Now, on the left of us is the Northern Gate of Rain Flower Terrace scenic spot. Rain Flower Terrace, with the highest altitude of 60 meters, is a commanding height in the south of Nanjing City, and has always been a place for strategists to fight for. In 1927, Chiang Kai-shek betrayed the revolution. Rain Flower Terrace became the main execution ground of his massacre of revolutionaries. According to incomplete statistics, from 1927 to 1949, more than 100,000 Communists and revolutionaries died there.
1 景点概况
After the establishment of People’s Republic of China, in order to memorize the martyrs, the party and government decided to build Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery here. At the moment, Rain Flower Terrace Martyrs Cemetery is not only a base for Nanjing to carry out revolutionary tradition education and patriotic education, but also gradually become a famous scenic spot in Nanjing.
Rain Flower Terrace scenic area consists of Group Sculptures of Martyrs, Memorial Monument, Memorial Pool, Memorial Bridge, Memorial Hall and Pavilion of Loyal Soul along a 1500-metre north-south axis.

Northern Gate
Now we are at the northern gate of the Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery. Please look at these two granite pillars, which are carved with two huge wreaths, expressing the memory of the martyrs. The stone pillar, 117 meters high, symbolizes the October Revolution in Russia on November 7th , 1917, when Lenin established the worker peasant Soviet regime. Chairman Mao once said that the October Revolution brought Marxism to China. From then on, the Communist Party of China started to play an important role in Chinese history.
2 北大门
Group Sculpture
Here we are in front of the Group Sculpture. From 1927 to 1937, this was the very place where the majority of martyrs were killed by Kuomingtang(KMT). Group Sculpture was completed in 1980, which is made up of 179 granite blocks, weighing about 1374 tons. At present, it is the biggest one among the granite sculptures of the same theme in our country. The whole sculpture presents the images of 9 heroes, focusing on their eyes and facial expressions. The nine heroes are worker, peasant, businessman, student, soldiers and so on, representing martyrs of different social status. In the Chinese culture, 9 symbolizes the largest, indicating a great many of heroes were killed here.

Martyrs Monument
Built in 1989, the Martyr Monument stands at the top of Rain Flower Terrace Hill. It is 42.3 meters high, suggesting that Nanjing was liberated on April 23rd, 1949. The large characters “Rain Flower Terrace Martyr Monument” on the front of the monument was inscribed by Deng Xiaoping. Here, the Eternal Fire symbolizes that the spirit of martyr will last forever.

At the moment, you can see the stele gallery inside the walls on both sides. The east wall is engraved with the Manifesto of the Communist Party by Marx and Engels, and the three sources and three components of Marxism by Lenin. The west wall is engraved with Mao Zedong's New Democracy Theory, 144 meters long. It is composed of 180 black granite steles, with 47,043 words. It was written by 36 famous calligraphers including Zhao Puchu, Xiao Xian and Wu Zhongqi.

Memorial Pool
On the left of us is a pool called Lotus Pool, which is also a Reflection Pool. Based on the original topography, the architects has wisely employed the theory of light reflection. Therefore, the reflection of the Martyr Monument, Memorial Hall and the surrounding scenery are presented in the water, making it an attractive sight.
On the southern and northern screen walls of Lotus Pool, the Internationale and National Anthem are carved in five languages, and they are Mongolian, Zhuang, Uyghur, Tibetan and Han.
4 纪念池、纪念桥
Sculptures of Recall
The Sculptures of Recall is on the left front. A soldier holds a gun in his hand while a maiden is on his opposite, with one hand laying on her chest expressing her memory of martyrs. Fifty six Magnolia trees are planted around, indicating our endless gratitude for martyrs.
Memorial Bridge
There is a 103-metre-long Memorial Bridge over Yuhua Lake connecting Memorial Pool and Memorial Hall. You can see patterns of plum blossom engraved on the balustrade. Plum blossom is the city flower of Nanjing and symbolizes the strong will. The bridge is not only a bridge but also a passage to the Memorial Hall surrounded by green trees.

Here we come to the Memorial Hall of Martyrs, which is designed by Mr. Yang Tingbao, a famous architect. This is the last piece designed by him before he died. In the hall, there is granite sculpture named “The Sun and the Moon Shine Together”, which is the emblem of Memorial Hall. The new exhibition is themed by “For the Rise of the Chinese”, the life stories of 170 martyrs are displayed. The five parts include Hall of Preface, Hall of Basic Facts Exhibition, Hall of Glorious Exhibition, Hall of Special Events Exhibition and Hall of Happy Life Exhibition as well.

Siyuan Square
To the south of the Memorial Hall is a basin, where the Siyuan Square is located. It means when we drink the water, we should remember those who dug the well. It reminds us that our current happy life comes from the sacrifice of the martyrs. In 1997, two groups of wall sculptures were added beside the pool. Eight typical scenes of the revolutionary process of Nanjing are presented.

Area of the Pavilion of Loyal Soul
Area of the Pavilion of Loyal Soul is at the southern end of the north-south axis, consisting of the the Pavilion of Loyal Soul, the Loyal Soul Square, Pool of Siyuan, Ode to Loyal Soul Sculptures. The Pavilion of Loyal Soul was built in 1996 and these characters on the horizontal board were inscribed by former General Secretary Jiang Zemin. The construction fund comes from the special donation of 300,000 Party members in Nanjing. If we compare Rain Flower Terrace buildings to a sacred poem, then the Pavilion of Loyal Soul is a perfect full stop to it.

Tomb of the Famous Martyrs
Tomb of the Famous Martyrs is located in the southeast. Seventeen well-known martyrs were buried here, such as Sun Jinchuan, the former secretary of Nanjing Government Party Committee, Cheng Yibin who sacrificed only 4 days before liberation of Nanjing, and so on.

Now, we come to the end of our visit. In front of us is the South Gate. After you go out of the South Gate, the transport is convenient. It takes you only 10 minutes to Nanjing South Railway Station by bus and only half an hour to drive to Lukou Airport.
