I knew it was going to be a bad fireworks season this year when I saw so many different tents selling them to the public. I was right. The bangs and booms(噼啪声)started before the first of January and lasted way pa st the fourth. I have never been a big fan of fireworks since I was a boy. It was then that a local fair set off a huge show near our house and I saw how the noise terrified our dogs. I sat on the floor with them during the whole show, holding their shaking bodies.
I know a lot of people enjoy the colorful light shows the fireworks can put on at times. They can be bright and beautiful. Still, I find that I prefer the gentler lights of summer to these noisy ones. I love seeing the moon rising above the hills in the evening. Its gentle, smiling face always reminds me that someone loves me and is watching over me from above.
The shinning stars also always look so heavenly and wonderful when you take the time to look up into the skies and watch them shine. I also love the beautiful, blinking(眨眼的)lights of the fireflies this time of the year. Seeing their lovely, little lights as they fly around always fills my heart with light and delight as well. It warms my soul and reminds me of what a perfect world we live in.
I think we all might do better to grow the gentler lights within ourselves. Our society seems to praise and admire those who come off as booming and brash(自以为是的).
24. Why does the author mention his childhood’s experience
A. To share an old story.
B. To explain his tiredness of fireworks.
C. To stress a joyful atmosphere with fireworks.

25. Why does the author prefer lights like the moonlight
A. Because they are bright, and beautiful.
B. Because they give him pleasant feelings.
C. Because they don’t scare his dogs any more.
D. Because they keep him free from being monitored.
26. How does the author feel when seeing the fireflies
A. Grateful. B. Joyful. C. Determined. D. Beloved.
27. What would the author write about in the following paragraph
A. Why gentler lights are better than noisy ones.
B. What gentler lights will really bring to our life.
C. How we can make the world a gentler place.
D. When we can stop great noises such as fireworks.
C
Going through life can be very challenging at times. When we were young no one told us how hard it would be in the future. One of the biggest problems of adult life is having self-doubt. It is tiresome and can kill your confidence if not controlled from the get-go.
We will all experience self-doubt, which is natural. It happens to us during normal days or whenever we are going to start a new job, a new task, or a new relationship. Anything new in life will make you somehow doubt yourself. This sort of feeling forces you into a dark abyss(深渊)where nothing seems to go right and you might feel like giving up. That is the time to be strong.
There are some people out there that mistake self-doubt for something else. Self-doubt is the feeling that you are unsure about one or more parts of yourself. For example, when starting a new job, you might feel inexperienced or think that you are not fit enough for the job.
Self-doubt isn’t all that bad. Low-level of self-criticism is actually good for you. It motivates you and pushes you to be better in life, to become greater than yesterday. Such feeling will push you to work harder and faster than before and will also increase your productivity, but it should be a low level of self-criticism. You don’t want to punish yourself over things that are beyond your control.
In order to be a better version of ourselves, tough love can be a good motivator but we don’t need to become a drill sergeant(教官)while doing that. Over-criticizing ourselves actually does more harm than good, and I say this from experience. Overworking and a fear of failure only lead to self-damage.
28. What does the author want to convey about self-doubt in Paragraph 1
A. Its levels. B. Its causes.
C. Its types. D. Its harms.
29. What’s the author’s view about self-doubt
A. It is an unnatural thing for all of us.
B. It can happen anywhere at any time.
C. It only makes us weak and disappointed.
D. It can be easily avoided with our efforts.
30. Why does the author talk about a new job in Paragraph 3
A. To state how hard it is to start it. B. To stress it needs our experience.
C. To explain how self-doubt starts. D. To tell the normal feelings to get it.
31. Self-doubt is beneficial only when ________.
A. you keep it at a proper level B. you overlook yourself
C. you punish yourself often D. you work all the time
D
More than 80 percent of global heat is absorbed by the ocean, which has a massive capacity to store and give off heat. High sea-surface temperatures are causing long-term damage to coral reefs(珊瑚礁). Corals are dying. The IPCC(政府间气候变化专门委员会)projects that up to 90 percent of coral reefs could disappear if global warming reaches 1.5℃. Another reason corals are in trouble is because of ocean acidification. Higher carbon dioxide levels have shift ed the chemistry of the ocean, making it more acidic, and corals and sea creatures have trouble growing in acidic conditions.
When ocean water warms, it expands in volume. This is a major cause of the rise in sea levels, along with the water added to the ocean by the melting of land-based glaciers(冰川). The sea level has risen by an average of 20 centimeters since the late 19th century, and the research by scientists studying the last 25 years of satellite data found that the ocean water is rising faster and faster. If it continues at its current rate, the rise in sea level by 2100 will be more than double the current estimates. Sea level rise leads to the destruction of coastal wetlands, flooding and damage to water ecosystems.
Temperature and precipitation(沉淀)are key elements of climate. A warmer climate means that more water rises from both the land and ocean, and a warmer atmosphere holds more of that water. Scientists have noticed that there are more heavy rainfall events. Additionally, higher water temperature in streams, lakes, and rivers lead to lower levels of dissolved oxygen in the water, which impacts the survival and populations of fish and other sea life.
Especially troubling are the extreme weather events that are happening more often around the world. Hurricanes are ramping up in intensity, particularly in North Atlantic. The year 2017 was a busy one for Atlantic hurricanes. Meanwhile, in the western United States, the state of California has had record-setting drought conditions, which began in 2012.
32. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 1
A. Global warming has little damage to the land.
B. Ocean acidification affects the sea temperature.
C. Coral reefs are in danger of disappearing.
D. Corals and sea creatures need critical surroundings.
33. What can be known from Paragraph 2
A. Sea level rise has positive effect on sea animals.
B. By 2100 the sea level will rise 20 centimeters.
C. Global heating is the direct cause of wetlands destruction.
D. The rise of sea level is beyond our imagination.
34. What does the underlined part “ramping up” in last paragraph mean
A. Increasing. B. Failing. C. Appearing. D. Changing.
35. Which is the suitable title for the text
A. High Sea-surface Temperatures to Creatures
B. Global Warming, What Damages It Causes
C. Ways to Stop High Sea-surface Temperatures
D. Extreme Weather Events and Global Warming

