Aron Ralston was a pretty normal guy, but he always had an extremely adventurous desire to travel and see the world. During his childhood, his family moved to Denver, Colorado, a place offering many opportunities to climb mountains, explore, and eventually become the adventurer he’d always wanted to be. Back in 2003, Ralston was climbing in the remote, mountainous area of Southwestern Utah, when the unthinkable happened: Aron got stuck in a crevice (裂缝) in the rocks and pinned by a big stone that weighed over 360 kilograms. The weight of the rock crushed his arm, and he was pinned by it. Aron took photos of his bad situation (which was going to get a lot worse), hoping rescue teams (救援队) would know where he was and came to remove the rock so that he could get out and home safe.
But rescuers never came. Aron waited for them for days till he lost his hope. He knew he had to do something. He was 18 meters above the floor of the valley where he was pinned in, and he had a pocketknife. He made what must have been one of the most difficult decisions of his life: to cut his own arm in order to survive. Aron cut the lower part of his arm off, having to wrench (扭动) his forearm against the big stone to break the bones, and then got himself down to the bottom of the valley, where he would begin to walk and search for help. Luckily, help arrived in the form of a helicopter (直升机) that spotted him, covered in blood. Aron had tied off the wound to keep himself from bleeding to death pretty successfully and would eventually make it out alive.
Ralston went on to become an inspiring speaker and continued to travel and climb mountains—he didn’t let an incident that forced him to cut his own arm off, stop him from doing what he really loved.
24.What can be inferred about Aron’s getting stuck
A.It was unavoidable. B.It resulted from his being lost.
C.It was unexpected. D.It was caused by a moving stone.
25.Why did Aron take photos of his bad situation
A.To send them to rescuers for help. B.To keep a record of his adventure.
C.To remind his friends of the danger. D.To tell the doctors about his wound.
26.What did he do to survive when no rescue was expected come
A.He waited for the rescue to come.
B.He cut the stone using his pocketknife.
C.He moved off the stone using all his might.
D.He cut his lower part of his arm and broke the bones.
27.What helped Aron Ralston survive
A.His cruelty and anger. B.His effort and bravery.
C.His talent and creativity. D.His calmness and determination.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.D 27.D
根据第一段“Back in 2003, Ralston was climbing in the remote, mountainous area of Southwestern Utah, when the unthinkable happened: Aron got stuck in a crevice in the rocks and pinned by a big stone that weighed over 360 kilograms. (早在2003年,拉尔斯顿在犹他州西南部偏远的山区攀岩时,不可思议的事情发生了:阿伦被卡在岩石的裂缝中,他被一块重达360公斤的大石头压住了)”可知,Aron Ralston在攀岩过程中遭遇岩石碎裂,并被岩石压住,这次事故属于意外发生。故选C项。
2. 细节理解题。根据第一段“Aron took photos of his bad situation (which was going to get a lot worse) , hoping rescue teams would know where he was and came to remove the rock so that he could get out and home safe. (阿伦拍下了他糟糕的情况(情况会变得更糟),他等待救援队来移走岩石,这样他就可以安全回家了)”可推知,阿伦拍下自己的情况,发给了救援队,有助于他们来营救。故选A项。
根据第二段“Aron cut the lower part of his arm off, having to wrench his forearm against the big stone to break the bones, and then got himself down to the bottom of the valley, where he would begin to walk and search for help. Luckily, help arrived in the form of a helicopter that spotted him, covered in blood. (阿伦切掉了他手臂的下半部分,他不得不用前臂抵住大石头来折断骨头,然后自己走到山谷的底部,在那里他开始走路并寻找帮助。幸运的是,一架直升机来了发现浑身是血的他)”可知,阿伦等不来救援,只有选择断臂求生。故选D项。
4. 推理判断题。根据第一段“Aron took photos of his bad situation (which was going to get a lot worse) as he waited for rescue teams to come to remove the rock so that he could get out and home safe. Scientists in Australia thought they had developed a new tracking device to help them monitor magpies (喜鹊), but these birds had other ideas.
Australian magpies are medium-sized black and white birds from the same bird“family“ as crows and bluejays. They are known to be quite clever. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in.
