'm lucky enough to have had a good financial year. But despite doing the right thing, it has used up my energy and I've worked out why.
Years ago,I realized that I disliked hard work.Don't get me wrong,I don't mind working hard.but hard work isn't for me.What's the difference? For a start, hard work feels as if it never really gets going. You canpush hard work and it might move a little but there's no celebratory moment when it gets done. Most importantly, hard work lacks joy.Working hard on a project you feel excited and moved by can be tiring and difficult, but it's ultimately joyful and that is what I've been missing
So I asked myself what would feel scary but joyful and this is the answer.I'm going to write a romance.Ofcourse, being a middle-aged journalist who suddenly decides to write a book is nothing novel. However, for me,it hits the sweet spot between being joyful enough to make me want to do it and scary enough to make me feel it's worthwhile.
As with all good middle-aged changes, this one hasn't really been thought through.I know little about writing fiction and even less about what makes a good book.I have the thinnest of ideas for a plot but,for the first time in a while,I'm excited,I will be another Jane Austen with my fantasies which give me life.Sonow,I have to go and sharpen my pencil.

2023-2024学年江苏省扬州市高邮市高三(上)开学英语试卷(难)Henrietta Swan Leavitt was born on July 4,1868,in Massachusetts.Little is known about her private life.As a college student, she studied a number of subjects and fell in love with astronomy(天文学).
Leavitt never married and was considered a serious woman with little time to waste on unimportant aspects of life. Her co-workers described her as pleasant and friendly, and much focused on the importance of the work she was doing. She began to lose her hearing as a young woman due to a condition that only worsened with time.
In 1893,she began working at Harvard College Observatory under the direction of astronomer E.C.Pickering.He directed a group of women, who were called "computers".These "computers" conducted important astronomy research by studying photographic plates(照相底片)of the sky and cataloging(编入目录) characteristics of stars. The women were not allowed to operate telescopes, which limited their ability to conduct their own research. They lived at a time when women's contributions were undervalued or ignored.
Henrietta Swan Leavitt continued her research until just before her death, always thinking of herself as an astronomer, despite her start as a nameless "computer" in Pickering's department. While Leavitt was not officially recognized during her life for her work,Harlow Shapley, the astronomer who was the Harvard College Observatory director, did recognize her worth and made her head of Stellar Photometry in 1921.
At that time Leavitt was suffering from cancer, and she died at the same year. This prevented her from being recognized as a Nobel Prize owner for her contributions. After her death, her name was placed on a lunar crater(月球陨石坑),and asteroid(小行星)5383 Leavitt carries her name.At least one book has been published about her and her name is usually mentioned as part of the history of astronomical contributions.

2023-2024学年江苏省淮安市高三(上)开学英语试卷(难)In 1999,John Smyth,a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire.Together with his wife Helen,he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned,John found he missed the classroom,so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students' Education (VISE),which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools.John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush,he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn't even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. "The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeterboard (跷跷板) act," he explains. "A big guy would jump on the other side,he would swing up in the air,do a couple of twirls (旋转) and land on his uncle's shoulders, and his uncle was standing on the boy's father's shoulders!"
The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs.John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer,Matt,gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.

