I was attacked by a tiger shark in late October 1997. It was near my home on the island of Kauai—a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good, so nothing was stopping us.
That is until a large shark came right up under me and sank his teeth into my lower leg. There had been no splashing. no noise, and I felt no pain, only great pressure on my lower body.
Then I followed my instinct: I punched the shark in the face, again and again which happens to be what the expert advice, until the shark released me. As I swam back into shore, I felt my lower right leg spasming(痉挛). When I looked down, I realized it was gone. The shark had bit my lower leg off. My friends rushed to my aid, and rushed me to hospital.
It was another day before the “fog” lifted, at which point I opened my eyes and realized I was in the hospital—a below-the-knee amputee(截肢). For the next few bedridden weeks, I spent time with my family, and considered the future.
As soon as I was given the OK by my doctors, I did what many of us might consider unthinkable: I started riding the waves again. In fact, my first time back was near the site of his attack. I was unshaken and curious—Was it because of the tides The phase of the moon I also recalled that the morning of the attack the water had a fishy smell. Was that what attracted the shark
I was determined to research sharks, and I did learn something that would change my life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around, I tell Reader’s Digest. “I watched a documentary called Sharkwater, and I learned about the demand for shark fin soup and the fact that 70 million sharks a year are killed for their fins alone.”
My unique situation as a shark survivor empowered me to give sharks a voice. I began working with the Hawaii state legislature to help pass a ban on shark-derived products. I partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and we headed to Washington to urge senators to create a nationwide bill protecting sharks.
24.What is mainly talked about in the first two paragraphs
A.The missing leg. B.The shark attack.
C.The timely rescue. D.The expert’s advice.
25.Why did the author ride the waves again
A.To go on with his unshaken hobby. B.To figure out why he became a target.
C.To keep track of the phase of the moon. D.To explore why the water had a fishy smell.
26.What did the author find after he recovered
A.Humans tend to ignore the dangers. B.Humans can’t survive without sharks.
C.Sharks pose a greater threat to humans D.Sharks are in urgent need of protection.
27.What does author imply in the last paragraph
A.He is speaking in favor of sharks. B.He argues against the bill about sharks.
C.There is widespread doubt about sharks. D.People should give sharks a preference.

A physical checkup often begins with a series of questions: What foods do you eat Do you smoke Getting any exercise New research suggests another telling indicator could be added to that list: What was your college major The study finds one’s chosen field of college study is a statistically significant predictor of health in midlife.
The researchers find the four majors associated with the best midlife health are architecture/engineering, biology/life sciences, business, and—here’s a surprise—communications/journalism. Perhaps chasing after big stories keeps us journalists in shape.
It has long been established that people with more education tend to be healthier. But does one’s major matter To find out, the researchers analyzed data from the nationally representative American Community Survey.
Their sample consisted of 3.7 million United States-born adults between the ages of 45 and 64—the time of life when physical functioning problems start to appear. Participants noted whether they had difficulty walking or climbing stairs, dressing or bathing. A “yes” answer in any of those categories resulted in a grade of relatively poor health.
The researchers focused on the 667,362 participants who earned a bachelor’s degree, but went no further in their education. They noted each person’s college major, which they placed into one of 15 categories. They found substantial differences in health across majors. Two majors are particularly disadvantaged in midlife. The chances of poor health are 1.9 times greater among psychology /social work and law/public policy majors compared to business majors. The researchers argue this is likely due to several factors. Psychology majors tend to suffer from high unemployment and low earnings. Law/public policy majors often enter the field of law enforcement(执行).
The researchers say that they have discovered associations, not proof of causality(因果关系). But they make a convincing case that some majors lead people to live healthier lifestyles than others.
Their findings might even inspire a warning country song: Mammas, don’t let your babies grow up to be psychology majors.
28.What can be learned from the first two paragraphs
A.Smoking can lead to poor health. B.Diet is more important than exercise.
C.Physical checkups keep you healthy. D.College major chould be added to a checkup.
29.How do researchers draw their conclusions
A.By doing face-to-face interviews. B.By following participants’ daily routines.
C.By doing medical examinations. D.By analyzing the representative data.
30.Which of the following is against midlife health according to the researchers
A.Engineering. B.Business. C.Psychology. D.Agriculture.
31.What is the best title of the passage
A.College majors can predict midlife health.
B.More majors in college can improve health.
C.The annual physical exam is necessary to life.
D.People with more education tend to be healthier.