Slow down the pace. The biggest difference between modern literature and classic literature is the pace. Modern reading can often feel like a short race. 37 If you try to apply short race techniques to a long distance run you will get tired pretty quickly. Well, the same is true with reading classic books.
38 One of the challenges when you start to read classics book is the language style. Words andphrases that are out of date or no longer relevant can make the writing difficult to understand. But, the key to reading classic books and enjoying them is taking time to understand them. So don’t shy away from looking things up.
Listen to the audio(有声的)book. Sometimes the best way to devote yourself to a classic book is to listen to it. Many classic books were intended to be read aloud. Books used to be very expensive, so people shared them. This meant that a family might gather together to listen to a few chapters every night. 39
Choose your favourite. Finally, the key to reading classic books and actually enjoying them is to choose one that actually appeals to you. Classic Books can get mixed up into a single genre(流派)“Classic”. 40 Think about what you already love reading and look for books that suit your interest.
A. Look up dates and history.
B. But that’s really not the case.
C. Don’t be afraid to look things up.
D. However, classic literature is more of a marathon.
E. A character list can keep who is related to whom in check.

About 7 years ago, I was a volunteer at an aquarium(海洋馆). It was amazing because I adored the ocean. At the time though I wanted to be a biologist, so it was extra special for me.
“Shark Week” rolled around, and I was excited because I love sharks. Apparently everyone else wanted to work shark week too as the schedule filled up fast.
I had one shift during shark week. I was dropped off at the aquarium in the morning. I went to my station with a coworker ... and then I started feeling sick.
I started trembling a bit, and then my stomach started aching. Apparently my face was super pale and my coworker noticed that I was about to fall over. She walked me to one of the employees only doors away before having to go back to her station. I made my way slowly to the office and explained the situation. I needed to go home.
I wanted to cry. That was my only shift during shark week and I had to miss it. And on top of that(除此之外), I had to take the bus home. Normally I didn’t mind taking the bus home, but my bus stop was up a very steep(陡峭的)city hill. It was quite a climb even if you weren’t sick. But I still managed to do it.
Now, on that walk, there was a cupcake shop before I reached my stop. My mo m would give me some money to buy myself a treat after work usually so I went there frequently. Well they also had homemade ice cream there. And considering it was a hot summer day and I felt sick, I decided to stop in.

第四部分 写作
第一节
Dear Alisen,
It is a great honour for me to share my ideas about attending the school’s fantastic speech contest themed “Tang Poetry and Song Ci in My Eyes” last week.
As a Chinese student, I’m really proud that foreigners are admiring Chinese culture. Generally speaking, all the speeches were well organized and the participants were passionate. But there is also room for improvement. First, most participants didn’t quite understand the real meaning of the poems and Song Ci they recited, so they didn’t express the emotions behind the poems so well. Besides, many Chinese characters were wrongly pronounced, which made the lines sound a little bit funny.
So I suggest next time before the speech contest you teach the participants the backgrounds and meanings of the poems and Song Ci. Only when they truly understand them can they give more excellent performances.
Wish you all the best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
I walked up to the counter and asked for a tiny cup of ice cream. The woman behind the counter did the usual customer service: “How’s your day ” I talked about how I had to go home because I wasn’t well enough to work and that I would end up missing shark week because of it. I almost broke out crying. Hearing my story, she looked sad and kindly comforted me. Soon I finished my ice cream, stood up and reached my hand to my pocket.
Before I could even pull out my wallet, the woman held up her hand. Gladly she told me that it was on her. Turning to the fridge, she brought a bigger ice cream and told me to feel better with it. I might’ve actually started crying then, I’m not sure, but I did thank her about a million times before going to my bus. She made my terrible day just a little bit better. She didn’t have to, but she did. I hope life has been kind to her.