Top figure skaters spin at such unbelievably fast speeds—as many as six revolutions per second—that it can make even audiences feel a little dizzy.Although they occasionally fall down upon landing, figure skaters mostly spin through the air without losing their balance. That's because they have conditioned their bodies and brains to stop that dizzying feeling.
Kathleen Cullen,a professor at Johns Hopkins University, studies the vestibular (前庭的) system, which is responsible for our sense of balance and motion, and says spinning without falling from dizziness is an art perfected over time.At the start of their careers, skaters and other athletes feel dizzy when they spin around. But ultimately, they train their brains to better interpret that feeling.
"Something really fundamental happens in the brain of people like dancers or skaters over lots of practice. And that's basically a change in the way the brain is processing information," Cullen says. "When you spin around, you're activating the semicircular canals (半规管).They're filled with liquid and they're sensing your circular movement. But when you stop, the liquid has inertia and it tends to continue to move. They get a false sensation of movement.Over years of training, figure skaters' brains have adapted and learned to ignore this error."
Athletes also learn ways to reduce their dizziness. For example, focusing on a fixed reference or motionless object minimizes dizziness and loss of balance. "Ballet dancers often move their heads around during each turn to fixate on a visual reference.Similarly,at the end of the spin, athletes will focus on a specific spot on the wall to provide a fixed reference," Cullen says.
"The brain and the inner ear are in constant communication with the body and one another to achieve balance," says Brigid Dwyer,an assistant professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine. "For most people, however, dizziness is only a potential issue during faster and more forceful activities," Dwyer says. "Amazingly, when needed, our brains can be well adapted to the dizzying tasks we encounter."
17.Why do figure skaters hardly feel dizzy after spinning in the air? ______
A. They can maintain the balance well.
B. They are in good physical condition.
C. They have trained long periods for that.
D. They are gifted at controlling their brain.
18.What does the underlined word "inertia" in Paragraph 3 probably mean? ______
A. The force to make an object move faster.
B. The force to get an object to start moving.
C. The nature to change an object's original state.
D. The nature to remain an object's original state.
19.What does Paragraph 3 focus on? ______
A. Scientific analyses. B. Helpful perception.
C. Practical examples. D. Amazing outcome.
20.What does Brigid Dwyer seem to tell us in the last paragraph? ______
A. Dizziness exists in many dynamic activities.
B. The brain can communicate with inner ears.
C. Communication is vital to keeping balance.
D. The brain can be used to dizziness over time.

2023-2024学年江苏省徐州市部分学校高三(上)开学英语试卷(难)"Going wireless is the future for just about everything!" That is a quote from scientist Sreekanth Chalasani, and we can't help but agree.Realizing this,a team of scientists has made a breakthrough toward wirelessly controlling human cells using sound,in a technique called "sonogenetics (声遗传学)." This concept may seem strange but let us explain.
Basically, the term "sonogenetics" means using ultrasound (超声波) to change the behavior of cells in a non-invasive manner. "We already know that ultrasound is safe, and that it can go through bone, muscle and other tissues, making it the ultimate tool for controlling cells deep in the body," says Chalasani.
Low-frequency ultrasound waves can target a particular protein that is sensitive to the signal. This research, published in Nature Communications, focused on TRPA1.When this protein is stimulated through the ultrasound waves,it also stimulates the cells which carry it.What type of cell is being stimulated depends on the outcome. For example,a muscle cell may contract with stimulation,or a neuron (神经元) in the brain will fire.In this experiment, scientists genetically marked cells with an increased concentration of TRPA1,making them the key targets of the ultrasound waves.
Currently, treating conditions like Parkinson's disease requires scientists to implant electrodes (电极) in the brain which stimulate certain disordered cells.Researchers hope that sonogenetics can one day replace these invasive treatments.
In the future, the team wants to adjust the placement and amount of TRPAI around the body using the gene treatment.Gene delivery techniques have already been shown to be successful in humans, such as in treating blindness. Therefore,it's just a case of adjusting this theory to a different sound-based setting.
"Gene delivery techniques already exist for getting a new gene—such as TRPA1—into the human heart," Chalasani says. "If we can then use an external ultrasound device to activate those cells, that could really change pacemakers." There is still a while to go before this treatment can become a reality. The future for sonogenetics, though, looks bright.

When the people first came round, they were all sitting around drinking tea nervously and occasionally glancing at the cupboards.I didn't like the atmosphere.I was beginning to wonder why I had asked these people round to go through my stuff and take what they wanted. This is what happens when you open your home to your family and friends, telling them they can help themselves to everything within it.
Last month,I moved abroad to study for two years, taking just a single suitcase with me.I couldn't afford to keep my flat,so when it came to my possessions,I decided to offer them up for a long-term loan. It's not recycling,or even freecycling:I'm calling it"share cycling".It was my beloved tent that formed the premise(前提) of it.I made the decision as I thought about the pointlessness of putting stuff into storage for two years.Instead,I imagined someone I loved putting my tent onto their back and setting off into the countryside in the summer sunshine.I was moving to the other side of the world, but this made it feel as though I would still be with my friends. To get rid of it all,I had an open house, inviting everyone I knew to take my belongings.

