先思考：给小男孩something的目的是什么？

In the letter I expressed my sincere apology for breaking her window and my wish that ten dollars could cover repair bills. And at the end of the letter, I signed my name.Unsure about the way she responded to the letter, I didn’t make my way to the old lady’s house immediately. Instead, I waited until the darkness fell. Having tiptoed to her home, I put the letter in front of her door with great caution and left. Though my sense of guilt was relieved a little after sending the letter, I kept tossing and turning that night, wondering whether she would forgive me or not.

She reached into her pocket and took an envelope. It was what I left in front of her house last night! So astonished was I that I gazed at the envelope, utterly speechless. Sensing my confusion, she patted me gently on the back and replied with a mysterious smile. As I proceeded to deliver newspapers, I tore open the envelope. Inside was ten dollars and a short note which read “I’m delighted that you choose honesty and integrity. Your attitude counts more than money.” Tears of gratitude filling my eyes, I would always treasure the 10 dollars as a reminder of my mistake and a lesson about forgiveness.
