阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Some people think that all wild animals are dangerous. Actually, very few of them will attack a man if he leaves them alone. If you met a lion or an elephant, I suppose you would run away; but even a lion will keep away from a man unless it is very hungry. Lions and tigers only kill and eat men when they have grown too old and too weak to catch their usual food, such as deer and other small animals. If you saw a wild elephant, perhaps you would be frightened. Elephants usually run away at once unless you attack them. Some animals get very frightened if they only smell a man; some take no notice at all but quietly walk in another direction. Wild animals only attack hunters when they are afraid that the hunters mean to harm their young ones, or then the hunters shoot at them and make them angry.
21.Lions and tigers will not kill or eat men ____________
A.unless men try to run away B.if they are too old and too weak
C.if they are able to get enough food D.however men act towards them

On a foggy day, I was listening to the radio on my drive when suddenly something caught my eye out the driver’s side window. I turned to look but it wasn’t clear because of the thick fog. Then I didn’t know how long I was knocked out.
It didn’t take me long to realize I couldn’t move either arm and my face was bleeding heavily. Over the next few days in the hospital, I began to get a clearer picture of what had happened. A local high school student, rushing to class, had crossed the center line and hit me head-on. I heard through friends of mine who knew his family that he was very, very upset by what had happened. I felt bad that he had such a burden to bear at such a young age.
Fourteen months after the accident. I was grocery shopping when a woman I didn’t know approached me and asked if I was Suzanne. She introduced herself, and I realized it was the young man’s mother. I appreciated learning how he was doing. He avoided severe injury but needed advice to help with the emotional trauma (创伤) of causing the accident. I could certainly understand the difficulty of getting back behind the wheel of a car. Secretly, I wished I could talk to him myself.
Seven months later, it was time for my daughter’s Christmas band concert at the high school. The first adult I recognized upon entering the auditorium was the mother who approached me in the grocery store. I wondered why she was there. One young man in a white hoodie and ball cap ran up. Suddenly, I realized that it was him, the driver, as he resembled that mother.
I edged my way through the crowd. “Hi, I’m Suzanne,” I greeted. “I just wanted to say that I’m okay, and I was never mad at you. I know this was hard on you.” He apparently knew who I was. “You do ” came a slightly muffled (模糊不清的) answer. “I’m really okay,” I added, patting him on the shoulder and feeling like I was the only person who could let him forgive himself. I was the only person who could give him that gift if he could see me and hear from me that all was well.
24.What might cause the author’s accident
A.Her temporary blindness. B.Her physical burden.
C.The boy’s distraction. D.The boy’s violating the traffic rule.

26.What do we know about the boy
A.He was terribly injured physically. B.He didn’t feel guilty at all.
C.He needed psychological advice. D.He rejected the author’s kindness.
27.Which words can best describe the author
A.Generous and relieved. B.Forgiving and straightforward.
C.Sympathetic and caring. D.Light-hearted and supportive.

In October, Mediterranean fruit flies were discovered in an area of Los Angeles. California is a big farming state, and this was serious news for farmers. The Mediterranean fruit fly, often known as the “Medfly”, is one of the most serious threats faced by farmers worldwide. Once the Medfly makes its way into an area, it can be very hard to get rid of.
The fies lay their eggs in over 300 kinds of fruits and vegetables. When the eggs hatch, they turn into worm-like larvae (幼虫) that can ruin these products. The problem is that it can be hard to know that the flies are there until it’ s too late. That’ s because the fruits and vegetables still look normal even after the eggs are laid inside. So the damaged fruits and vegetables can be sent to other places, allowing the Medflies to spread.
Mediterranean fruit fies were first found in California in 1975, but they really became a problem in the 1980s. Luckily, Califormia has developed a program to control the Medflies. The program involves using planes to drop millions of Medflies over the area. That may sound like a bad idea, but it’ s actually a tricky way to make sure that Medfly numbers go down.
The trick The airplanes only drop male flies, and all of them have been treated so that they are sterile. This means that even though they can mate with female fruit flies, the eggs produced will never grow or hatch.
In the early growing stages, these sterile flies are grown in labs in Hawaii and Guatemala. The insects are colored with a special substance to make sure they won’t be confused with wild Medflies.
These immature insects are then sent to Califormia in huge numbers -around 200 million a week. They’ re raised until they’ re adults, and then they’ re treated to be sterile. Finall , the flies are released from airplanes, sing a special method designed to spread them out over a wide area. The government says that the number of infestations (times when flies are found) has been cut by over 90%.
28.What troubles farmers about the Medflies
A.The wide spread of them. B.The instant damage caused by them.
C.The difficulty in detecting them early. D.The strong team spirit of them.
29.The underlined word “sterile” in paragraph 4 most probably means “ ”.

