Lesson-1 Underdog
The context：humans & society-sports and fitness
The analysis of passage
The lesson is the reading comprehension lesson talking about a story of a student called Paul who is in school basketball team. It tells us the rule that you maybe fail in the beginning but that does not mean you will never succeed. Only if you do your best,you are finally successful.
The teaching aims and key competences
Language Ability Aim
Students can use some key words to find the main sentences of each paragraph based on the main idea of passage and solve the pre-reading questions.
Using some vocabularies to review the passage.

To know how to talk about the topic related to sports in English.
To know about the popular sports in western countries and try to tell the difference & similarity between the western country and China.

Teaching Processes
Teaching Steps Activities Design Intention Time
Step-1 Warming Up Teachers will give some cues on the screen and let students talk about sports and fitness with the given cues. Mission：Using some the related to some sports to arouse the interest of the sports. 5’
Step-2 Lead-in This step is to lead the students to the topic--Sports and Fitness. Use the sentence builder to write 3-5 sentences about what you should do to keep fit and then read about to your partner. Use the language you learnt to introduce a sport. To encourage students to voice their own opinions about the topic,and to know about the rules of some sports . 5’
Step-3 Pre-reading Do some brainstorm exercise and make a guess about the passage that will be learnt. What is an underdog a dog that is defeated by other dogs an athlete who seems to have little chance to win a company that has little chance to win the competition with others To guess the meaning of the title try to predict the main idea of passage. 5’
Step-4 Fast-reading This is a story about an underdog, Paul, written by Eric. Read the Part 1 of the passage quickly and answer the following questions. Who was his favourite player How tall was he And how tall was his favourite player What team was he on How was he treated by the coach What kind of player was he on the team Can know about the main你idea of part 1 through Fast-reading to develop the good reading habit and improve the reading skills. So the answer to the question is easy to find. 10’
Step-5 Careful-reading Activity 1: Work in groups. What were Paul’s advantages and disadvantages as a basketball player Discuss with your group members and then choose one student to give us the idea of your groups. Predict what will happen next Activity 2: Read Part 2. Put the events in order in the column on Page.32 and note down the change of the Coach’s attitude with evidence on Page.31. Talk about what happened according to the information on Page.32. Read the full story. Why did the coach call Paul “big guy” at the end of the story What do you think of the coach might have learnt from his experience with Paul. Activity 1：To finish the task in the book to know about the passage. Activity 2：To improve the reading ability。 15’
Step-6 Post-reading and Homework What kind of player was Paul How do you know Complete the mind map on Page.32 Write a summary about Paul. Use the questions as cues on Page.32 To talk about the deep meaning of the sports. Homework：Write a short passage to describe your own favorite sports. To check whether students master the whole passage or not. And to get the real meaning of the sports. 5’
