Behaviour contracts for teenagers
The conflict between you and your son or daughter is a problem, maybe it’s time you thought about setting up a ‘home rules contract’. This is an idea that’s being used more and more often, especially in families with rebellious teenage children. We interviewed Dr Amy Barker, a psychologist, who is in favour of the idea.
What is a home rules contract
Dr Barker: It’s a formal agreement about the rules of behavior that teenagers 21 (expect) to follow at home. It should state clearly what the rules are, what privileges the teens will get if they obey the rules and what punishments will follow if they don’t. The contract is signed by everyone 22 (involve), just like a legal document.
Who 23 write the contract
Dr Barker: All the adults who have a parental role should be engaged. It’s important that they all agree and stick to the rules themselves. At the same time, the teenagers should also contribute their ideas. 24 they take part in making the rules, they’ll be more likely to follow them. The final contract should be the result of discussion, 25 (respect) everyone’s point of view, and all the people who have signed should get a copy.
What are the advantages of a contract
Dr Barker: It makes it very clear to teens what they are and aren’t allowed 26 (do), and they can see what the consequences of their actions will be. So they learn to control their behaviour. For parents, the contract strengthens their authority and helps them to be fair and reliable.
What areas should be covered in a contract
Dr Barker: That depends. You can’t make rules for everything, so you have to decide what’s most important and 27 the main problems mon topics include the hours 28 teenagers ought to be home, the spending money they receive, the housework they need to do at home and their use of phones or networking sites. For older teens, rules about driving a car may also be important.
Do contracts solve 29
Dr Barker: No, of course not! There will always be conflicts and disagreements 30 people in a family. But a contract that everyone respects can help to keep the peace.

For the first time, scientists have mapped the whole surface of Titan, the largest moon around Saturn. The map confirms existing data showing that Titan has many Earth-like 31 that might be able to support life.
The data was collected by Cassini, a spacecraft operated by the U.S. space agency NASA.The spacecraft studied Saturn and its moons from 2004 to 2017. Astronomers used images and radar measurements from Cassini to create the 32 map of Titan.
The map shows Titan as a mixture of flat plains, hills and mountains, windblown sand areas, valleys and lakes. The mapping operation is 33 in a report published in Nature Astronomy.
Rosaly Lopes led the project. She is a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Lopes told the publication that the many similarities between Earth and Titan make the Saturn moon a great choice for 34 exploration.
“Titan has an atmosphere like Earth's. It has wind; it has rain; it has mountains,” Lopes said.
Titan is the only planet in our solar system besides Earth to have known 35 of liquid on its surface. But Titan's seas and lakes are filled with liquid methane (甲烷) rather than water.
At cold temperatures, methane goes through similar 36 as rain does on Earth. It falls to the surface across the planet to form rivers and lakes and can then evaporate (挥发) to form clouds again.
The map found that nearly two-thirds of Titan's surface is made up of flat plains, Nature reported. About 17 percent is covered in sandy hills 37 by the wind, mostly around the equator.
Unlike Earth, Titan's sand is made up of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. Around 14 percent of the surface is considered hilly or mountainous. Seas and lakes filled with liquid methane cover a(n) 38 1.5 percent of Titan. The liquid exists mainly closer to the planet's poles, while the equatorial areas remain drier.
Rosaly Lopes says organic materials --- those containing carbon --- in Titan's atmosphere are 39 for the growth of living organisms. “Organics are very important for the possibility of lifeon Titan, which many of us think likely would have 40 in the liquid water ocean under Titan's icy crust (硬的表面),”she said.

“Keep staring! I might do a 41 !” That’s the message on a T shirt of mine.
People stare at me all the time so I thought this shirt would be funny. See, I’m a dwarf(侏儒). Most of the time people aren’t trying to be 42 they just haven’t seen many dwarfs like me before. I can 43 that, but I also want to let them know that I see them staring.
I was born with achondroplasia(软骨发育不全症), the most 44 form of dwarfism. Right now, I am almost four feet tall and that’s 45 as tall as I’m going to get.

But everyone faces challenges. You have to face them with a good attitude. So, I have a long barbecue fork to 50 things from shelves and drive a car with the help of pedal 51 . If all else fails, I ask for things. The way I see it, I can do just about 52 that an average size person can do. I’ll never play professional sports, but I have no problem 53 my limits. It may take me longer and it may be harder, but I can still do it.
My shirt shows people the 54 me a kid with a sense of humor. And maybe that’s the trick showing others that I’m just like them. I’m just shorter, but I’m 55 of who I am.

