1.Identify and summarise the forms and functions of -ed as an attributive adjective through observation and apply it correctly in the contexts and real-life situations;
2.Understand the main idea of listening materials and gather details to complete a form;
3.Use phrases from the listening materials to make a phone enquiry;
4.Use appropriate expressions to describe personal qualities.

Step Ⅰ Lead-in
Look at the sentences and answer the questions.

Suggested answers:
1.“The words” were spoken in sentence(a).“The well” was finished in sentence(b).
2.Because “the words” were “spoken” instead of “speaking”,and “the well” was “finished” instead of “finishing”.The words in bold show passive instead of active actions.
3.Sentences (a) and (b) contain -ed as attributive while sentences (c) and (d) contain attributive clauses.
4.The sentences using -ed as attributive are more concise and formal.
Step Ⅱ Analysis and identification
Activity 1 Read the discussion between two students about Ryan’s foundation.Rewrite the underlined sentences using the -ed form.
Ryan is a young man who is admired by a lot of people. The money which is raised by his foundation supports schools and communities in Africa.I think digging wells for drinking water is a good way to solve the problem of water shortage.
I absolutely agree with you.Digging wells is a good way,but not the only way to solve the problem of water shortage in Africa.As in the words which were spoken by Ryan,we need to not only donate money but also get new ideas.I think the support which is needed includes new technology for recycling water and education on how to use and save water.

Activity 2 Fill in the blanks.
过去分词作定语
过去分词作定语,性质上相当于形容词,其逻辑主语就是它所修饰的名词或代词。它所修饰的名词、代词与之构成被动关系。
1.过去分词作定语的位置
(1)单个的过去分词作定语时,常常置于所修饰的名词之前,叫作前置定语;而过去分词短语作定语时,常常置于所修饰的名词之后,叫作后置定语。
①Your      (speak) English is quite good.
②Taking exercise early in the morning has become a part of his      (retire) life.
③Would you like to explain in detail the problems      (mention) in this chapter
(2)过去分词修饰something/everything/anything/nothing/somebody/nobody等不定代词以及指示代词those时,要放在这些词的后面。
①He is one of those      (invite).
②Nothing      (report) in the newspaper interested him.
2.过去分词作定语的意义
(1)及物动词的过去分词作定语,可以表被动,也可以表被动+完成。
①She is a      (respect) teacher.
②The question      (discuss) yesterday remains up in the air.
③Did you accept the invitation      (give) by the tour guide
④We’ll go on with our experiment as soon as we get the      (add) fund.
(2)不及物动词的过去分词作定语时,一般是前置定语,不表示被动,强调动作完成。如:fallen,retired,risen,escaped,arrived,dated,faded等。
①We can see the      (fall) leaves everywhere on the ground.
②Can you tell me why the rising sun looks much bigger than the      (rise) sun
(3)有些动词的过去分词已经转化成形容词,多用来表示人物的心理特征或感情变化。常见的有:disappointed,surprised,puzzled,frightened,moved,shocked,confused,embarrassed,satisfied等。
①He threw me a quick and      (puzzle) glance.
②I know he didn’t pass the examination from his      (disappoint) look.
③The teacher is comforting the      (frighten) girl.
3.当过去分词或过去分词短语作定语时,往往可以用定语从句代替。
(1)All the      leaves have been cleared away.
=All the leaves that fell have been cleared away.
(2)Most of the guests      to the party were my classmates.
=Most of the guests who were invited to the party were my classmates.
(3)I am fond of the food      by my mother.
=I am fond of the food that/which is cooked by my mother.
(4)The government decided to rebuild the      bridge.
=The government decided to rebuild the bridge that/which has been damaged.
4.现在分词、过去分词和不定式作定语的区别

现在分词作定语 doing 表示主动意义 表示动作正在进行;表示经常性的动作或现在(当时)的状态

The United Nations Children’s Fund,also knowing/known as UNICEF,is a United Nations(UN) organisation basing/based in New York.It offers help needing/needed by children all over the world.
UNICEF was founded on 11 December 1946,to provide food and healthcare to children in countries damaging/damaged in World War Ⅱ.Since 1953,UNICEF has taken up an extended mission to help children in the developing/developed world,including those living/lived with diseases or disabilities,and those affecting/affected by rapid modernisation and environmental problems.Now,UNICEF has been working to improve the lives of children and their families across 190 countries and territories.
