What do you think of when you hear the word “drought”: Do you think of “dry” “hot” “dusty” “cracked(开裂的)earth” or even “no water” If so you’re on the right track!
When some places are in drought, they may be dry, hot and dusty. Cracks may appear in the soil, and rivers, lakes, streams and other sources of water may go dry. Other places in drought get some rain, but not as much as they usually receive during that season. Drought means that a place has less rain or snow than normal over a few months or even longer.
Drought has many causes. It can be caused by not receiving rain or snow over a period of time. We learned in the discussions above about the water cycle and weather. The changes in the wind patterns that move clouds and moisture through the atmosphere can cause a place not to receive its normal amount of rain or snow over a long period of time.
If you live in a place where most of the water you use comes from a river, a drought in your area can be caused by places upstream from you not receiving enough moisture. There would be less water in the river for you and other people who live along the river to use.
People can also play a big role in a drought. If we use too much water during times of normal rainfall, we might not have enough water when a drought happens.
24. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic. B. To analyse the problem.
C. To conclude the article. D. To put forward an argument.
25. What will happen if a place is in drought
A. The weather will be dry, hot and windy.
B. There won’t be any water left in rivers or lakes.
C. There will be less rain or snow for quite a long time.
D. The rainy season will be replaced by the snowy season.
26. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “moisture” in Paragraph 3
A. Dust in the wind. B. Rain in the soil.
C. Snow on the ground. D. Water in the air.
27. What topics are discussed before the passage
A. The definiton(定义)of drought. B. The water cycle and weather.
C. The causes of drought. D. The influence of drought.

In the shadow of Kenya’s Mount Kilimanjaro, nine Rothschild giraffes, the rarest giraffes on the planet, are free to wander at the English-style manor(庄园). Every day shortly before 9 a.m., they come up to the house and stick their heads through the windows and doors in search of morning treats. The manor’s owners, Tanya and Mikey Carr-Hartley, share their dining table with them. And now the couple are sharing the fantastic experience with the public by opening the manor gates to guests at the giraffe hotel, the only hotel of its kind in the world. Now, guests can feed the giraffes at breakfast but can also get up close to them from their second- floor bedrooms.
Mr and Mrs Carr-Hartley, both 38, spent their childhood living close to the house in Nairobi and have always been enthusiastic about the animals. Tanya said, “Mikey and I grew up near this manor house when we were children. We are both the third generation Kenyans and have always wanted to work in conservation. Mikey’s family have been related to the protection of animals for many generations, His grandfather helped the removal of giraffes as far back as the 1930s because the Rothschild giraffes lost much of their natural living space. When the house came up for sale, we jumped at the chance to buy it as we had always dreamed of owning it. Now, we were absolutely overjoyed to do something for the giraffe protection. Having the giraffes so close is very special and something which people can now experience by staying in one of the ten rooms at the hotel.”

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called, as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water...”Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really DID have something magic.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. No-body moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”
Paragraph 1: Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph2: At that moment, Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny’s speech first.