It’s been said of humans that our intelligence distinguishes us from the other animal species. Still, at times we can be slow on the small tricks. Who knew, for example, there’s actually a purpose for that extra shoelace hole in sneakers Yep, that’s right—the extra hole isn’t just there for show. In fact, it has a genius purpose that will make your sneakers a lot more comfortable.
“It’s there to stop blisters from forming,” especially on the back of the heels, says Becker, an outdoor adventurer in his TikTok video. To do what Becker calls a “heel lock,” simply push one end of the shoelace into the extra shoelace hole on the same side, and pull it most of the way through, leaving a small loop (圈,环). Do the same on the other side. Then fit the end of each lace into the opposite loop, pull tight and, finally, tie your laces like you normally would. This loop-based lock will “lock that shoe around that heel …to stop it from moving around” against the back of the shoe. The result: no friction (摩擦), no blisters!
Even celebrity foot surgeon Brad Schaeffer, seemed pleasantly surprised by Becker’s finding. Ordinarily, Dr. Schaeffer ties the top laces in what he refers to as a “typical crisscross (十字形的) manner.” However, after watching the video, he plans to switch to this trick, noting that it works not only by keeping the heel in place but also by fastening the top of the foot. “Friction is the main cause for blisters,” he explains. “And when you can support the foot by cupping the heel and holding the forefoot in place in this way, you can prevent this friction.”
Turns out that extra shoelace hole offers yet another benefit. Some parents are using the heel-lock method to teach their kids how to tie their own shoes. “This is a super-easy way to teach your kids to tie their shoes,” Dr. Barnett said, because it doesn’t involve holding on to loose loops and therefore requires less coordination. “And assuming a good fit, it’s a fine way to tie your shoes for the rest of your life.”
56.What is the primary purpose of the extra shoelace hole in sneakers
A.It allows for quicker and easier shoe removal.
B.It provides additional support to the foot arch.
C.It serves as additional decoration for the shoes.
D.It helps prevent blisters on the back of the heels.
57.How does the “heel lock” method work
A.It tightens the laces around the toes.
B.It secures the shoe around the ankle.
C.It stops the shoe tongue from moving.
D.It helps with the overall fit of the shoe.
58.Which of the following will Dr. Schaeffer probably agree with
A.Friction is not a significant factor in causing blisters.
B.The crisscross method is the most effective way to tie shoes.
C.The “heel lock” method secures both the heel and the top of the foot.
D.Loose loops are essential for teaching kids to tie their shoes effectively.

