“Why do you have 9,632 emails in your inbox ”
I looked at my husband, “Um...is that a lot How many are in your inbox ”
“About twenty,” he replied. I looked at my inbox. There were emails I had meant to deal with; emails from customers and the kids’ schools with information I needed; there were time-sensitive offers I’d never got around to investigating; endless updates from the social media platforms I subscribed to, and the rest I had kept just in case.
I realized that I had become an email hoarder (囤积者). I clearly had a problem and I needed to act. I paused my work and began to delete unwanted emails. An hour later I made little progress.
“Just delete the whole lot,” my husband strongly suggested.
Could I do that It was appealing. But I paused. I couldn’t. I did have a problem! Then I decided to compromise. I kept the last month’s emails and deleted everything else. I looked at my almost empty inbox. Wow, it felt so good.
To be honest, I feel genuine anxiety about deleting emails, FOMO ( 错失恐惧症) is a real problem for many people like me with email issues. So many emails are “offers”. What if that amazing offer never comes up again But the fact is that they do...frequently. What’s more, these great offers are often time-sensitive and so we hang on to them “just in case”, then miss the deadline anyway and still don’t delete them.
I found it useful to limit my emails to 50 and I use an email system which ensures all school emails go into a separate inbox, so I can see at a glance when “Dress like a Roman” day or “Bring an onion to school” day (yes really) is coming up! I feel more in control and organized now. I’m on top of my inbox. Now I’m off to handle the cupboard under the stairs!
What was the author’s immediate reaction to her husband’s suggestion
A. She approved of it. B. She felt annoyed at it.
C. She hesitated about it. D. She was astonished at it.
What led to the author’s anxiety about deleting emails
A. The deadline that she forgot to meet. B. The fact that she liked keeping emails.
C. The offer that she might never give. D. The fear that she would miss out something.
What does the author do with her inbox at last
A. Adopt an email system to classify all emails. B. Separate unwanted emails into a new inbox.
C. Reply to school emails as soon as possible. D. Set a restriction to the number of emails.
What is the text mainly about
A. How the author became an email hoarder. B. How the author takes her inbox in control.
C. Why FOMO is a real problem. D. Why emails turned out to be a headache.

