The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the woman to sit on the high court, felt like a personal loss to generations of American women, as well as young girls.
“For women, she was the most important legal advocate in American history. She changed the way the law sees gender,” said Abbe Gluck, a Yale Law School professor and former clerk of Justice Ginsburg. “The United States Supreme Court did not even recognize that the constitution prohibits discrimination based on gender until 1971-and that’s Justice Ginsburg’s case.” Young Ginsburg spoke out loud her dissent (异议) in the face of all the honorable judges in the court, “The court takes away women’s right to make an autonomous choice, even at the expense of their safety. This way of thinking reflects ancient ideas about women’s place in the family and under the constitution.”
In the 1950s, Ginsburg went to Harvard Law School, where she was one of nine women in a class of 500 students. There she became the first female member of the Harvard Law Review. Despite finishing top of her class when she graduated, she struggled to find employment. Eventually, in 1963, she became a law professor at Rutgers Law School, where she turned her attention to gender discrimination.
In the 1970s, the young Ginsburg convinced the entire nation, through her arguments at the Supreme Court, to adopt the view of gender equality where equal means the same--not special accommodations for either gender. She argued six cases before the Supreme Court as a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, winning five.
Gluck said, “Ginsburg cared deeply about our work lives and our personal lives. She got to know our children. She taught me what it means to lead a life committed to the causes of social justice. She demanded a lot from us, but she demands more from herself. I think it is absolutely extraordinary that Justice Ginsburg was both a hero to the women of the 1970s and then an icon to the little girls of today.”
24. What probably turned Ginsburg’s focus to unfair gender treatment
A. Her own experience in seeking a job.
B. Her knowledge acquired in law classes.
C. Her work as a lawyer in Supreme Court.
D. Her struggle in learning in Harvard Law School.
25. What did Ginsburg voice fur in the 1970s
A. Social stability. B. Gender difference.
C. Better quality of life. D. Equal rights for women.
26. Which of the following can best describe Ginsburg
A. Generous and modest. B. Brave and demanding.

