Last weekend, my kids and a few other kids from the neighborhood volunteered to help me wash my car. My 10-year-old daughter came up with the idea of washing other people's cars as well. It was very hot outside. And she wanted to give juice for a low cost but not free. I felt happy and decided to help her.
She asked me, “What if we make this ‘a smile car wash’， mommy ” I couldn't hold back my tears and encouraged her and other kids to go inside the house and come up with ideas. While I kept myself busy in drying the car, the kids walked up to me with a board of beautiful signs of smiles. They had “Free Car Wash” written on it and the theme of their exercise was “Smile”. Generally speaking, we gather information with our minds and bodies in different ways, such as seeing, hearing and doing. Then our brains deals with that information, organizing it and connecting it to things we are already aware of. In other words, our brains will deal with the information in different ways. Zheng He was one of China’s most famous explorers. Towards the end of the fourteenth century, his fleet (舰队) sailed to countries far away.
Zheng He had over 300 ships, some of which were over 150 meters long, and could carry up to 1,000 people. Besides, the ships carried gold, silver, silk, china and other treasures to give as gifts to the rulers of other countries. Some ships even had earth on board so that the sailors could grow their crops for food.
On Zheng He’s first voyage, he set sail across the Indian Ocean. His fleet travelled many days far away from land. One day, they were hit by a storm. All the sailors thought the fleet was going to sink. Then a strange light appeared and after that, the storm passed. The strange light was probably electricity from the thunderstorm (雷雨), but the sailors in Zheng He’s fleet believed it was a sign of protection from the gods. With the belief, they were happy to follow Zheng He wherever he led them.
Zheng He completed seven famous voyages between 1405 and 1433. He visited many countries in Asia and Africa. He brought back many gifts from the countries he visited, such as medicines, pearls (珍珠) and strange animals. The most famous of them were a giraffe and a zebra.
In 28 years of travelling, Zheng He had managed to share the glory of China with many different countries. When he died in 1435, the stories of his travels made him one of China’s most famous sailors.

A unforgettable community service
Last Friday, I saw a notice in my community calling on people to perform voluntary service which sparked my great interest, urging me to share the news with my family. After a heated discussion, we decided to help with trashing packing.
On Sunday morning, we joined our neighbors and teamed up with others to work more efficiently. The trash was smelly and the amount was so discouraging that at one point I almost wanted to back out, but my teammates encouraged me to carry on. When we saw our community finally took on a new look, we all felt proud.
Exhausted but satisfied, I returned home. It was not until then that I realized that exhaustion is nothing compared to the joy of taking on responsibility as a member of the community.

From January 5th to January 13th, there is a Broadway musical Jersey Boys showing on Tianqiao Performing Arts Center. It's the story of the rise and fall of the singer Frakie Valli and the 1960s rock 'n' roll group Four Seasons. Since its 2005’s first performance in New York, the musical has won 57 major awards worldwide.
If you are interested, please remember the time is 2: 30 and 7: 30 p. m, January 5th through January 13th. The ticket price is from 199 to 1, 299 yuan. You can book the tickets on the website.
Here is an event for wood arts lovers. The Chinese woodcarving master Lu Guangzheng is holding an exhibition at the National Museum. The exhibition is open till January 21st. But the museum is closed on Mondays. The opening time is from 9: 00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. What's more, the tickets are free. If you like it, don't miss it.