Earlier studies suggested that fatigue from virtual meetings stems from mental overload, but new research from Aalto University shows that sleepiness during virtual meetings might actually be a result of mental underload and boredom.
“I expected to find that people get stressed in remote meetings. But the result was the opposite —— especially those who were not engaged in their work quickly became drowsy during remote meetings, “says Assistant Professor Niina Nurmi, who led the study.
The researchers measured heart rate variability during virtual meetings and face-to-face meetings, examining different types of fatigue experiences among 44 knowledge workers across nearly 400 meetings. The team at Aalto collaborated with researchers at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, where stress and recovery are studied using heart rate monitors. “We shadowed each subject for two workdays, recording all events with time stamps, to find out the sources of human physiological responses,”Nurmi says.
The study also included a questionnaire to identify people’s general attitude and work engagement. ”The format of a meeting had little effect on people who were highly engaged and enthusiastic about their work. They were able to stay active even during virtual meetings. On the other hand, workers whose work engagement was low and who were not very enthusiastic about their work found virtual meetings very tiring. “
It’s easier to maintain focus in face-to-face meetings than virtual ones, as the latter have limited cognitive cues and sensory input. “Especially when cameras are off, the participant is left under-stimulated and may start to compensate by multitasking,” Nurmi explains. Although an appropriate level of stimulation is generally beneficial for the brain, multitasking during virtual meetings is problematic. Only highly automated tasks, such as walking, can be properly carried out during a virtual meeting.
“Walking and other automated activities can boost your energy levels and help you to concentrate on the meeting. But if you’re trying to focus on two things that require cognitive attention simultaneously, you can’t hear if something important is happening in the meeting. Alternatively, you have to constantly switch between tasks. It’s really taxing for the brain,”Nurmi says.
63.How does Niina Nurmi feel about the result of the research
A.Confused. B.Confident. C.Surprised. D.Optimistic.
64.What does the underlined word “shadowed ”in paragraph 3 mean
A.Observed. B.Interviewed. C.Employed. D.Analyzed.
65.What can be learned from the last two paragraphs
A.Limited sensory input increases stimulation.
B.Turning off cameras boosts task switching.
C.Automated tasks stimulate constant switches.
D.Too little stimulation can cause multitasking.
66.What is the text mainly about
A.How remote meetings differ from face-to-face ones.
B.Why cognitive attention in virtual meetings decreases.
C.What role a person’s personality plays in remote meetings.
D.Where the problem with the present meeting formats lies.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Robots that serve
Robots used to be found only in science fiction. In the 1960s, the animated (动画片的) space-age family the Jetsons had a robotic maid who could do household tasks. In the 2014 movie Big Hero 6, the robot Baymax could diagnose and heal illnesses instantly. 67 In the field of medicine, robot patients help train doctors and nurses by pretending they have a variety of health conditions. Now robots are finding a home in the food service industry.
The globally spread disease and resulting economic crisis have created a lack of restaurant workers. Since restaurants don’t have enough workers, the remaining staff must work harder. 68 Some businesspersons are lending a hand—a robotic hand—in the form of server robots. These robots are not exactly modeled after Rosey, the Jetsons’ robotic household servant, but they are pretty clever and very cute.
Server robots come in several different varieties. Many have a design that looks like a rolling cart. One model named Bella even has a cute cat-like face. Many are fairly short and shaped like R2D2 of Star Wars fame. They are designed to deliver dishes to customers in a restaurant. They are also just the right height for customers to easily reach them. 69 They can not only deliver delicious food to hungry customers, but also get back dirty dishes at the end of the meal.
70 Concerning the price, a server robot costs from a few thousand to several thousand dollars. And in 2021, a restaurant even rented one for as low as US$15 per day. Regarding safety, special sensors on the robots keep them from crashing into customers. Because there aren’t enough restaurant workers, filling positions with these robotic servers is a no-brainer. Don’t be surprised if you see one rolling up to your table soon.
A.Typically, their deliveries have to occur within 30 seconds.
B.Perhaps you’re wondering about issues such as the cost and safety factors.
C.In real life robots function in many manufacturing and household situations.
D.Regardless, customers face longer wait times, fewer menu choices and higher prices.
E.Server robots are planned to be given new functions, such as performing and holding conversations with customers.
F.Restaurant owners are finding server robots ideal for performing repetitive tasks, however many there are.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Is It Bad to Sleep With Wet Hair
If you shower before bed, you’ve probably wondered whether sleeping with damp hair is a problem. Maybe you’ve heard it could make you sick, or that it can damage your hair. What’s the truth
Let’s address the “it can make you sick” myth first. This idea seems to fit into the old bit of folklore that getting yourself chilled and wet will cause you to come down with a cold. However, it was long ago disproved. It’s true that you’re much more likely to catch a common cold during the winter months. But this has to do with viruses.
Another wet-hair rumor is the idea that harmful things will colonize your pillow. Some research has shown that pillows can harbor allergy-causing mircoorganisms. They tend to do well in damp environments. Scientifically, there’s no evidence that people who sleep with wet hair experience more allergy symptoms. But if you wake up with a stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, breathing problems or other allergy symptoms, you should wash your pillow cases in hot water at least once a week.
When it comes to the health of your hair, generally, it’s thought that sleeping with hair wet may damage your hair, leading to breakages and a loss of shine. But it’s worth noting that almost anything you do to your hair - from brushing and blow — drying it to coloring it or exposing it to the sun — can damage it. Using conditioner can help restore it.
There may be some mild risks associated with going to bed with wet hair. But of all the health concerns you could worry about, this one shouldn’t keep you up at night.

M: It’s bad manners and I wonder why she even bothered going to the cinema.

Welcome to today’s discussion on the importance of tooth protection for maintaining ideal oral health. Taking care of your teeth is not just about achieving a bright smile; it’s a crucial aspect of overall well-being. Let’s explore some key strategies for effective tooth protection.
Firstly, regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste is a cornerstone of good oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime, helps remove a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if not properly addressed.
In addition to brushing, integrating dental floss into your daily routine is essential. Dental floss helps clean between teeth, where toothbrush hairs might not reach. This helps prevent the risk of developing tooth decay in those hard-to-reach areas.
Furthermore, being aware of your diet plays a significant role in tooth protection. Limiting the consumption of sugary foods and soft drinks is crucial, as sugar provides a breeding ground for harmful bacteria that erode tooth enamel. Choose a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products to promote strong and healthy teeth.
For individuals involved in sports or physical activities, wearing a mouthguard is a positive measure for tooth protection. Mouthguards act as a cushion, absorbing the impact of blows to the face and preventing dental injuries such as chipped or knocked-out teeth.
Lastly, regular dental check-ups are vital. Dentists can identify early signs of dental issues, allowing for timely intervention and preventing the progression of problems. Professional cleanings and examinations are key components of practical tooth protection.
Questions:
1. How often is it recommended to brush your teeth for effective tooth protection
2. Why is limiting the consumption of sugary foods and soft drinks important for tooth protection
3. What is the significance of regular dental check-ups in tooth protection