C.unlikely to become fully grown D.unable to produce young
30.Why are the male flies colored

31.Which can best describe the program conducted in California
A.Practical and successful. B.Complex and inapplicable.

When wildfire smoke from huge fires in Canada blanketed the US in the summer of 2023, emergency rooms saw an increase in admissions for lung problems, heart attacks and other health issues.
Burning fossil fuels has driven climate change, and now climate change is costing people their health and increasingly their lives, says a new report from the medical journal The Lancet. The eighth annual Lancet Countdown, an international analysis that tracks nearly 50 different health-focused issues affected by climate change, calls for an immediate wind-down of fossil fuel use.
Those with the least historical responsibility for causing climate change are feeling the worst effects. Pakistan—a country responsible for roughly 0.3% of all climate-change-causing carbon emissions, suffered huge floods in 2022 that displaced more than 30 million people and killed at least 1,700. However, wealthier countries cannot be spared. In the US, wildfire smoke this summer sent people to the emergency room from New York to Georgia. In Europe, a 2022 summer heat wave resulted in over 60,000 deaths.
About one fifth of all US residents work outdoors; the percentages are even higher in many other countries. When it gets too hot, it gets harder and harder to work. Last year, the report says, outdoor workers lost more than 140 hours each — or several weeks of pay — because of the intense heat.
The human and economic costs are forecast to grow with every tenth of a degree hotter the planet gets. Heat-related deaths, for example, could increase by nearly five times by the middle of the century, if without immediate reductions to carbon emissions.
“I have a young patient who presents with uncontrollable asthma. She lives right next to a highway and is breathing in harmful air from cars burning gas,” Renee Salas, a doctor at Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health says. “So the treatment she needs is electric vehicles, home weatherization and air purification. These are prescriptions I can’t write.”
32.What can be learned from paragraph 3
A.The wildfire has burned large areas of forest. B.Pakistan is largely responsible for climate change.
C.Climate change has caused a lot of human deaths. D.People in wealthier countries have good health care.
33.Which statement will the author probably agree with
A.American residents worked very hard last year.
B.There is nothing people can do about climate change.
C.The economy has also been affected by climate change.
D.Heat-related deaths will double by the middle of the century.
34.What docs Renee Salas imply in the last paragraph
A.She advocates green lifestyle. B.She prefers to drive an electric car to work.
C.Young people are more likely to get asthma. D.Hospitals are short of medicines to treat asthma.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.The advantage of living in the US. B.The cause of climate change.
C.The stress of working outdoors. D.The harm of climate change.
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Some of the oldest living things on our remarkable planet are trees. The record holders are bristlecone pines (狐尾松) of the western United States, quite a few of which are known to be more than 3,000 years old. One individual, discovered in 2012, is estimated to be more than 5,060 years old, making it the oldest known non-clonal tree in the world! 36 : individuals across a number of other tree species have also been around for thousands of years.
So, how do trees survive for thousands of years 37 . Undoubtedly, part of the answer lies in luck. Ancient trees have obviously not submitted to deadly diseases, pests, fires, droughts, windstorms, landslides, or the human axe in the centuries and centuries that they have quietly endured.
The other part of the answer has to do with how trees age. In fact, there is quite a debate about whether ancient trees can be considered “immortal (永生的)”. That is, will such trees ever die if they are not killed by an outside force We may never know the answer to that, but, at the very least, 38 . While cell death is an important factor in the aging of humans and other animals, one study found little evidence of cell death in the ginkgo tree vascular cambium (银杏树维管形成层). In addition, a study of bristlecone pine pollen (花粉) found no significant increase in mutation (变异) rates with age, which is another factor associated with animal aging. 39 .
Older trees benefit greatly from having bodies made mostly of dead woody tissue. In fact, an old tree might be as much as 95 percent dead tissue! Given that it isn’t alive, wood does not require metabolic (新陈代谢的) activity to maintain it, 40 .
A.so an old tree doesn’t really need to do much to keep living
B.This is a question that has something to do with the good luck of trees
C.However, bristlecones are certainly not alone in terms of the oldest creatures
D.This is a fascinating question for biologists that does not yet have a settled answer
E.What’s more, some ancient trees have superior chemical defenses against pests and diseases
F.which means that trees can survive everywhere without being limited by external and internal conditions
G.we know that ancient trees age in ways that are dramatically different from the ways that most animals and even other plants age