When colds and flu hit、many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms.Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used,it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free.A study estimated that every year,26,735 people went to the emergency room for adverse (不利的) events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together、their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects.Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions,so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use,
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses(剂量重复).Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients.A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women - may be at greater risk.
Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-1 o-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4.Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.
29.What does the author advise patients to do in paragraph 2? ______
A. Buy medicines from hospitals.
B. Take drugs as early as possible.
C. Ask for suggestions from doctors.
D. Read the package ingredients of drugs.

A. To provide a medical choice for people who catch a cold.
B. To show cold medicines are more likely to cause bad effects.
C. To explain OTC medicines often have more than one ingredient.
D. To stress the importance of learning about medicines' ingredients.
31.What do we infer about older people in paragraph 5? ______
A. They cannot cope with aging positively.
B. They are more easily affected by diseases.
C. Their body cannot handle medicines easily.
D. Their desire for health makes them unwise.

Every November,as Thanksgiving Day approaches, one memory comes to my mind.At my big Turkish family's get-togethers,baklava (果仁蜜饼) is the norm at the dessert table. There's rolled baklava,nut-filled baklava and chocolate-dipped baklava.
One year, though, back when I was in high school,my cousin Johnny decided to change things up a bit.He showed up at my parents' house for Thanksgiving with two items that had never been served before--apple pie and a can of cream.
Those two items caused one of the biggest arguments.I distinctly remember my mom and aunts whispering in the kitchen.
"Apple pie?" one of my aunts said. "What to do with this?"
I can still recall my mom's puzzled expression at it all.If there's one thing in this world my mom distrusts,it's fruit-filled desserts,a no-no in our cuisine culture. "Why would you bake fruits into a dessert when you can eat them fresh?" she often says.
The cream only made things worse. My mom didn't want to hurt Johnny's feelings. In a true act of love, she put the pie out on the dining room table, accompanied by the cream. It went mostly untouched.
Nowadays, things are different. We actually have pie at Thanksgiving--my mom regularly makes pie (the fear of fruit-filled sweets continues, but desserts topped with fruits or nuts have been given the okay). We still laugh about the drama caused by Johnny's apple pie.I'll never forget it.It wasn't just about the pie for me.Growing up,I sometimes felt like an outsider because of my culture. That Thanksgiving, though, was one of the first times I realized that my family's oddness was actually a good thing. It's what made us.
What about you?Which Thanksgiving sticks out as your most memorable one?

People often recommend planting trees to make cities greener, cleaner and healthier. But during heat waves, city trees can actually increase air pollution.Indeed,a new study has found,up to 60 percent of the smoggy ozone in a city's air on hot days may trace to chemicals emitted by trees.Galina Churkina, who works at Humboldt University of Berlin, and her team have confirmed it.
The findings might seem the opposite of what you would expect, notes Robert Young,an expert in city planting at the University of Texas at Austin.Indeed,he says, "Everything has multiple effects." The new findings do not mean cities should discourage tree planting.Instead, cities may need stricter controls on other sources of pollution, such as tail pipe emissions from cars and trucks.
City trees soak up carbon dioxide, and at the same time they release oxygen into the air.But oxygen is far from the only gas that trees and certain other green plants release into the air.One of these chemicals is a hydrocarbon known as isoprene(异戊二烯).It can react with combustion(燃烧)pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides(氮氧化物)emitted by cars and trucks in cities. The result is the formation of ozone,a component of smog, which can irritate the lungs and cause airway diseases.
Churkina says her team is not surprised to see the seemingly contrary relationship between plants and pollution. She adds that its importance is quite amazing. "The results," Churkina says, "suggest that city tree planting programs should not ignore the role this greenery may play in aggravating summer air pollution." "Adding more trees will improve quality of life only if those cities also undertake plans to sharply cut vehicle pollution in summer and to increase their reliance on clean energy sources for electric power," she says.
41.What does the new study find about city trees on hot days? ______
A. City trees can reduce the smoggy ozone.
B. City trees may easily absorb heat waves.
C. City trees may cause more air pollution.
D. More city trees can make a city far better.
42.What is the third paragraph mainly about? ______
A. The harm ozone does to people in cities.
B. The way trees help the formation of ozone.
C. The chemicals green plants release into the air.
D. The benefits trees bring to the city environment.
43.What does the underlined word "aggravating" mean in the last paragraph? ______
A. Worsening. B. Decreasing. C. Improving. D. Releasing.
44.Which of the following is suggested by Churkina? ______
A. Planting more trees in cities.
B. Advocating using clean energy.
C. Improving people's quality of life.
D. Banning vehicle pollution in summer.