The purpose of the scientists’ experiment was to learn more about how far they travel each day and how their social behaviors are influenced by sex, age, and rank. Besides, the scientists were eager to test the newly developed tracking device.
Most trackers are too big to fit on small and medium sized birds, and small trackers tend to be limited when it comes to data storage, battery life, and reusability. The new tracker, weighing less than 1 gram, was designed to overcome these problems. Attached to a backpack-like harness (背带) which could not be removed easily, the device can re-charge wirelessly and transmit (传输) data wirelessly.
The scientists placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. Things started to fall apart almost immediately. Within 10 minutes of fitting the final tracker, an adult female without a tracker tried to remove the harness from a younger bird and eventually succeeded. This pattern was repeated in the following hours, and by the third day none of the birds had trackers anymore.
Scientists refer to this as “rescue behavior,” and it happens when a helper tries to free another individual in trouble and with no obvious direct benefit to the rescuing individual. They think this is the first time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies. However, they aren’t sure if the same individual removed all of the harnesses or if others offered help.
The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but their experiment still produced interesting results. That’s how science works sometimes. The scientists need to try, again to figure out a good way to track these clever birds.
28.What can we learn about Australian magpies from paragraph 2
A.They outsmart crows. B.They are social species.
C.They are rarely spotted. D.They learn from each other.
29.What is a big advantage of the new tracking device
A.It can work without wires. B.It can be applied to all birds.
C.It doesn’t come off the birds. D.It doesn’t need to be re-charged.
30.Which of the following best describes a person with “rescue behavior”
A.Polite. B.Brave. C.Honest. D.Selfless.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.New tracking devices disappoint scientists
B.Magpies prove to be cleverer than scientists
C.Magpies teach scientists an unexpected lesson
D.Science experiments don’t always go as planned
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.C
根据第二段中“They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in.(它们生活在多达12只鸟的群体中,共同保卫它们居住的地区)”可知,喜鹊是群居物种。故选B。
根据第四段中“Attached to a backpack-like harness (背带) which could not be removed easily, the device can re-charge wirelessly and transmit (传输) data wirelessly.(该设备连接在背包状的背带上,不易拆卸,可以无线充电,无线传输数据)”可知,新的追踪设备有点是可以无线工作,故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“Scientists refer to this as ‘rescue behavior,’ and it happens when a helper tries to free another individual in trouble and with no obvious direct benefit to the rescuing individual.(科学家把这种行为称为‘救援行为’,当一个帮助者试图解救另一个陷入困境者,而对救援者没有明显的直接好处时,就会发生这种行为)”可知,“救援行为”是一个帮助者试图解救另一个陷入困境者,而对救援者没有直接的好处,由此推知这种行为是无私的,故选D。
根据全文内容,结合倒数第二段中“They think this is the first time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies.(他们认为这是第一次报道澳大利亚喜鹊的救援行为)”和最后一段中“The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but their experiment still produced interesting results.(研究小组没有得到他们想要的数据,但他们的实验仍然产生了有趣的结果)”可知,本文主要说明了澳大利亚科学家原本利用追踪器了解喜鹊的运动习性,但是却无意中发现了喜鹊的“合作救援”行为。
D
While doing homework, Seoyoung Jun closed one eye and successfully picked up her pencil holder. She realized that directing herself in a 3D space didn’t require both eyes. This surprised her so much that she did some research. And she learned the brain can process 3D information with poor vision (视力) or even without any vision. Then the idea for Mind Beacon was born.
It uses a thin line of light to gather 3D information about the placement of walls, furniture and other things. Then the light sends that information back to Mind Beacon, which then raises little pins (大头针) to show where those obstacles (障碍物) are. Then blind people can “read” the position of those pins to understand the positions of structures and objects ahead and walk around them.
When the invention worked for the first time, Seoyoung didn’t believe it. She’d been up all night working on it. To be sure there wasn’t a mistake, she shut it off and started it up. It had been seven long months of research and testing. Now this tool can help disabled people create a mental image of their surroundings.
The heart of Mind Beacon is a 3D depth sensor that’s connected to a computer. That computer can control motors that are lined up in three rows of three. Each motor controls a pin that can move up and down. When the sensor finds an obstacle, the pin rises. It can rise to three different heights. Each height roughly represents the height of the obstacle. Someone who runs their hand over the nine pins can tell where the obstacle is and its general height.