Space is becoming more crowded. On December 3, a Falcon 9 rocket made by Space X thundered into the sky. On board were 64 small satellites, more than any American company had launched before in one go. They have a variety of uses, from space-based-radar to the monitoring of radio-frequency-emissions. They will be working in their orbits(轨道).
These objects are part of the latest breed of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. This launch is just taste of what is planned. Space X and One Web, a communications firm, plan to launch satellites in their thousands, not hundreds. The pair are set to double the total number of satellites in orbit by 2027.
That promises to change things dramatically on Earth. LEO satellites can bring internet connectivity to places where it is still unavailable or unaffordable. This will also be a lasting source of new demand for the space economy. Morgan Stanley, a bank, projects that the space industry will grow from $350 billion in 2016 to more than $1.1 trillion by 2040. New internet satellites will account for a half this increase.
For that to happen, however, three worries must be overcome. Debris (碎片) is the most familiar concern. As long ago as 1978, Donald Kessler, a scientist at NASA, proposed a situation in which, when enough satellites were packed into low-Earth orbits, any collision could cause a chain reaction which would eventually destroy all space craft in the same orbital plane. The syndrome which bears Mr. Kessler’s name weighs heavily on the minds of executives at the new satellite firms. Debris could cause entire tracts (广阔的一片) of space to be unusable for decades.
Solutions exist. One is to grab malfunction satellites and pull them down into Earth’s atmosphere. Another is to monitor space more intensively for debris; a US Air Force program me called Space Fence is due to start in 2019. But technology is only part of the answer. Rules are needed to govern the safe disposal of old satellites from low-Earth orbit.
Cyber-security is a second, long-standing worry. Hackers could take control of a satellite and seal intellectual property, redirect data flows or cause a collision. The satellite industry has been slow to respond to such concerns. But as more of the world’s population comes to rely on the infrastructure of space for access to the internet, the need for action intensifies.
The third issue follows from the first two. If a simple mistake or a cyber-attack can cause a chain reaction which wipes out hundreds of billions of dollars of investment, who is liable Underwriters (承保商) are studying the plans of firms (quite a lot) that wish to operate large numbers of satellites. But there is a long way to go before the risks are well understood, let alone priced.
As space becomes more commercialized, mind-bending prospects open up: packages moved across the planet in minutes by rocket rather than by plane, equipment sent to other small planets, passengers launched into orbit and beyond. All that and more may come, one day. But such activities would raise the same questions as LEO satellites do. They must be answered before the space economy can truly develop.
32.What information can we get about LEO satellites from the passage
A.They are supposed to regulate the space economy.
B.They are expected to increase in large numbers.
C.They are intended to bring internet connectivity to remote areas.
D.They are designed to move beyond the Earth as far as possible.
33.What does the underlined word “plane” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Aircraft. B.Surface. C.Flight. D.Entrance.
34.Which of the following can be classified as the third worry
A.Lack of satellite industry regulations. B.Loss of intellectual property.
C.Crisis of confidence in the field. D.Slow response to satellite industry.
35.What is the author’s attitude toward the launch of LEO satellites
A.It should be further confirmed for its ownership.
B.It should be continued because of its advantages.
C.It should be done carefully to avoid potential risks.
D.It should be stopped in the face of the space economy.

When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. 36 Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.
Small steps create big changes. One of the most common reasons for abandoning dreams is that they simply seem too huge to realize. Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. 37 Then look at each of them. Not so unrealistic now, is it
38 When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. 39 But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.
Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. 40 However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.
A.You can avoid regret.
B.It makes sense to move forward confidently.
C.Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream.
D.It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate.
E.It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose.
F.For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages.
G.You have enough life experience and knowledge to make changes to pursue your dream.

