Philo Taylor Farnsworth invented the current system of television transmission(传输) and reception in 1928, and it was considered one of the great scientific inventions of the 20th century. It was remarkable because the young inventor had just celebrated his 22nd birthday.
Farnsworth had desired to be an inventor since the age of six. Farnsworth was just 14 when he had the idea of television. On August 26, 1930, about a decade after first having the idea that was the basis of his invention, he received the patent(专利) on the electronic television system. By the end of his life, he had held more than 300 patents.
Farnsworth wasn’t the first person to dream up television, but he was the first person to find a way to make it work without a mechanical aspect. The biggest problem that inventors faced was how to transmit image data. Farnsworth’s central innovation was to imagine a way of doing it that relied on electronic technology alone, and so wouldn’t be slowed down by the abilities of a mechanical image-transmitting system.
Farnsworth dreamed up his idea while he was driving a horse-drawn harrow(耙) on the family’s new farm in Idaho. As he was plowing(犁) a potato field in straight, parallel(平行 的) lines, he saw television. He imagined a system that would break an image into horizontal(水平的) lines and put those lines back together into a picture at the other end. In 1927, Philo and his wife Elma watched as he made the first transmission: A horizontal line was transmitted to a receiver in the next room. Two years after that first transmission, Farnsworth sent an image of Elma and her brother, making her the first woman on TV.
Farnsworth thought his invention had realistic prospects. “If we were able to see people in other countries and learn about our differences, why would there be any misunderstandings ” he asked. “War would be a thing of the past.”
24. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Farnsworth had the idea of inventing the television since he was six.
B. Elma and her brother were on TV together in 1929.
C. Farnsworth was the first person to dream up television.
D. The first television invented by Farnsworth appeared in 1930.
25. What was the biggest challenge Farnsworth faced when developing the system of television
A. How to recognize the picture.
B. How to make the picture clearer.
C. How to transmit image data using electronic technology.
D. How to improve the abilities of the mechanical image-transmitting system.
26. Which of the following can best describe Farnsworth’s process of inventing the system of television
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. Nature is an endless source of inspiration. D. Actions speak louder than words.
27. What did Farnsworth think of his invention
A. It inspired people to live a comfortable life.
B. It helped clear up misunderstandings between people in different countries.
C. It enabled people to understand wars deeply.
D. It encouraged us to be curious about the outside world.
C
For all the importance we place on words, whether spoken or written, much of the communicating we do on a regular basis comes through body language. According to pioneering research by Dr. Albert Mehrabian, only 7 percent of the meaning from human communication comes from the actual spoken words used. An additional 38 percent comes from people’s tone of voice, while a large 55 percent comes from body language.
Researchers have long identified that certain kinds of body movements and facial expressions can communicate information about the emotions we happen to be experiencing at the time. But are these emotional signals shaped by different cultures or are they universal to all humans
A new research article published in the journal Emotion attempts to answer this question through a cross-cultural study. The researchers traveled to Ratanakiri, Cambodia to study members of a distant Kreung hill tribe(部落). Living in Cambodia’s highlands, the Kreung are still largely separated from the outside world except for occasional visitors. They have yet to be assimilated(同化) as many other societies have been.
In the study, a set of videos were prepared featuring an American woman, displaying three positive emotions(happiness, love and pride) and three negative emotions(anger, fear and sadness) using body language alone. The effectiveness of these videos was tested using thirty-four American participants. The videos were then presented to twenty-six Kreung individuals(eleven of whom were female). They were asked to describe the emotions being displayed in their own words.
Results showed that the Kreung participants tended to be quite accurate in guessing which emotions were being presented. The overall accuracy rate was sixty-two percent though their accuracy in detecting specific emotions such as anger and happiness was far higher. Overall, there was no significant discrepancy between Kreung and American raters in detecting emotions, though American participants did much better in detecting pride and love.
Still, the study does suggest that body movements can express emotions such as anger, fear, sadness and love even to individuals belonging to different cultures. Emotional signals reflect basic human needs and desires that all humans share. Learning more about how basic biology and social factors shape the way we communicate may well be essential in helping to understand ourselves better.
28. Why were the Kreung chosen in the study
A. They live a hard and poor life. B. They make a living by developing tourism.
C. They enjoy a relatively unaffected culture. D. They use body language alone to communicate.
29. How does the writer describe the results of the study in Paragraph 5
A. By using pictures. B. By telling stories. C. By analyzing causes. D. By making comparisons.
30. What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Difference. B. Communication. C. Relation. D. Balance.
31. What did the researchers conclude from the study
A. Emotional signals are essentially languages.
B. Emotional body language may go beyond culture.
C. Humans share all the emotional body movements.
D. Biology and social factors affect basic human needs and desires.
D
The increase in primate(灵长类动物) ecotourism is causing stress-related behaviors in monkeys, according to a new study.
The study, led by the University of Portsmouth, looked at the impact of a single engine motor boat approaching a community of proboscis monkeys(长鼻猴). Those monkeys are unusual with their very long noses, which makes them appealing to tourists. And many of the boats carrying the tourists approach the primates quickly and loudly, often reaching the river banks just a few meters away from the wildlife.
The researchers conducted the experiment by approaching the monkeys in a motor boat with different speeds and travel distances—fast-close(approaching the monkeys for 10 seconds when 40 meters away at a speed of 14.4k m/hr), slow-close(approaching the monkey for 40 seconds when 40 meters away at a speed of 3.6 km/hr), and slow-far conditions(approaching the monkeys for 20 seconds when 100 meters away, at a speed of 3.6 km/hr).
The results showed that the monkeys displayed stress-related behaviors for longer in the fast-close and slow-close conditions and also reduced feeding as a result of the boat approaching in the fast-close condition. Once the boat started to approach, the proboscis monkeys showed repeated scratching(挠) and often moved quickly backwards to hide in the trees. This could potentially cause the monkeys to leave their safe sleeping sites and to go deep into the forest as it gets dark, where they could face a higher risk of predation(捕食行为).
“Collectively, our findings suggest that the approach of a single motor boat led to stress in proboscis monkeys when they were approached as closely as 60 meters from the other side of the river, regardless of the speed of approach,” said Dr Marina Davila-Ross, lead author of the study.
The researchers thus propose that guidelines for primate tourism in the riverside areas should include an approach speed of no more than 4 km/hr within 100 meters of the proboscis monkeys. They suggest it is also important to keep a distance, preferably no closer than 60 meters away, from the monkeys.
“Such information might be helpful for tourists, allowing them to modify(修改) their behaviors when visiting the primates and when encouraging guide s to follow the guidelines,” Dr Davila-Ross added.
32. What did the researchers’ experiment show about proboscis monkeys
A. They found the slow-close condition most stressful.
B. They tended to go hunting when faced with danger.
C. They lost their sense of safety at the sound of motorboats.
D. They lost their way very easily at the sight of motorboats.
33. What do the researchers advise tourists to do
A. To approach proboscis monkeys less frequently.
B. To avoid getting too close to proboscis monkeys.
C. To ask guides for more information about proboscis monkeys.
D. To behave themselves while trying to feed proboscis monkeys.
34. Which of the following may be the writer’s attitude towards primate ecotourism
A. Concerns. B. Confidence. C. Disapproval. D. Disinterest.
35. What can be the best title of the text
A. Primate Ecotourism: a better understanding of primates
B. Primate Ecotourism: getting close to the primates
C. Primate Ecotourism: the conservation of primates
D. Primate Ecotourism: a negative effect on primate behavior

