(2024届陕西省西安市长安区高三上学期第一次联考)Jose Alberto Gutierrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighborhoods at night and seeing deserted books. It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library.
Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Having access to a library of books and being taken away to another world while immersed in a book is a luxury for the kids who visit Gutierrez’s library.
Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a keen reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez, who never let a lack of formal education stop him from reading classics by the likes of Victor Hugo, Mario Vargas Llosa and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Today, his community library, called “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of his home and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to story books can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books!
The Strength of Words library opens every weekend. It is not just school-going children who are enjoying the benefits of The Strength of Words library. Adults are also welcome to expand their horizons and develop new skills to build a better life for themselves.
Despite having done so much for his community, Gutierrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through bins for reading material and has even travelled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to sell his idea of building library from unwanted books.
24.What inspired Gutierrez to build the community library
A. Famous novelists he liked very much. B. The dilemma he faced on the night shift.
C. Abandoned books he came across at work. D. The hobby he has taken up since childhood.
25.What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3
A. Gutierrez’s mother was a good reader.
B. Gutierrez was greatly influenced by his mother.
C. Gutierrez led a difficult life during his childhood.
D. Gutierrez had a disadvantage of poor education.
26.Which of the following can best describe Gutierrez
A. Responsible and ambitious. B. Humble and thoughtful.
C. Committed and sensitive. D. Creative and courageous.
27.What does Gutierrez’s story tell us
A. A book holds a house of gold. B. Constant dropping wears the stone.
C. Good things come to those who wait. D. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

(湖南省益阳市2023-2024学年高三上学期期末)One night two millennia ago, a Han Dynasty general sent a square-shaped collection of bamboo and cloth into the air above enemy territory in central China. He was trying to measure how much earth his men would need to tunnel through to tear their enemies’ defense line.
It is one of the most famous early stories of kite-flying. Similar devices were later used by other Chinese armies; they launched them after dark in whipping winds in hopes that the noise would scare off enemies, and used them to deliver threats via missives(信函)tied to the kites’ tails.
Today, of course, these delicate aircraft—built from light wood or plastic frames shaped to create lift, covered in a thin material such as paper or silk, and piloted via long strings — are considered as toys. In the 1990s and early 2000s, kite-flying experienced a boom in the American West and parts of Europe, due in part to the popularization of kites surfing. Groups of kiters began to take interest in its lore(知识).
Thus a wave of younger artists have been inspired to pioneer new forms. In Austria, Anna Rubin, often employs ancient methods for her art, including hand-splitting the bamboo for the frames and using hand-pressed natural fibres to cover them. She wants to carry on traditions she fears may be lost by a culture fixated on the future, but she’s equally inspired by the joy of work. “Everyone should, once in their life, make a kite and fly it,” she says.
And in New York, visual artists Jacob Hashimoto, assembles massive installations from dozens of palm-size kites to hang from the ceiling of his studio or gallery. He inherited(继承)his interest in kite-making from his father. “The kite-making is a pan-cultural practice that makes it a beautiful, democratic thing,” he says. “In many ways, it’s a global property—we all own the relationship between us and the sky.”
Their work is a reminder that kites offer us a means to defy gravity. In the hands a willing flier, they give us a way up and out.
28.What was the kite used for in ancient China
A. A tool of warfare. B. A kind of recreation. C. A sign of good luck. D. A way of communication.
29.What are today’s kites like
A. They are lightly structured. B. They are widely used in Europe.
C. They are less popular in China. D. They are considered as a science.
30.What made Anna keep the tradition of kite-making
A. The popularity of kites in Austria. B. Her enthusiasm in Chinese culture.
C. Her father’s encouragement and support. D. Its pleasure and her sense of responsibility.
31.Why does the author mention Anna and Jacob
A. To remind us that kites will lose their cultural value in the future.
B. To tell us some young artists are taking kite-making to new heights.
C. To list some examples of the difficulties promoting kites in the world.
D. To show that only a few people consider kites worthy of preservation.
D
(2024届江西省六校高三上学期第一次联考)The confidence people place in science is frequently based not on what it really is, but on what people would like it to be. When I asked students at the beginning of the year how they would define science, many of them replied that it is an objective way of discovering certainties about the world. But science cannot provide certainties.
But doubt in science is a feature, not a bug. Indeed, the paradox(悖论)is that science, when properly functioning, questions accepted facts and yields both new knowledge and new questions—not certainty. Doubt does not create trust, nor does it help public understanding. So why should people trust a process that seems to require a troublesome state of uncertainty without always providing solid solutions
As a historian of science, I would argue that it’s the responsibility of scientists and historians of science to show that the real power of science lies precisely in what is often perceived as its weakness: its drive to question and challenge a hypothesis(假设). Indeed, the scientific approach requires changing our understanding of the natural world whenever new evidence emerges from either experimentation or observation. Scientific findings are hypotheses that encompass the state of knowledge at a given moment. In the long run, many of them are challenged and even overturned. Doubt might be troubling, but it impels us towards a better understanding; certainties, as reassuring as they may seem, in fact hold back the scientific process.
A more realistic understanding of how science works can contribute to a better comprehension of the decisive role of doubt and skepticism in the scientific process. Indeed, science is not a linear (线性的) path leading from one success to another, but rather a constant reevaluation of hypotheses. Failures are part of the scientific process and should be taught along with successes.
32.What is “doubt” in science according to the text
A. It’s not right. B. It’s a feature. C. It’s a bug. D. It’s less realistic.
33.What does the underlined word “encompass” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Include. B. Oppose. C. Evaluate. D. Discover.
34.What does the author say about certainty
A. It’s a real power of science. B. It shows the weakness of science.
C. It affects the scientific process. D. It helps in discovering the world.
35.What can we learn about science
A. Science is always right. B. Failures are part of science.
C. It’s a path leading to success. D. It is based on people’s expectation.

