Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. First period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period — biology. Our teacher's name is peau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.” She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps (沼泽).”
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr.V.,my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook. I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.
24.What did the author mainly write about in this passage
A.Her new teachers. B.Her plan for the new year.
C.Her first day of senior high. D.Her schedule for Wednesday.
25.What should students do when peau says "alligator"
A.Sit still. B.Stop talking.
C.Listen to the teacher. D.Look at the blackboard.
26.How did the author find her first two classes
A.Unattractive. B.Informative . C.Very tiring. D.Pretty easy.
27.Why did the author feel scared during the third period
A.Because she couldn't focus on her work.
B.Because she found the class demanding.
C.Because she didn't like the teacher.
D.Because she did poorly at school.

Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday.
While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children's lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading.
According to the report's key findings, “the proportion (比例) who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13 year olds and 9 percent of 17 year olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.”
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2-8, remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel(建议) parents looking for data about the effect of e readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time.
The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.
As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近) ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.
28.What is the Common Sense Media report probably about
A.Children's reading habits. B.Quality of children's books.
C.Children's after class activities. D.Parent child relationships.
29.Where can you find the data that best supports “children are reading a lot less for fun”?
A.In Paragraph 2. B.In Paragraph 3.
C.In Paragraph 4. D.In Paragraph 5.
30.Why do many parents limit electronic reading
A.E books are of poor quality. B.It could be a waste of time.
C.It may harm children's health. D.E readers are expensive.
31.How should parents encourage their children to read more
A.Act as role models for them. B.Ask them to write book reports.
C.Set up reading groups for them. D.Talk with their reading class teachers.

When Jason Esterhuizen was 23 in 2011, an accident blinded him. Now, nine years later, special glasses and a device (装置) inside his brain are allowing him to make out some details of the world around him.
In 2018, Jason moved from South Africa to California to join in a study that offered the possibility of helping him with his sight. Run by University of California and a company called Second Sight, the study aimed to test an unusual medical product called Orion.
There are three important pieces to Orion. One part looks like a pair of glasses holding a camera on the person's head, which also sends wireless signals. The second part is a tiny computer processing the video from the camera —that's where the sight comes from. The third part is a tiny device implanted(植入) directly into the patient's brain, which is new and different about Orion.
For years, Second Sight and other companies have been working on ways to send visual information into the brains of blind people. Most of the efforts have focused on connecting to the retina(视网膜). By sending electrical signals to the retina, some visual information can be sent to the brain. So far Second Sight has given about 350 people retinal implants.
But a retinal implant wasn't possible for Jason. That's why Orion's direct connection to the brain was especially interesting to him. Dr Nader Pouratian, who gave Jason his implant, said, "With the system we're testing now, you don't even need to have eyes for the device to work. Jason is one of the six trying out Orion in the world.
Although Jason still can't see normally, he can tell dark from light. He says he sees little white dots on a black background, like looking up at the stars at night. "Now I can do things that I couldn't do before. It's making my life much easier."
32.What do the underlined words in the first paragraph mean
A.ignore. B.understand. C.recognize . D.prove.
33.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3
A.Where our sight comes from. B.How the product Orion works.
C.How people with glasses see. D.What differences Orion has.
34.Why did Jason agree to test the Orion
A.He was interested in Orion. B.Orion is equipped for free.
C.He wanted to move to America. D.Orion helps him recover some sight.
35.What can we infer from the passage
A.Orion is worn by the patient on the head.
B.Orion has been implanted in 350 people.
C.Orion brings simple sight to the blind.
D.Orion isn't fit for patients without retinas.

Caught in a flood
Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”
“No,” said Dad. “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary.
“We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside.
“Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too. Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do

应用文:
Dear classmates,
As we all know, all the animals play a vital part in keeping the balance of nature. Unfortunately, varieties of wild animals are being over-hunted or dying out.
So it is high time that we should take some measures to protect them. To begin with, we should stop polluting the environment and hunting. Anyone who hunts or kills wildlife should be fined and punished severely. Additionally, we must try our best to help build more nature reserves. At the same time, we should raise our awareness of animal protection, deeply understanding to harm animals is to harm ourselves.
I hope we can live harmoniously and happily with animals. Let's take action now!

If that’s what you think is best,” Mary replied uncertainly. So they went upstairs and waited. Downstairs, water flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water.
Finally, the rain stopped. However, Mary and her family could not leave while the house was still flooded. They listened to the radio and learnt that rescue workers were coming to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. To their relief, rescue workers and volunteers arrived at their house in a boat, helping them get out of the flooded house. Their home had been badly damaged, but they were all happy to be alive. It was joint efforts and selfless love that helped them survive in the disaster.