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Triiiiiingggggggggggg, the bell rang. Suddenly my heart was raising and fear rose within me. I was nervous as I started to feel sick, really sick. I ran to the bathroom and washed my face with water. I felt my heart pound against my chest, hard and loud as I looked into the mirror and whispered “Come on, you can do this.”
Some were looking forward to this moment for ages; but not me. I felt frightened every time I imagine how uncomfortable it would be on a stage, and being the center of attention. If it was a speech, I could manage, but repeating a scene from a movie that has already been done by professional actors is simply hard because we get compared to them. But there was no choice.
As I made it to the assembly hall, I went over the script in my head. Suddenly I tensed as I couldn’t remember all the lines. Once I was there in the assembly hall, my brain literally stopped working because of all the noise and the tension in the air.
As soon as the teachers who were supposed to judge our performance entered, the crowd quieted down and the performances began. I was really nervous until the first performer was called, because I was really tired of being the first in everything as my name is the first in the register. But the more I waited, the more tired I got of waiting. There came a point where I, who once was feeling sick and scared of performing, wanted to go on stage and get my performance done. That’s when I found out that I was arranged to perform the next day. I was quite happy because maybe that would give me some more time to practice and improve the weaknesses that I saw in others.
The bubble burst when the teacher asked us to perform that day. My heart beat raced and as I walked on to the stage, I was shaking. When I got up along with my friend, I had a good look around. There were 50-60 people, which weren’t much. Then I felt really stupid for being scared of having an audience.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I introduced myself and stared to perform what I had been dying for long before.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After I was done, I looked at the audience, thinking how much I loved doing this.

【原文】
M: As this summer ends, I can remember all my great memories. We’ll start school again in two weeks, as we always do during the first few days of September. So, now, I’ll reflect on one of this summer’s great memories that I’ll share in my English course.
As soon as the previous school year ended in July, my family and I left on a journey to Jamaica. We read articles and watched travel films before leaving our home in the UK. Still, the moment we touched down in the busy capital city of Kingston, we knew we were in for some culture shock.
The differences between the UK and Jamaica were striking. My initial realization was that it was the opposite climate. While the UK is known for its gray skies, Jamaica welcomed us with its warm, tropical sun. Next, the Jamaican landscape was equally inviting. There were rolling green hills, palm trees, and endless beaches.
Our driver took us for our first meal in the city. We loved fresh Jamaican dishes like jerk chicken and fresh tropical fruits. Local people were chatting, laughing, and listening to the local reggae music around the restaurant. I then realized that paradise (天堂) is both a destination and an attitude. Since then, I’ve always tried to keep a piece of this relaxed lifestyle and outlook on life.

阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Some people think that all wild animals are dangerous.
C.if they are able to get enough food D.however men act towards them
22.Some wild animals will become very dangerous ______________
A.when they grow old B.if they are left alone
C.while they are looking for food D.when their young ones are in danger

A.hard to get along with B.difficult to see in the wild
C.unlikely to become fully grown D.unable to produce young
30.Why are the male flies colored
A.To make them distinguishable. B.To make them more attractive.
C.To shorten their treatment process. D.To speed up their growth.
31.Which can best describe the program conducted in California
A.Practical and successful. B.Complex and inapplicable.
C.Eco-friendly but fruitless. D.Time-saving but dangerous.

