When the Browns brought it to a scale (秤), they found it was 7.8 kilograms. That is about the same as a small dog. The Guinness (吉尼斯) record of the largest potato was set in 2011 in Britain by a vegetable grower, Peter Glazebrook. But this potato is 2.8 kilograms heavier than Peter’s potato. The New Zealand potato, now named Doug, could break the record. The Browns are now waiting to hear from Guinness.
The potato has become ▲ around their neighborhood, as Colin built a cart and carried it around and many people came to see it.
Colin says he does not know how Doug got in his garden. The Browns were growing cucumbers in that part of the garden so they were surprised to find a potato. It may have been growing for two years or more.
The potato is getting a little older now, two months after it was taken from the ground. It smells bad. Right now, it is in the fridge. But it might not stay that way forever. One of Colin’s hobbies is making food. He says Doug’s future may be as the main ingredient in wine.

Chen Manlin, a 15-year-old student from Hong Kong, got a letter of reply from Chen Dong, an astronaut abroad the Tiangong space station on July 19.
When she received her letter, she was over the moon, because the letter was from the Tiangong Space Station.
Back in June, Chen learned about the national letter-writing campaign to the astronauts on Tiangong, which was titled “Sending My Dream to Tiangong”. She wrote a letter at once and told the astronauts about her dream of being an astronaut and how she worked hard for her dream. Chen’s interest in space had begun in 2013, when as a 6-year-old, she watched astronaut Wang Ya-ping’s lecture with over 60,000,000 primary and middle school students.
The three-page reply from Shenzhou XIV astronaut Chen Dong, arrived about a month later. As one of the 30,000 students from all over the country to take part in the campaign, Chen was the only one in Hong Kong to receive a reply. In the reply, Chen Dong wrote, “Life is like the sky, and all its different kinds of weather. Not every day is sunny, there will also be rainy, snowy and stormy days, and the sky will continuously change color. Don’t worry about difficulty, or you will never become your best. The hard days help make you who you are. Please cherish (珍惜) those days, and you will be rewarded (奖励) with a great surprise.”

In the past few years, seasonal allergies (过敏) have been hitting people around the world. In 2021, as many as 81 million Americans experienced seasonal allergies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The cause (原因) for seasonal allergies is mostly the pollen (花粉), and researchers say climate (气候) change is behind it.
As Earth warms, scientists are seeing two big changes to allergy seasons. The allergy season is longer and there is more pollen in the air.
With warmer winters, a pollen season starts earlier in the spring and ends later in the fall. In the research done by William Anderegg from the University of Utah, US, he saw pollen seasons starting about 20 days earlier this year than they did in the 1990s.
Pollen levels (水平) are also higher in the US. Anderegg’s research found about a 21 percent rise of pollen in the air from 1990 to 2018.
This may be because of warmer temperatures and higher CO levels in the air, according to Anderegg. Burning fossil fuels (化石燃料), another cause of global warming, leads to more CO . As CO levels go up, plants and trees make more pollen, according to NBC.
There is more rain because of climate change. This may make allergies more serious too. “Changes in the weather break down pollen spores (孢子) into even smaller pieces. These pollen spores can then more easily get into the lungs (肺),” Brooke Lappe, a researcher at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, said to NBC.
42. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. Researchers are worrying about climate change.
B. Pollen is the main cause of climate change.
C. Climate change is making seasonal allergies more serious.
D. Climate change has nothing to do with spring allergies.
43. William Anderegg found that ________.
A. pollen seasons are longer than before B. spring starts earlier and fall ends later
C. pollen seasons were very long back in the1990s D. winter temperatures are going up year by year
44. What’s the relationship between pollen levels and CO levels
A. If CO levels go up, pollen levels go up.
B. If CO levels go up, pollen levels go down.
C. Pollen levels and CO2 levels aren’t clearly related (相关的).
D. CO levels and pollen levels are in balance (平衡).
45. Why are allergies more serious with more rain
A. Because the allergy season becomes longer. B. Because pollen spores stick together.
C. Because there is more pollen in the rain. D. Because people breathe in (吸入) pollen more easily.

The potato has become ▲ around their neighborhood, as Colin built a cart and carried it around and many people came to see it.