That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird ” “Of course, you can,” her mother replied. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to go to a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. M: Liz, I’m looking at the timetable here. It seems that there are some choices available.
W: So, what are you going to do on Monday afternoon In the morning we all have the opening lecture.
M: Well, the Careers Lecture might be helpful, but I am interested in the University Tour. So, I’m doing the tour first, then the lecture.
W: Alright. Might learn something interesting. After all, we haven’t seen much of the university yet, and we will be spending four years here.
M: On Tuesday afternoon, there’s a lecture about study skills, but that morning offers another choice.
W: Library Tour or Student Union Induction, what do you think
M: I think the student union is very important, but we can go there any time. Now we should take advantage of the library tour.
W: Ok. Wednesday morning is free, but after lunch there’s a choice between visiting the computer lab and attending a lecture on our legal rights.
M: Well, computers are the basis of everything these days, so I’m going to the computer lab.

M: OK. Thank you. Now I would like to know your feelings about your journey. So what really floated your boat today
W: Well, the Wi-Fi has improved a lot. It makes it easier for me to work even if the room isn’t big enough.
M: That’s the first time today anyone’s mentioned that. It’s good to get some positive feedback on that.
W: Mmm.
M: And, is there anything you weren’t satisfied with
W: Well, normally, the trains run on time and are pretty reliable but today it was 15 minutes late.
M: OK. I’ll put that down. Now I’d also like to ask about the facilities at this station. You’ve probably noticed that. Can you say something
W: I think the best thing is that they’ve improved the amount of information about train times that’s given to passengers—before there was only one board. But now there is an electronic display panel. Every time I walk to the platform, I can clearly and quickly know when my train will come.
M: That’s good. Anything else
W: Let’s see... One thing is that there aren’t enough places to sit down, especially on the platforms.
M: OK—so I’ll put ‘seating’ down. Thanks for your time.

It was the first time that our parents allowed us to come to the family’s New Year’s Eve party and we were very excited. My uncle gave my cousins and me a bottle of wine, and said, “Now enjoy yourselves, but don’t get drunk!” I was frightened and drank my wine very slowly. I secretly believed that I was taking a big risk with my health and maybe with my whole future. I was six years old at the time. My cousins were older, one was seven and the other was ten. Later my cousins had more and more wine. I was afraid I would be looked down upon, so I had to keep up with them, but I didn’t want to destroy myself. I solved this problem by drinking grape juice and pretending it was wine. I tried to act as crazy and out of control as they did. Years later I finally told them the truth. And guess what They had been drinking grape juice, too. Now we no longer drink grape juice at New Year’s Eve parties. But I think we never had more fun than we did at the first New Year’s Eve party.

C 25. B 26. B 27. D
根据第一段中的“It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighborhoods at night and seeing deserted books. It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library. (这件事发生在他晚上开着垃圾车经过富裕社区,看到了被遗弃的书时。这激发了他开始从垃圾中拯救书籍的愿望。在9小时的轮班后,他每天早上带回家50到60本书。最后,他把自己的藏书变成了一个社区图书馆)”可知,Gutierrez在工作中偶然发现的废弃书籍启发了他创建社区图书馆,故选C项。
25.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a keen reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez, who never let a lack of formal education stop him from reading classic s by the likes of Victor Hugo, Mario Vargas Llosa and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.(Gutierrez出身贫寒,他的家庭负担不起他小学以后的教育费用。然而,他的母亲是一个热心的读者,每天晚上读故事给他听。她对书籍的热爱给Gutierrez留下了深刻的印象,他从不让缺乏正规教育阻止他阅读维克多·雨果、马里奥·巴尔加斯·略萨和加布里埃尔·加西亚·马尔克斯等人的经典作品)”可知,本段主要讲述了Gutierrez的母亲对书籍的热爱给Gutierrez带来得巨大影响,故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据第二段“Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Having access to a library of books and being taken away to another world while immersed in a book is a luxury for the kids who visit Gutierrez’s library.(哥伦比亚首都波哥大拥有1300万居民和19个公共图书馆。
通读全文,尤其根据第一段中的“It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library. (这激发了他开始从垃圾中拯救书籍的愿望。在9小时的轮班后,他每天早上带回家50到60本书。最后,他把自己的藏书变成了一个社区图书馆)”可知,本文讲述了Gutierrez将废弃书籍收集起来,创建社区图书馆,为低收入家庭提供阅读机会的故事。所以D项“变废为宝”最契合文章主题,故选D项。