One of the most curious features of the modern world is the manner in which design has been widely transformed into something meaningless. But I want to argue design should be the crucial block on which the human environment is shaped and constructed for the betterment and delight of all.
Not surprisingly, in the absence of widespread agreement about its significance and value, much confusion surrounds design practice. In some subject areas, authors can assume common ground with readers. Other subject areas can be so difficult that ho such mutual understanding exists.
Design sits uncomfortably between these two extremes. As a word it is common enough, but it is full of disharmony, has innumerable manifestations (表现), and lacks boundaries that give clarity and definition. As a practice, design generates vast quantities of material, much of it ephemeral, only a small proportion of which has sustained quality.
So how can design be understood in a meaningful sense Design is one of the basic characteristics of what it is to be human, and an essential determinant of the quality of human life. If things are a necessary part of our existence, why are they often done so badly There is no simple answer. Cost factors are sometimes advanced, but the remove between doing something well or badly can be exceedingly small, and cost factors can in fact be reduced by appropriate design inputs.
This book is based on a belief that design matters profoundly to us all in innumerable ways and represents an area of huge, underutilized potential in life. It sets out to explore some reasons why this is so and to suggest some possibilities of change. The intention is to extend the range of what is understood by the term, and examine the depth of design practice as it affects everyday life in a diversity of cultures.
28. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about
A. The causes of confusion. B. The significance of design.
C. The differences in subjects. D. The common ground in people.
29. What does the underlined word “ephemeral” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Meaningful. B. Enormous. C. Short-lived. D. Hard-wearing.
30. What do we know about design
A. Design is just about arts or trends.
B. Cost factors account for inadequate design.
C. The author argues that design is meaningless .
D. Very few are incapable of improvement by proper design.
31. What is the book aimed at
A. Reducing design inputs. B. Persisting in meaningful design practices.
C. Denying previous conception of design. D. Clarifying the confusion surrounding design.
ACDB
根据文章第二段“Not surprisingly, in the absence of widespread agreement about its significance and value, much confusion surrounds design practice. (毫不奇怪,在其意义和价值的广泛一致认同缺失的情况下,许多混乱围绕着设计实践。)” 可知,不同领域对设计的不同理解导致的混乱。故选A。
通过文章第四段“Design is one of the basic characteristics of what it is to be human, and an essential determinant of the quality of human life. If things are a necessary part of our existence, why are they often done so badly There is no simple answer. Cost factors are sometimes advanced, but the margin between doing something well or badly can be exceedingly small, and cost factors can in fact be reduced by appropriate design inputs. (设计是人类生活质量的基本特征之一,也是人类生活质量的基本决定因素。如果事物是我们存在的必要组成部分,为什么它们经常做得如此糟糕?没有一个简单的答案。成本因素有时是先进的,但把事情做得好或做得不好之间的差距可能非常小,而成本因素实际上可以通过适当的设计投入来降低。)”可推知,很多方面都可以通过适当的设计而有所改善。故选D。
31.B 细节理解。 通过文章最后一段“ The intention is to extend the spectrum of what is understood by the term, and examine the breadth of design practice as it affects everyday life in a diversity of cultures. (其意图是扩大“设计”一词所理解的范围,审查设计实践的广度,因为它影响到文化多样性中的日常生活。)”可推知,这本书的目的是为了追寻更好的设计操作。故选B。
D
You may have noticed sudden, brief twitching (抽动) at some point while your dog was sleeping and wondered if they were dreaming or even expressing some type of discomfort.
These involuntary movements only occur during dream states and usually don't last long. So is twitching just a normal part of dreaming, or are there times when you should worry
Dogs sleep an average of 12-14 hours each day. While they sleep, a dog's brain processes information and experiences from the day through dreams. Twitching is often related to active dream cycles in the brain.
According to research by psychologist Stanley Coren, an average size dog will dream about every 20 minutes, and these dreams will last about a minute. Larger breeds have fewer dreams that last longer—about every 45 minutes for 4 minutes. The opposite is true for smaller breed dogs; they will dream about every 10 minutes for up to 30 seconds.
Dogs experience the same dream stages as humans, including non rapid eye movement (NREM), short wave sleep (SWS), and rapid eye movement (REM). During the REM state, a dog's eyes move around behind their closed eyelids, and the large body muscles are turned off so the dream is not physically acted out. The amount of twitching depends on how much these off switches cramp muscle movement.
If your dog sleeps next to you, they may unintentionally disturb your sleep with their sudden body movements. However, it is often advised not to awaken a dog that is twitching in their sleep unless they are clearly in distress.
A bad dream or night terror could be the cause of these involuntary movements, and they may wake up frightened. Try to avoid touching them so they don't bite you as a result of being shocked and panicked. Instead, gently call your dog's name until they respond. Speak calmly and tell them that they are safe and secure after they wake up. While they appear to be pretty active in their sleep, dreaming dogs may be slow to awaken.
32.Which of the following influences how often dogs dream
A.Their sleeping time.
B.Their body size.
C.Their daily experiences.
D.Their health conditions
33.What does the underlined word “cramp” mean in Paragraph 4
A.Stimulate. B.Analyze.
C.Restrict. D.Monitor.
34.Why is it advised not to wake up a dog twitching in sleep
A.To avoid being bitten by the dog.
B.To ensure the dog adequate sleep.
C.To prevent the dog getting shocked.
D.To escape disturbance from the dog.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.How does Dogs' Brain Work
B.Why do Dogs Dream at Night
C.Why do Dogs Twitch in Their Sleep
D.How does Dogs' Twitch Affect Their Sleep
B C A C
根据画线词上文“During the REM state, a dog's eyes move around behind their closed eyelids, and the large body muscles are turned off so the dream is not physically acted out.”以及“The amount of twitching depends on how much these off switches”可知,抽搐的程度取决于这些开关对肌肉运动的限制程度。
根据最后一段中“Try to avoid touching them so they don't bite you as a result of being shocked and panicked.”
根据第一段中“You may have noticed sudden ,brief twitching (抽动) at some point while your dog was sleeping and wondered if they were dreaming or even expressing some type of discomfort.”

6.with 7.occupying 8.smaller 9.was 10.the
故填was。

I was backpacking and planned to climb a volcano called Volcan Baru. At 3,474m, it is the highest peak in the country and one of the only places on Earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time. It is an active volcano, but last erupted around 1550.
I set off before sunrise. It was a little cold, so I had pulled on tights under my trousers. I intended to reach the top by midday, and then return before dark to get a lift to my hotel.I’ve always felt safe travelling as a woman on my own, which I’ve done since my 20s. I love the freedom. When I got to the base of the volcano at 7 in the morning, the ranger disagreed to let me go alone, but said OK because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. It was not dry as you might imagine a volcano might be — there were trees and flowers all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who worked around there.I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph.
Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me. I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively (挑衅) towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see their teeth looked sharp, and that they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. I’d never been bitten by a dog, and I couldn’t help but fear what would happen. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.

Terrified, I slowly kept walking, saying, “Come on, good dogs!” Suddenly, one dog dashed up towards me, sinking his teeth into my leg. “Oh, my God, I’m in a dog’s mouth and he’s trying to swallow me,” I thought to myself, with the pain taking my breath away as I felt his teeth in my flesh. I picked up a rock to fight him off, but was nervous that he would go for my neck or that the other one would come to attack me together. Facing these two aggressive dogs,I desperately felt at a loss. Hardly could I step out of the trouble on my own.
Just at this critical moment, a pickup appeared, driven by the ranger: Seeing the state I was in, he immediately stopped his pickup, opened the door, and signaled to me to get in. When we reached the base, he helped me bandage the leg up, earnestly reminding me that safety comes first while travelling. I felt relieved and grateful. And from then on, I travel carefully as well as cautiously. After all, nothing is more precious than life.