Most people believe that pencils are made from lead, but this isn’t quite true. They’re actually made of a mineral called graphite(石墨).
36 During the late Middle Ages, in a village called Borrowdale, in England, a group of locals saw a few uprooted trees. 37 On e of them had the idea that this dark substance could be used to mark sheep so owners could record and track them. This discovery by those curious locals paved the way for the modern pencils.
You may wonder why solid graphite can leave its color behind. 38 Graphite is made of carbon layers. When we use it as a pencil, the carbon from the pencil rubs off and gets deposited(沉淀) onto the fibers of the paper. These deposited pieces stick to the fibers of the paper and firmly remain there.
39 You could stain your clothes and make your hands dirty. Later, people came up with some ideas. For example, in the late eighteenth century, an officer in Napoleon’s army designed the wooden pencils we see today. He roasted a mixture of water, clay and graphite at about 1,900 °F. After this mixture cooled down, he put it within a long wooden covering. This is how the wooden pencil came into being.
When you want to remove your writing, you need to turn to an eraser. The functioning of an eraser is based on a common principle. Erasing happens because of the friction that develops between the eraser material and the paper. When you rub an eraser on the paper, the resulting friction can produce heat, which helps the eraser become sticky, stickier than the paper. 40
A. Over the years, graphite’s uses have changed a lot.
B. Dealing with graphite directly can cause a great mess.
C. This feature is due to the physical quality of graphite.
D. When the quantity of clay is increased, the pencil becomes harder.
E. After further investigation, they found strange dark matter underneath.
F. Therefore, it attracts the graphite substances from the pencil onto itself.
G. The story of the discovery of graphite for use as a pencil is quite interesting.