Mind Beacon won Seoyoung a place at the world’s high school research competition, Right now, she wants to ameliorate it. She imagines in the future it can be connected to a smartphone, with more little pins to show the exact height of the obstacle. It would feel like a little map showing the location and size of the obstacle ahead.
32.What inspired Seoyoung to invent Mind Beacon
A.The desire to win a competition. B.The blind’s good sense of touch.
C.Her wish to bring convenience to the disabled. D.Her ability to locate an object without full vision.
33.How does Mind Beacon help the blind
A.By informing them of the obstacles in advance.
B.By teaching them to describe dangerous objects.
C.By making them have easy access to the Internet.
D.By training them to remember maps of their living areas.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The limitations of Mind Beacon pins. B.The working process of Mind Beacon.
C.The role of computers in Mind Beacon. D.The effect of Mind Beacon on the blind.
35.What does the underlined word “ameliorate” probably mean
A.Keep. B.Spread C.Improve. D.Control.
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.B 35.C
根据第一段“While doing homework, Seoyoung Jun closed one eye and successfully picked up her pencil holder. She realized that directing herself in a 3D space didn’t require both eyes. This surprised her so much that she did some research. And she learned the brain can process 3D information with poor vision (视力) or even without any vision. Then the idea for Mind Beacon was born.(在做作业时,徐英全闭上一只眼睛,成功地拿起了铅笔架。她意识到在3D空间中指导自己并不需要两只眼睛。这让她非常惊讶,于是她做了一些研究。她还了解到,即使视力不好,甚至没有视力,大脑也能处理3D信息。于是,Mind Beacon的想法诞生了)”可知,Seoyoung仅用一只眼睛就能成功地拿起笔筒,这启发她发明出了Mind Beacon。故选D项。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段“It uses a thin line of light to gather 3D in- formation about the placement of walls, furniture and other things. Then the light sends that information back to Mind Beacon, which then raises little pins (大头针) to show where those obstacles (障碍物) are. Then blind people can “read” the position of those pins to understand the positions of structures and objects ahead and walk around them.(它使用一条细细的光线来收集关于墙壁、家具和其他东西的位置的3D信息。然后,光将这些信息传回Mind Beacon,然后Mind Beacon会竖起小大头针来显示这些障碍物的位置。然后盲人就可以“读懂”这些大头针的位置,从而了解前方建筑物和物体的位置,并绕着它们走)”可知,Mind Beacon通过让盲人提前知道障碍物的位置来给他们提供帮助。故选A项。
根据第四段“The heart of Mind Beacon is a 3D depth sensor that’s connected to a computer. That computer can control motors that are lined up in three rows of three. Each motor controls a pin that can move up and down. When the sensor finds an obstacle, the pin rises. It can rise to three different heights. Each height roughly represents the height of the obstacle. Someone who runs their hand over the nine pins can tell where the obstacle is and its general height.(Mind Beacon的核心是一个3D深度传感器,与电脑相连。那台电脑可以控制排成三排的马达,每排三个。每个电机控制一个可以上下移动的引脚。当传感器发现障碍物时,引脚就会上升。它可以升到三种不同的高度。每个高度大致代表障碍物的高度。用手摸过9个木瓶的人就能说出障碍物的位置和大致高度)”可知,本段详细介绍了Mind Beacon的工作过程。故选B项。
35.词句猜测题。根据后文“She imagines in the future it can be connected to a smartphone, with more little pins to show the exact height of the obstacle. It would feel like a little map showing the location and size of the obstacle ahead.(她设想未来它可以连接到智能手机上,用更多的小针显示障碍物的确切高度。它就像一张小地图,显示前方障碍的位置和大小)”可知,Seoyoung 想改进她的发明,推知ameliorate为“改进”之意,和C项意思相近。故选C项。

Secrets of Great Savers
Wondering how to save more money but have no idea where to cut 36 They can make your money go further and help you live a more financially secure(保障的) life. You can form a “hand-me-down” club. Since kids grow so fast, their clothes quickly become unwearable even though they still look nice. 37 Instead of making your local kids’ clothing store rich, organise a club of parents from your child’s school or daycare to exchange hand-me-down clothing.
