v. 1) ease /alleviate/ the pain/stress/burden 减轻/缓解 痛苦/压力/负担
2) (使)小心缓慢地移动
She eased her injured foot into her shoe. 她小心翼翼地把受伤的脚伸进鞋里。
3) ease (sb./oneself) into (使某人)熟悉 (新工作等)
After she gave birth to a baby girl, she eased herself back into work.
swallow
v. 1) 吞下;咽下
He put a grape into his mouth and swallowed it whole.
2) ~ sb/sth (up)
I watched her walk down the road until she was swallowed by the darkness. 吞没,淹没
Most of my salary gets swallowed (up) by the rent and bills. 用尽,耗尽,花光(钱等)
3) 不流露;掩饰;抑制
I swallowed my pride and asked someone at the stop for help. 放下架子/自尊

slip
v. 1) ~ (over) 滑倒;滑落
She slipped over on the ice and broke her leg.
2) [v + adv./prep.] 悄悄疾行;溜
She slipped out of /into the house before the others were awake.
(figurative) She knew that time was slipping away. 飞逝
3) He slipped the book into his bag. 迅速放置,悄悄塞,偷偷放
slip your shoes on/off 穿上,脱下
[v + adv./prep.] 陷入,进入(困难或不愉快的处境)
slip into a coma 陷入昏迷状态
slip one’s mind The reason for my visit had obviously slipped his mind. 被遗忘

4. delay syn. postpone/put off

5. drown n. drowning
v. 1)(使)淹死,溺死
40 people drowned /were drowned after their boat capsized during a storm.
He attempted to rescue the drowning man. 溺水的男人
Maybe we would soon be drowned in the mountain of rubbish. 淹没在堆积成山的垃圾中
Challenger’s reply was drowned out by the mocking students. 压过,盖过 (声音等)
drown one’s fears/loneliness/sorrows/sadness in... 借酒壮胆 / 解寂寞 / 浇愁
panic
n. 惊恐,恐慌;人心惶惶的局面,惶恐不安
People fled in panic as the fire took hold. 火势起来时,人们惊慌逃出。
There's no point getting into a panic about the exams. 对考试惊惶失措是没有用的。
be in a state of panic 惊恐万状
v. pt./pp/ (使)惊慌,惊慌失措 pt. panicked pp. panicked adj. panicky
I panicked (panic) when I saw smoke coming out of the engine.
“Do you believe me now ” Challenger roared triumphantly at the panicking/panicky (panic) crowd.

choke
v. 1)(使)窒息,哽噎 (Sb.) choke on sth. (Sth.) choke sb.
The thick fumes choked me. 浓烟呛得我喘不过起来。
She almost choked to death in the thick fumes. 她几乎被浓烟呛死。
2) ~ (with sth)(尤指感情激动而)说不出话来,使哽咽
His voice was choking with rage. 他气得声音哽咽。
‘I can't bear it,’ he said in a choked voice. 声音哽咽地说道

The roads are choked with traffic. 阻塞,塞满,堵塞(通道、空间等)
choke back tears/anger/sobs 强忍住 眼泪 / 愤怒 / 哭泣
desperate adj.
1)(因绝望而)不惜冒险的,不顾一切的,拼命的;绝望的,孤注一掷的,铤而走险的
She clung to the edge in a desperate attempt /desperately(拼命)to save herself.
Doctors made one last desperate attempt to save the boy’s life. 做了最后一搏
The children are in desperate/urgent need of (亟需)love and attention.
2) be ~ (for sth) | be ~ (to do sth) 非常需要;极想;渴望
他当时太想找份工作了,什么事都愿意干。
He was so desperate for a job/ was desperate to get a job/desperately wanted a job that he would have done anything.
3) (of a situation 情况) 极严重的;极危险的;很危急的
They face a desperate shortage of (严重短缺) clean water.
adv. desperately
She looked desperately (desperate) around for something to eat.
desperately ill/unhappy/lonely 病得厉害;极为不快;极其孤独
tight v. tighten
keep a tight hold of/ keep a tight grip on her arm 紧紧抓住
The airport security was tight. 严密的;严格的;严厉的
A tight budget a tight schedule 紧的;拮据的;不宽裕的
Her throat felt tight, just looking at her baby. 她喉咙哽咽得说不出话来
The driver slowed down at a tight bend in the road. (弯道、拐角)急转的,陡的
a tight/close race 势均力敌的;不相上下的;旗鼓相当的
He's very tight/mean with his money. 小气的;吝啬的;不大方的
in a tight spot/corner 困境;险境
adv. The baby lay on his back with his eyes closed tight. 那个婴儿仰面躺着,两眼紧闭。
His fists were clenched tight. 紧握双拳。
We sat tight and waited to be rescued. 我们守在原地,等待救援。 Goodnight, sleep tight! 晚安,睡个好觉!
10. justify justifies, justifying, justified, justified
1) 证明…正确(或正当、有理)
How can they justify paying (pay) such huge salaries
2) ~ sth/yourself (to sb) 对…作出解释;为…辩解(或辩护)
How can we justify spending (spend) so much money on dinner
11. collapse
v. 1) The roof collapsed under the weight of snow. 倒塌,坍塌
He collapsed following a vigorous exercise session at the gym. 倒下,昏倒,晕倒
2)(因精疲力竭而)突然坐下(或倒下)
She collapsed on the sofa, gasping with relief.
3) 突然失败;崩溃;瓦解 = break down
Talks between two sides collapsed.
4)(突然)降价,贬值;暴跌
Share prices collapsed after news of poor trading figures.
n. 1) 突然失败,倒闭,崩溃
The peace talks were on the verge/brink of collapse. 和平谈判濒于破裂。

The walls were strengthened to protect them from collapse.