Imagine you need milk, so you go to the grocery store to pick some up, only to find there are dozens of options. These days, you have to make a decision on not only the percentage of fat you want, but also what source you want your milk to be coming from: cows, soybeans... You have no idea what milk to pick. There are so many choices that you are confused.
This phenomenon is known as the paradox (悖论) of choice and it is becoming a concern in the
modern world, where more and more options are becoming easily available to us. While we might believe that being presented with multiple options actually makes it easier to choose one that we are happy with, and thus increases consumer satisfaction, having too many options actually requires more effort to make a decision and can leave us feeling unsatisfied with our choice.
The idea was popularized by American psychologist Barry Schwartz when he published his book, The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less. Schwartz, who has long studied the ways in which economics and psychology intersect (交叉), became interested in seeing the way that choices were affecting the happiness of citizens in Western societies. He identified that the range of choices that we have available to us these days is far greater than that people had in the past; however, consumer satisfaction has not increased as much as traditional economics theories might expect.
Schwartz identified that the paradox of choice carries the most consequence for people that are maximizers. Maximizers, unlike satisficers, are concerned with making the best choice instead of simply making a choice that they are happy with. When there are many options available to maximizers, it becomes harder for them to determine which is the best, which can cause them to feel a great deal of regret after they have made a choice.
Instead of believing that freedom of choice is unlimited, Schwartz advocates that the role of psychology and behavioral economics should be to find the kind of limitations on freedom that can lead to the greatest level of happiness within society.
What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning buying milk in paragraph 1
To lead in the topic.
To draw a conclusion.
To show that we have more choices when shopping.
To indicate that people pay greater attention to health when shopping.
What does the paradox of choice suggest
More options mean less satisfaction.
Consumer satisfaction has greatly increased.
People are happy with more choices.
Modern people are happier than their ancestors.
What can be learned about satisficers
A. They aim for the very best. B. They tend to follow their feelings.
C. They often regret their decisions. D. They have trouble making a decision.
What does Schwartz suggest people do
A. Hold on to their beliefs. B. Accept their own behavior.
C. Give up freedom. D. Limit their own choices.
D
The dodo, a Mauritian bird last seen in the 17th century, will be brought back to a semblance (外观) of life if attempts by a gene-editing company are successful. Gene-editing techniques now exist that allow scientists to extract the dodo genome ( 基 因 组 ) that they believe they can then effectively recreate within the body of a living relative.
The scientists in question said their work, beyond providing an insight into the extinct dodo’s existence, could help inform the conservation of rare species that are not yet extinct. However, there is a fierce debate among biologists over whether this sort of research should be pursued.
Beth Shapiro, the lead paleo-geneticist (古遗传学家) at Colossal, told the Guardian she tried to persuade a museum to let her extract DNA from a preserved dodo exhibited there. She said there were hundreds of dodos in collections around the world, so it had been possible to sequence the dead bird’s genome. But she warned that the revived dodo could never replace what has been made extinct. “It would be crazy to think the solution to the world’s biodiversity crisis was to bring back a proxy.” she said.
Ben Lamm, the chief executive of the company, said they were raising a further 150 million dollars to pursue the research on the dodo. He pointed out that it could assist conservation efforts for many other threatened species around the world, as it would develop techniques that could allow scientists to detect and preserve key features in those existing species that could help them adapt in a changing climate.
Prof. Ewan Birney from European Molecular Biology Laboratory, who was not involved with Colossal’s work, said it would be “very, very challenging” to recreate the dodo genome. He added, “I’ve no idea whether the project will work as they claim, but the question is not just ‘can you do this’, but ‘should you do it ’ … I’m not sure what purpose it serves, and whether this is really the best distribution of resources. We should be saving the species that we have before they go extinct.”
What can we learn about dodo from the text
It is a bird that is only unique to Mauritius.
The research on it has raised conflicting opinions.
It has been successfully brought back to life.
It could be recreated within the remains of a relative.
What does the underlined word “proxy” mean in paragraph 3
A. fake. B. creature. C. model. D. replacement.
What’s Prof Ewan Birney’s attitude towards Colossal’s work
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Conservative.
Which is the best title of the passage
A. Pros and Cons of Reviving Dodo. B. Gene-editing Techniques in Effect.
C. Scientists Trying Hard to Recreate Dodo. D. A Vain Attempt to Bring Dodo Back to Life.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is recently reported that people’s collective stress has reached alarming levels. 36 . It can have serious consequences. A study found that people experiencing long-lasting burnout have up to a 35 percent greater risk of early death. Don’t panic. Here are some active steps you can take to prevent burnout:
Look for meaning at work
You can tolerate stress longer if you believe you’re doing something purposeful and worthwhile. You are more likely to experience burnout-inducing stress when something seems out of control, against your will, or totally meaningless. 37 .
Look for meaning outside of work
If you are struggling to make you work meaningful, giving priority to life outside of work might be especially beneficial. A research shows that people more likely to experience a greater sense of engagement when on the job are those with a hobby.
38
Use separate email accounts for work and personal life, and set up boundaries between work and personal life, then you will be especially more comfortable if you work from home.
Don’t neglect yourself
Physical activity is essential to shaking out stress hormones. 39 . But movement is the most natural evolutionary response to our body’s stress, even light movement helps “complete” the stress cycle.
Recognize when it has become too much
Talk to your boss when you feel your job should be manageable, rewarding and under your control. It’s common for bosses to increase tasks over time if you don’t communicate our needs or limitations, which may be overlooked. 40 .
Work at home when necessary.
Try to separate work and home.
And your hormone levels can be generally affected by emotional states.
Many individuals are less active when they are under stress in order to rest.
Feeling constantly occupied, worried, and overwhelmed can lead to burnout.
If you don’t expect things will improve, consider changing jobs or even careers.
Identify ways in which even the smallest of daily tasks contributes to the lives of others.

In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John’s only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn’t want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can’t aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John’s dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John’s face lit up.

Helping My Parents with Lunar New Year’s Eve Dinner
Lunar New Year's Eve dinner symbolizes family reunion and the arrival of good fortune for the coming year. As a member, I actively participated in the preparations together with my parents.
Our family first made a schedule for this special dinner. Following the schedule, I enthusiastically engaged in a series of tasks, ranging from carefully selecting ingredients at the market to expertly chopping vegetables and even bravely trying my hand at cooking. Despite encountering unexpected challenges along the way, the joy of witnessing my parents' delighted smiles made every effort and the learning experience worthwhile.
This Lunar New Year's Eve dinner is a cherished memory for me, and I eagerly anticipate our big family’s next gathering. (116 words)
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Para.1: Early the next morning, John secretly left home with the money. Decidedly, he bought paper and pens for painting, and then dashed to the competition. After signing up for it, he was given the task. Having collected his thoughts, John took a deep breath and got down to his painting. So absorbed was he that he ignored all the distraction around him. On his paper was visually striking color and appealing patterns. Hardly had John finished the last stroke when he signed with relief, his lips curving into a smile. Every day, he looked forward to the result happily and anxiously, though he felt hungry. (94 words)
Para.2: A week later, a phone call came to John’s home. Hearing what the man said, his mother felt puzzled, not knowing how his son had done it. When John returned, his widened eyes betrayed his surprise as his mother relayed the news. At the same time, a sense of guilt flashed across John. He then explained the whole process and affirmed his unwavering dream. Understanding the truth, John's mother was deeply moved, tears clouding her vision. She unfolded her arms, embracing John tightly, murmuring apologies. John was happy, because he had got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his dream and showcase his talent. Besides, he was awarded for his painting! (100 words)海南中学第六次月考听力原文

W: White T-shirts are very common in our daily life. But do you know the history of the white T-shirts Well, white cotton T-shirts were first worn by the US Navy and by 1948, every American soldier was wearing one too.