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain. I still remember I was out of breath when I reached the summit. But I loved the challenge of conquering something bigger than myself. I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I’d met in a Facebook group. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to tackle 11, 240-foot Mount Hood.
It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less risk of’ the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 a. m. , following the paths alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about 14 degrees, and we wore layers we could easily remove, knowing the physical effort would make us warm. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau at about 10, 000 feet. just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were unpleasant. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back. hut Mel and I went ahead. We had ice axes (破冰斧), helmets, and crampons (带铁钉鞋底). We were prepared for the climb.
The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. At around 9 a. m. we reached a patch of ice called an ice step. It was about I meter tall and sloped(at a 75-degree angle. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step.
You gain a sense of the ice when you stick your ax and crampons into it, and it felt good. Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly. I heard a crack, and a whole slab of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.

W: Well, let’s see...we left at 9:00, and it’s 10:30 now...so in about 30 minutes.
M: OK, that’s fine. How long will we be stopped
W: 10 minutes, no longer. We are on a tight schedule, and if we don’t get us there on time, we lose money.
M: I understand. I will be as quick as possible. Thank you.

Good morning, my dear fellow doctors, welcome to the TCM Promotion Conference today. Our schedule today includes 3 lectures and 4 academic seminars. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refers to the study of human body, disease diagnosis and the prevention and control of diseases. For thousands of years, Chinese people have accumulated rich experience in fighting against diseases, thus forming their own unique medical theory. It has its own basic principles of diagnosis and treatment, which build the foundation of a systematical theory.
TCM is often interpreted to be the medical science developed by the Han Chinese. There are many other branches of medicine in China, such as Tibetan medicine and Miao medicine, which can be called ethnic medicine. Currently, many Asian countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam, are also practising TCM. What WHO has proved is that it can help ease post-surgery pains, discomfort caused by pregnancy and toothache. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of Zhenjiu and herbs is also well proved by scientific evidence. On May 26, 2002, WHO issued a document that called on 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. Now, let’s welcome the first lecturer today...

Hong Kong is one of the most expensive cities in the world, with its lavish food and giant shopping malls. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the city without stretching your wallet. With good planning, you can enjoy many things in Hong Kong for free.
1. Go gallery hopping and marvel at beautiful artworks
Hong Kong is home to plenty of independent art galleries that exhibit works from various artists around the world. While galleries are spread across the city, we argue that the best place to go gallery hopping is around Central and Sheung Wan.
2. Get up-close with nature at one of the scenic hiking trails
It’s easy to visualize images of Hong Kong’s breathtaking skyline when thinking of the city. But Hong Kong is also filled with thick greenery, mountains, and amazing natural landscapes. So, go hiking at any of the scenic trails the city has. For hiking beginners, the Peak trail is among the easiest and in the end, you’ll be treated to epic views of Victoria Harbour. Also perfect for newbies but a little more into nature is Dragon’s Back.
3. Step back in time at the traditional villages
Due to urbanization, Hong Kong’s traditional villages have been in massive decline throughout the years. With those still standing today, it serves as a time machine to showcase Hong Kong’s past. Among the best-preserved villages is Tsang Tai Uk. The original brick, timber, and granite materials are still well-maintained within the walls.
21.Who may find the Peak trail most fascinating