38 Always buy the same colour and style of socks for your child—preferably white, since you can bleach(漂白) them when they are stained. Since socks always disappear, when you lose one of a pair, you can pair it up with another, because they are all the same.
It is a good idea to take a job for a discount. If you are looking for apart-time job, fill out applications at shops where you often do your shopping. 39 If you have teenagers in your home who are ready for a job, encourage them to work at your family’s favourite stores with employee discounts too. Not only will you benefit from the discount but you will also gain access to a new world of inside information on upcoming sales!
Why not help your friend move Always help friends pack their belongings and load the truck when they are moving. When people are loading their households into boxes, they usually find items that they no longer need or do not want to pack or unpack. As a result, you can bring home hundreds of pounds worth of frozen food, tableware, books, toys, furniture(家具) and other household items. 40
A.Get socks of one colour.
B.Bleach socks to whiten them.
C.We share four secrets of super savers here.

Last Sunday morning, my parents and I were going on a vacation in Sydney, where my grandparents lived, to celebrate my birthday. Actually, celebrating my birthday in my grandparents’ home had been a family tradition. As a result, their neighbors, warm-hearted and friendly, were familiar with me. Sometimes, they even came to the house and brought me birthday gifts in person.
We took the subway there as usual. When we got off the subway, I found I had lost my bag. The bag was memorable to me because it was given by my parents when I became a senior high school student. It also had some valuable items inside, including an expensive watch, a birthday gift from my grandparents.
I couldn’t help but cry because the bag meant so much to me. “What’s the matter, Lily ” my mom asked. I told her that I might leave the bag on the subway. Hearing that, she comforted me and said, “We have plenty of time. Let’s talk to the staff.”
Instantly, my parents reported the situation to the staff at the subway station. A kind worker smiled to me and said, “If someone found it, they would hand it in.” He asked us to wait patiently for a while, and then he called for help. After half an hour, the worker didn’t give us any information. I started to become anxious and lose hope. My father said, “No news is good news.” However, the worker finally apologized to us and let us await the information on the recovery of the missing bag at home. We had to go to my grandparents’ house first.
In the afternoon, while I, together with my grandparents and my father, was preparing for a birthday party, I heard my mother talking to someone on the phone about my lost bag. My heart was beating violently, and I was expecting something extraordinary to happen. Sure enough, my mother got me to answer the phone, “Good news, Lily. The call is just for you, from the kind worker. He said a girl called Beatrice had sent the bag back.” I felt amazed that the girl’s name is the same as my friend’s in Sydney.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I took the phone, and then the voice of the worker who had helped us at the subwaystation came from it.

We were dancing happily when someone knocked at the door.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I took the phone, and then the voice of the worker who had helped us at the subway station came from it. He explained to me that, the kind girl, Beatrice, had picked up my bag on the subway and that she was sorry for not notifying the Lost and Found office in time. I felt infinitely grateful to him and the girl. When I hung up the phone, I circled with excitement. When my father soon fetched the bag, the birthday dinner was ready, and our family was seated at the desk, where we ate, talking and laughing. After dinner, we began to dance to the music. The house was full of harmony and warmth.
We were dancing happily when someone knocked at the door. Grandma stopped dancing and went to open the door. She said “It must be a neighbor who wants to give you a gift, Lily.” In a moment, a beautiful girl entered the house with a bunch of flowers. “Happy birthday, Lily.” said she, my best friend, Beatrice. I warmly welcomed her. When she saw the bag on the sofa, she screamed, “The bag looks like the one I picked up this morning.” We confirmed it and thought it was a coincidence. I said with gratitude, “Thanks, Beatrice. Kindness is always around us.”

C.It doesn’t come off the birds. D.It doesn’t need to be re-charged.
30.Which of the following best describes a person with “rescue behavior”
A.Polite. B.Brave. C.Honest. D.Selfless.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.New tracking devices disappoint scientists
B.Magpies prove to be cleverer than scientists
C.Magpies teach scientists an unexpected lesson
D.Science experiments don’t always go as planned

D.Control.