A 9. A 10. D 11. B
根据第二段中“Similar devices were later used by other Chinese armies; they launched them after dark in whipping winds in hopes that the noise would scare off enemies, and used them to deliver threats via missives (信函) tied to the kites’ tails.(类似的装置后来被其他中国军队使用;他们在天黑后冒着大风放风筝,希望声音能吓跑敌人,并把它们绑在风筝的尾巴上,通过它们来传递威胁)”可知,在中国古代风筝是战争工具,故选A项。
根据第三段中“Today, of course, these delicate aircraft — built from light wood or plastic frames shaped to create lift, covered in a thin material such as paper or silk, and piloted via long strings — are considered as toys.(当然,今天,这些精致的飞行器——由轻质木材或塑料框架制成,可以产生升力,覆盖着薄材料,如纸或丝绸,并通过长绳操控——被认为是玩具)”可知,现在的风筝制作材料得到改良,结构轻盈,故选A项。
根据第四段中“She wants to carry on traditions she fears may be lost by a culture fixated on the future, but she’s equally inspired by the joy of work.(她担心我们着眼于未来的文化可能会让这一传统消失,她想要延续传统,但工作的乐趣同样激励着她)”可推知,安娜想要延续传统,这体现了一种责任,同时,她从制作风筝中找到了乐趣。
根据第四段中“Thus a wave of younger artists have been inspired to pioneer new forms. In Austria, Anna Rubin, often employs ancient methods for her art, including hand-splitting the bamboo for the frames and using hand-pressed natural fibres to cover them.(因此,一批年轻的艺术家受到启发,开创了新的艺术形式。在奥地利,安娜·鲁宾经常采用古老的方法进行艺术创作,包括手工劈开竹子制作框架,并用手工压制的天然纤维覆盖框架)”和第五段中“And in New York, visual artists Jacob Hashimoto, assembles massive installations from dozens of palm-size kites to hang from the ceiling of his studio or gallery.
B 33. A 34. C 35. B
根据第二段第一句话“But doubt in science is a feature, not a bug.(但科学上的怀疑是一个特征,而不是一个错误)”可知,科学质疑是特征而非错误,故选B项。
根据划线单词下文“In the long run, many of them are challenged and even overturned. Doubt might be troubling, but it impels us towards a better understanding; certainties, as reassuring as they may seem, in fact hold back the scientific process.(从长远来看,其中许多都受到挑战甚至被推翻。怀疑可能会令人不安,但它促使我们更好地理解;确定性虽然看起来令人安心,但实际上却阻碍了科学进程)”可知,怀疑,假设促进科学的发展,这说明假设是科学的一部分,结合划线单词所在句子“Scientific findings are hypotheses that encompass the state of knowledge at a given moment.(科学发现是encompass特定时刻知识状态的假设)”可推知,科学发现包含特定时刻知识的假设,encompass是“包含,包括”的意思。与A项“Include(包括)”意思一样,故选A。
根据第三段最后一句话 “certainties, as reassuring as they may seem, in fact hold back the scientific process(确定性虽然看起来令人安心,但实际上却阻碍了科学进程)” 可知,“确定性”虽然看起来很令人放心,但实际上影响了科学发展的进程,故选C项。
根据文章最后一句话“Failures are part of the scientific process and should be taught along with successes.(失败是科学过程的一部分,应该与成功一起被教授)” 可知,失败也是科学进程的一部分,应该和成功一起被传授,故选B项。

(2024届广东省高三上学期适应性考试英语模拟)Dora is a seven-year-old girl. One day, when she visited her friend Alice, she saw a beautiful bird in a cage on the balcony of the house. Alice told her it was her new pet. “How beautiful it is!” Dora said. “I also want to have such a bird as my pet.”
That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird ” “Of course, you can,” her mother replied. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to go to a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room. In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” her mother said. “Thank you, Mom. I love it so much!” Dora shouted excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day. Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later, Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to stay at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her!
Dora watched her bird in silence. She found her bird kept looking out of the window. In the trees outside, many birds were playing gladly. She thought that perhaps her bird didn’t like being kept in the cage at all, just as she hoped to stay with her friends. Before she got sick, she didn’t think a lot about her bird. Now, Dora realized she shouldn’t selfishly take away its freedom for her own enjoyment.
When her mother came inside, Dora told her mother about her decision. She said, “Mom, can you set my bird free ” Her mother was surprised and asked why. “I’m sure it also wants friends,” Dora said. Her mother agreed. She opened the cage and the bird cheerfully flew out of the window. A few days later, Dora could play with her friends again. How excited she was! And when she looked out at the birds in the trees, she knew her bird must be very happy at that moment.
