Unit 6 The Admirable Lesson 1 A Medical Pioneer
Teaching Plan Presentation Draft
Good morning, dear judges and teachers, it’s my great honor to be here to show you my teaching plan. The lesson I’m going to teach is from Unit 6 Lesson 1——A Medical Pioneer. Next I’m going to analyze my teaching plan from six aspects——the Analysis of Teaching Material and Students, Teaching Aims, Key & Difficult points, Teaching Methods, and
most importantly, Teaching Procedure and Teaching Reflection.
Part One The Analysis of teaching materials and students
Let’s start with the analysis of teaching material and students. The text is a news article about an admirable Chinese which is easy to arouse students’ sense of pride. It is a medium-length text containing some difficult words about medicine. The Chinese version of the news has been seen or heard by many students before. It is also a theme which is worth deep thought and discussion. Now we’ll talk about the students. The students are eager to learn something they don’t know and willing to participate in the class activities. Also, they are generally interested in the stories of an admirable Chinese heroine. And most of them are not familiar with news written in English and its structure. Lastly, many students have trouble in or are not confident about expressing their
opinions.
Part Two Teaching Aims
Next we’ll see the teaching aims of this class. The teaching aims of the class consist of four parts----- Learning Ability Aims, Language Skills Aims, Thinking Quality Aims and Cultural Awareness Aims. First, let’s talk about the Language skills aims. After the class, the students will have a general idea of the structure of the English news. They will know the general idea of the text and some key details of the news. Also, they will learn to summarize Tu’s qualities in their own words. As for Cultural Awareness aim, I hope after the class, the students will understand the relationship between success and persistent devotion. The class will also help them develop their sense of responsibility of using science to improve the life of human beings. Then let’s look at the Thinking Quality aim. Through the class, the students will understand the process of the rough road to discovering Artemisinin. It will also help them learn to summarize Tu’s qualities with valid evidence and put what they have learned into their own lives through learning and discussing Tu’s great discovery. At last, I will show the Learning Ability aim of the class. Through the class, the students will practice task-based learning and group learning strategies. It will also help them improve their reading ability like scanning and skimming. Their ability of autonomous learning and
cooperative learning will also be practiced.
Part 3 Key & Difficult Points
Thirdly, let’s see the Key & Difficult points of the class. The key points are as follows. Firstly, the class is to ensure the students to understand the English news structure and find the key details about Tu’s discovery after reading. Then the class is to encourage the students to summarize Tu’s qualities and share their personal gains from these qualities. As for the difficult points of the class, I think there are mainly two points. The first is how to help students find the details about Tu’s road to discovery. Then it is how to help students
summarize Tu’s personal qualities with valid evidence.
Part 4 Teaching Methods
Next I’ll briefly introduce the teaching method of this class. I’ll use the usual P-W-P reading mode (Pre-While-Post Reading Mode)
and Task-Based Teaching Method in my class.
Part 5 Teaching Procedures
Now the most important part is here---- the teaching procedure. In the lead-in part, we’ll play a guessing game about a certain disease. I tell them the symptoms and they tell me what disease it is. And then show them a video about malaria. After that, raise a question: “Do you know who invented the cure for malaria ” Some students will give the answer “Tu You you” and then the teacher will
ask “What do you want to know about her and her discovery ”
Students will raise various questions. Then the teacher will say: let’s read a news article about Tu and her discovery and you will get the
answers.
In the pre-reading part, I will show the students the basic structure of a new article before reading the passage. The students will be shown four parts of a news article and the position and
function of each part.
Then we’ll get down to reading the text and finish the related tasks following them. Before doing the tasks, I’ll do some activity preparations. That is---divide the whole class into three groups. Every member of the group who gives the right answer or behaves well in the activities will get one point. The group with the highest points will be given a gift at the end of the class. Then the teacher writes “Group A Group B Group C” on the blackboard to record
their points.
In the fast reading part, the students are firstly asked to finish a match-making task after a brief scanning of the text. The intention of this design is to train students’ scanning ability---- the ability of getting the topic of each paragraph in a short time. Then the students are asked to read the first paragraph and try to do a blank-filling task. The purpose of this design is to train students’ ability of getting the
main information of a news article from the leading paragraph,
which is mentioned in pre-reading part.
When in the careful reading part, the students are also facing two tasks. The first task is a T-F exercise. They are required to read paragraph one to four to get it done. The other task is a multiple- choice task. They have10 minutes in total this in the careful reading part. The purpose of this design is to lead the students to use
skimming techniques to find the detailed information.
Then it comes to the post-reading part. I have designed two activities in post-reading part. The first one is to ask students to use some adjectives or phrases to summarize Tu Youyou’s valuable qualities and find evidence in the text to support their opinion. The intention of this design is to train students’ ability of summarization. The second activity is more open. I create an imaginary situation: our school has the honor to invite TuYouyou to give us a speech. After the speech, our school newspaper has organized an interview for TuYouyou. Every group has to choose a student to act as Tu Youyou, another one to act as the presenter and the rest of the group members act as reporters Just role-play the interview. The intention of this design is to see how the students will output what they have learned in the class in an imaginary situation. The
following video is a part of the role-play.
In the homework part, students are required to write a short news
report about Tu Youyou based on your interview. The intention of
this part is to help students make a brief review of the news article.
Part 6 Teaching Reflection
The last part of my teaching plan presentation is teaching reflection. From the positive side, students showed great enthusiasm and desire to get involved into the class activities. I can see that they are ready to learn and glad to share their feelings. Also, they are quick to finish the task. However, there are also some negative
feedbacks. Some students are so focused on the activities instead of
knowledge that they remembered little after class. Also, some students are shy or unconfident about expressing themselves. So it is necessary to encourage them to speak up no matter they are right or
wrong.
Ok, so much is my teaching presentation. Thank you for your
listening and time.