The problem is that it can be hard to know that the flies are there until it’ s too late..(当卵孵化时,它们会变成蠕虫状的幼虫,会破坏这些产品。
根据划线单词下一句“This means that even though they can mate with female fruit flies, the eggs produced will never grow or hatch. (这意味着即使它们可以与雌性果蝇交配,产生的卵也永远不会生长或孵化。)”可推测,划线单词的意思和“无法生育”相似。选项A“hard to get along with (很难相处)”;选项B“difficult to see in the wild (在野外很难看见)”;选项C“unlikely to become fully grown (不可能完全长大)”;选项D“unable to produce young (不能生育后代)”。故选D。
30.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“In the early growing stages, these sterile flies are grown in labs in Hawaii and Guatemala. The insects are colored with a special substance to make sure they won’t be confused with wild Medflies.(在早期生长阶段,这些不育苍蝇是在夏威夷和危地马拉的实验室里培育的。这种昆虫用一种特殊的物质着色,以确保它们不会与野生Medfly混淆。)”可知,这些不育的雄蝇之所以会有颜色是为了确保它们不会与野生Medfly混淆。故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“These immature insects are then sent to California in huge numbers -around 200 million a week. They’ re raised until they’ re adults, and then they’ re treated to be sterile. Finally , the flies are released from airplanes, sing a special method designed to spread them out over a wide area. The government says that the number of infestations (times when flies are found) has been cut by over 90%.(然后,这些未成熟的昆虫被大量送往加州——每周大约有2亿只。它们被饲养到成年,然后进行无菌处理。最后,把苍蝇从飞机上释放出来,用一种特殊的方法把它们分散到一个广阔的区域。政府表示,虫害(苍蝇出没的次数)减少了90%以上。)”可知,虫害(苍蝇出没的次数)减少了90%以上,由此可知,该项目很成功。故选A。

【答案】32.C 33.C 34.A 35.D

【答案】36.C 37.B 38.G 39.D 40.A
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了古树寿命长的原因。
36.由上文“The record holders are bristlecone pines (狐尾松) of the western United States, quite a few of which are known to be more than 3,000 years old. One individual, discovered in 2012, is estimated to be more than 5,060 years old, making it the oldest known non-clonal tree in the world! (在我们这个非凡的星球上,一些最古老的生物是树木。纪录保持者是美国西部的狐尾松,其中相当一部分的树龄已经超过3000年。2012年发现的一棵树估计有5060多岁,是世界上已知最古老的非克隆树!)”和后文“but also about being a good listener (许多其他树种的个体也已经存在了数千年)”可知,本句要表不是只有狐尾松古老,故C选项“However, bristlecones are certainly not alone in terms of the oldest creatures (然而,就最古老的生物而言,狐尾松肯定不是唯一的)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选C。
37.由下文“Undoubtedly, part of the answer lies in luck. Ancient trees have obviously not submitted to deadly diseases, pests, fires, droughts, windstorms, landslides, or the human axe in the centuries and centuries that they have quietly endured.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I introduced myself and stared to perform what I had been dying for long before.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After I was done, I looked at the audience, thinking how much I loved doing this.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I introduced myself and started to perform what I had been dying for long before. First I felt a bit short of breath due to my nervousness. But I tried to push myself to picture myself as the real actor in the movie, engaging in the role I was playing. Soon, my hands stopped sweating, voice stopped shaking, and my performance sounded as natural as possible. More than once I heard the thundering applause from the audience, which relieved me knowing I was doing a great job. The more I went on, the more confident I became.
After I was done, I looked at the audience, thinking how much I loved doing this. I sensed their appreciation from their faces, satisfaction from their eyes. To my amazement, they all stood up, giving deafening applause, cheering and shouting “Bravo...!” I felt so relieved and content, realizing standing on the stage is not a big deal at all. Actually, the audience are the best supporters and all I have to do is to try my best. Being on the stage has taught me the best lesson ever: just be devoted to what you are doing.