Technology is starting to give us superpowers once reserved only for comic book heroes like Spider-Man and Superman. We now live in an age of human enhancement and related technology has captured the attention of the media and investors.
Some of these new technologies achieve their effects by means of electronic devices that connect our brains to external sources of knowledge, sensory data or physical power. We may not get chips implanted in our brains any time soon, but think about Google Glass—who needs an inserted chip when you can wear a computer on your head?
Wearable technology doesn't only come in the form of a pair of glasses.A Japanese laboratory is working on a more practical prototype (雏形) of a muscle suit than Iron Man's shiny armor (盔甲).The muscle suit, called an exoskeleton, enables the sick and elderly to move around more easily,New Scientist magazine reported.Coveting (觊觎) the powers of Spider-Man,the US military is working on a "Spider-Man suit" that not only lets wearers climb vertical walls, but also allows them to sense approaching objects without looking at or hearing them, according to an American military technology website.
But perhaps you favor more subtle powers like mind control or mind reading. This may one day come true as well. The most amazing human enhancement technologies that have come into reality are devices that interact directly with the human brain.
Q Sensor, created by scientists at MIT,is a wireless sensor that measures electricity conducted through the skin.It can detect whether people are bored, stressed or excited, and therefore has wide applications in research and therapy, the BBC reported.
Scientists envision neural implants that could allow humans to manipulate real-world objects with their mind—a power not unlike mind control.Slate magazine reported this might already be happening.
45.What can be learned from the first two paragraphs? ______
A. New technologies have brought us into a new era.
B. Superpowers of comic book heroes have been widely applied nowadays.
C. Human enhancement refers to the superpowers of the comic book heroes.
D. Spider-Man and Superman have captured the attention of the media and investors.
46.What can we know about Google Glass? ______
A. It is implanted in our brains.
B. It is technology with inserted chips.

41~44.【答案】C、B、A、B
People often recommend planting trees to make cities greener, cleaner and healthier. But during heat waves, city trees can actually increase air pollution.Indeed,a new study has found,up to 60 percent of the smoggy ozone in a city's air on hot days may trace to chemicals emitted by trees.Galina Churkina, who works at Humboldt University of Berlin, and her team have confirmed it.(人们经常建议植树使城市更绿、更清洁、更健康。
The result is the formation of ozone,a component of smog, which can irritate the lungs and cause airway diseases.(城市树木吸收二氧化碳,同时向空气中释放氧气。 B.The way trees help the formation of ozone.(树木有助于臭氧的形成)是第三段的段落大意。
But during heat waves, city trees can actually increase air pollution.Indeed,a new study has found,up to 60 percent of the smoggy ozone in a city's air on hot days may trace to chemicals emitted by trees.Galina Churkina, who works at Humboldt University of Berlin, and her team have confirmed it.(但在热浪期间,城市树木实际上会增加空气污染。 故选A。
Adding more trees will improve quality of life only if those cities also undertake plans to sharply cut vehicle pollution in summer and to increase their reliance on clean energy sources for electric power," she says.(她说:"只有当这些城市同时实施计划,大幅减少夏季车辆污染,并增加对清洁能源的依赖,增加更多的树木才能改善生活质量。")
45~48.【答案】A、D、C、A
Technology is starting to give us superpowers once reserved only for comic book heroes like Spider-Man and Superman. We now live in an age of human enhancement and related technology has captured the attention of the media and investors.(科技开始赋予我们曾经只有蜘蛛侠和超人等漫画英雄才能拥有的超能力。 故选A。
Technology is starting to give us superpowers once reserved only for comic book heroes like Spider-Man and Superman.(科技开始赋予我们曾经只有蜘蛛侠和超人等漫画英雄才能拥有的超能力。) Some of these new technologies achieve their effects by means of electronic devices that connect our brains to external sources of knowledge, sensory data or physical power. We may not get chips implanted in our brains any time soon, but think about Google Glass---who needs an inserted chip when you can wear a computer on your head?(其中一些新技术是通过电子设备实现的,这些电子设备将我们的大脑与外部知识来源、感官数据或物理力量连接起来。