My wife and I were at a wonderful birthday celebration yesterday for a dear family friend, and the party was filled with many friendly faces, some of whom I had not seen for a while.
Among those faces was a man, who is now an accomplished and highly-regarded lawyer. I interacted with him in a professional sense about 20 years ago. At that time, he and I worked closely together over a period of about six months. We spent some time together, and I got to ask him lots of questions during that time. I don’t think about that time of my life often anymore, but every time I do, I think of him fondly. He was smart, competitive and a great guy.
When we ran into each other yesterday, it became a wonderful opportunity to catch up with the old days. We spoke a lot about the life 20 years ago. We also talked about kids, family and updates on professional pursuits... all the usual stuff. After seeing him, the memories of that time came back vividly. At that time, we were working together on the preparation for a case he was going to handle. We had many conversations about how to prepare for the case. And how he and I got through the difficult period came to my mind immediately.
On the way back home from the party, I thought about the many conversations we had. And then I remembered that he had sent me a book that he said was very important to him but unfortunately, I placed it in the basement without reading. So when I got home, I went into the basement, where I kept all sorts of things from my life.

第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
And thankfully, I was able to find the book. I sat downstairs quietly and anxiously started to read the book. The book seemed ordinary but there was a folded note inside. I unfolded and began to read the note. From the note, I learned that he had met with some trouble and needed money. I had no idea this was going on, nor did he ever said anything about it, so I hadn’t lent any money to him. I thought about how helpless he must have been at that time and that I could have been a better friend.
Immediately, I found his address and drove to his home. On the way to his home, I tried to find suitable words to apologize to him. Half an hour later, I arrived at his home. I knocked. The door opened and he stood in front of me with confusion written all over his face. I gave him a big hug and told him how sorry I was and asked for forgiveness. He said he had never got angry because he knew I would have lent him the money if I had read the note. At that moment, I was overwhelmed with emotions and tears started to stream down my face. We looked at each other fondly and smiled —because we are both thankful that we are in each other’s lives still after 20 years.

One possible version:
And thankfully, I was able to find the book. I sat downstairs quietly and anxiously started to read the book. The book seemed ordinary but there was a folded note inside. I unfolded and began to read the note. From the note, I learned that he had met with some trouble and needed money. I had no idea this was going on, no r did he ever said anything about it, so I hadn’t lent any money to him.

Text 10
W: I moved to Ghana from England because my husband, Robin, took a new job there. Our house there was near the Volta River. With few people around our home, I turned to nature. I felt a sense of relief in this new place.(17)
One day, I found a baby bird. His nest was blown from a tree. I placed him in a box with towels. For the next 84 days, wherever I went, it would fly around me. He liked to jump to my hand to rest. So sometimes, I at e and went to the toilet one-handed, as he was sleeping in my hand.(18)
It wasn’t strange to name a bird, but I never gave him a name. I knew the bird didn’t belong to me—I had to remind myself that he needed to return to the wild.(19) Almost three months later, the bird looked like an adult one. It was time for him to go. I flew back to England for Christmas and during that time my husband let the bird fly away.
Raising this bird encouraged me to do something big. Later, I joined a local conservation group and brought out a book about our story. (20)