【答案】32.B 33.B 34.A 35.C
根据第二段“These objects are part of the latest breed of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. This launch is just taste of what is planned. Space X and One Web, a communications firm, plan to launch satellites in their thousands, not hundreds.(这些物体是最新一代低地球轨道卫星的一部分。这次发射只是计划的一部分。Space X和通信公司One Web计划发射数千颗卫星,而不是数百颗)”可知,低地球轨道卫星预计会大量增加。故选B项。
33.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“when enough satellites were packed into low-Earth orbits, any collision could cause a chain reaction which would eventually destroy all space craft in the same orbital”以及后文“Debris could cause entire tracts (广阔的一片) of space to be unusable for decades.(碎片可能会导致整个太空在几十年内无法使用)”可知,一旦相撞会产生连锁反应因而摧毁同轨道层面的所有飞行器,碎片可能会导致整个太空在几十年内无法使用,故划线词意思是“层面”。故选B项。
根据倒数第二段“The third issue follows from the first two. If a simple mistake or a cyber-attack can cause a chain reaction which wipes out hundreds of billions of dollars of investment, who is liable Underwriters (承保商) are studying the plans of firms (quite a lot) that wish to operate large numbers of satellites. But there is a long way to go before the risks are well understood, let alone priced.(第三个问题紧随前两个问题。如果一个简单的错误或一次网络攻击就能造成连锁反应,使数千亿美元的投资化为乌有,那么谁应该承担责任呢?承销商正在研究希望运营大量卫星的公司(相当多)的计划。但要充分了解这些风险还有很长的路要走,更不用说定价了)”可推知,缺乏卫星行业规章制度可以被归类为第三个担忧。故选A项。
根据4、5、6、7段的三个担忧以及最后一段“But such activities would raise the same questions as LEO satellites do. They must be answered before the space economy can truly develop.(但是这样的活动也会引起和低轨道卫星一样的问题。在太空经济真正发展之前,这些问题必须得到回答)”可推知,作者认为低轨道卫星的发射应该小心,以避免潜在的风险。故选C项。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】36.C 37.F 38.A 39.E 40.D
36.根据上文“You may come up with all kinds of excuses. (你可能会想出各种各样的借口。)”提到不想付诸行动的各种借口,可知本空要谈到解决这一问题的方案。下文“Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want. (下面是为什么你应该相信你可以利用吸引力法则得到你想要的任何东西的原因。)”提到建议和方法,可知本空是对下文的概括。选项C项“Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream. (幸运的是,事实是,追逐梦想永远不会太晚。)”起到承上启下作用。故选C项。
37.上文“Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. (通常情况下,你可以把追求梦想看成是一系列重要而又小的步骤。)”说明可以把追求梦想看成重要而又小的步骤。F项“For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages. (例如,挑战自己,把通往成功的道路分为十个阶段。)”为具体举例解释这一方法,和上文内容意思一致,为上文内容的语意递进。故选F项。
38.该空为段首,总结该段内容。根据下文“When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (当人们在弥留之际接受采访,或在自传中讲述他们的生活时,我们常常发现,主要的遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”可知,遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。A项“You can avoid regret. (你可以避免后悔。)”总结下文内容,引出下文中讲到的人们往往会因为什么而后悔。故选A项。
39.上文“In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”提到没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西会使自己感到遗憾。下文“But you don’t ever need to feel this way! (但是你不需要有这种感觉!)”说明空处提到了某种感觉。E项“It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose. (感觉自己还没有找到自己真正的目标是很痛苦的。)”为对上文内容的语意递进,同时引起下文,下文中提到的“feel this way (这种感觉)”指的就是该句中的内容。故选E项。
40.上文“Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. (另一个常见的担忧是,如果你追随梦想,你会“倒退”。)”提到追随梦想,你会有“倒退”的这种担忧。下文“However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating. (然而,在你的旧生活中,那些看起来像是倒退的步骤,可以更有效、更准确地被视为你正在创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。)”为转折,说明这些担忧可能是创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。D项“It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate. (当人们处于自己讨厌的职业巅峰时,这种情况就会出现。)”起到承上启下作用,说明上文提到的情况。故选D项。

【答案】
Dear Sebastian,
I am worried to know that you should be so addicted to TikTok these days. Playing with TikTok too much is bad for your health. Besides, if you spend so much time on it, I’m afraid you will fall behind your classmates sooner or later. In my opinion, you should find something interesting to do if you want to relax. For example, take a walk on the playground with your friends. Alternatively, you can chat with your classmates, which will cheer you up. It doesn’t mean that TikTok should be completely refused in our life, but playing too much will surely affect our study. I know you have a strong will and you are clever. I believe you can get rid of this bad habit quite soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In an instant, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling my name, my heart racing and my mind going blank. After a few seconds, I hit the ground with a bang, my limbs feeling numb. I closed my eyes. Minutes passed, or maybe hours. I wasn’t sure. Gradually, my senses returned, and I became aware of a gentle touch on my arm. Opening my eyes, I saw Mel kneeling beside me, her face filled with worry. “Are you okay ” she asked, her voice trembling.
I pointed to my left leg and then Mel yelled for help. Other climbers came. One explained our situation to the emergency service. We waited anxiously before the rescue finally arrived. Then I was loaded into an ambulance and taken to hospital. I stayed there for a week, knowing that I had survived what could have ended tragically. We learned an important lesson: even with the best equipment and preparation, mountaineering can still be extremely dangerous. From then on, we climbed with even more caution and respect for nature's power.