I cried every time I attended that class and I didn’t learn it well. At the age of 14, I felt like I wanted to explore the world. And I understood that I needed to equip myself with as many language skills as possible. Therefore, I started learning English properly on my own. At 17, I found an exchange program in New Zealand and participated. Those 6 months opened my eyes to the entire world and I became eagerer to learn languages. In my high school graduation year, I studied German on my own, mainly because I wanted to study at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in Austria. Eventually I entered the university and my German improved. After university, I decided to work in Spain. So I picked up Spanish and fell in love with this language. Over the years, I have never stopped learning new languages As for learning new languages, you’d better first figure out why you should learn the language. Next, set specific plans. Then, start learning and try to find your own learning methods. Finally, improve your language skills using effective tricks.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B,C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
It’s been said of humans that our intelligence distinguishes us from the other animal species.

【答案】63.C 64.A 65.D 66.B
【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要讲述新研究表明虚拟会议期间的困倦的原因实际上可能是精神负荷不足和无聊的结果
63.推理判断题。根据第二段内容““I expected to find that people get stressed in remote meetings. But the result was the opposite —— especially those who were not engaged in their work quickly became drowsy during remote meetings,“says Assistant Professor Niina Nurmi, who led the study.( “我预料到会发现人们在远程会议中感到压力。但结果恰恰相反——尤其是那些没有投入工作的人在远程会议期间很快就会昏昏欲睡,”领导这项研究的助理教授尼娜·努尔米(Niina Nurmi)说。)”可推断,尼娜·努尔米对于研究结果是吃惊的。故选C。
64.词句猜测题。根据下文“recording all events with time stamps, to find out the sources of human physiological responses(用时间戳记录所有事件,以找出人类生理反应的来源)”可推断,“我们”观察个体并记录,为了弄清楚他们的生理反应。划线词与A项“观察”意思相近。故选A。
65.细节理解题 。根据倒数第二段的“Especially when cameras are off, the participant is left under-stimulated and may start to compensate by multitasking(尤其是当摄像头关闭时,参与者受到的刺激不足,可能会开始用多任务处理来弥补。)”可知,太少的刺激会导致多任务处理。故选D。
66.主旨大意题。根据第一段的“Earlier studies suggested that fatigue from virtual meetings stems from mental overload, but new research from Aalto University shows that sleepiness during virtual meetings might actually be a result of mental underload and boredom.(早期的研究表明,虚拟会议带来的疲劳源于精神负荷过重,但阿尔托大学的新研究表明,虚拟会议期间的困倦实际上可能是精神负荷不足和无聊的结果)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要讲述了虚拟会议期间的困倦的原因实际上可能是精神负荷不足和无聊的结果,分析了虚拟会议期间认真注意力降低的原因。故选B。

【答案】67.C 68.D 69.F 70.B

【答案】Sleeping with hair wet brings concerns. It may cause a cold, but the real cause is viruses. It may bring allergy-causing microorganisms to pillows, so people waking with allergy symptoms should often wash pillow cases. It may damage hair, but whatever we do to hair can damage it and conditioner can help restoration. Despite slight risks, these concerns aren’t necessary.

Psychologist tell us that stress is a state of worry caused by the problem in life , such as too much work or study, heavy responsibilities, and quickened pace of life. I think there are lots of things we can do to solve these problems.
As we know, music is the most beautiful language in the world. I think it's helpful to listen to some music when we are under too much pressure. It will make us forget all our problems and recall some good memories. Or we could read some jokes and a burst of laughter helps a lot. Besides, doing sports is another great way to deal with the problems. It's not only good for our health but also our mood. Having worked out, we will feel very tired physically, which helps us to fall fast asleep and have a good sleep. When I failed the last exam in Junior school, stress began to mount. I was in low spirits and couldn't concentrate. Luckily, one weekend, my best friend pulled me to the wood, where we hiked and jogged for the whole morning. Sweating thoroughly, and mountains of load gone, I felt confident about my entrance exam. Last, we can talk about our problems with our teachers or best friends, who may help us to get over it.
In a word, everything depends on our attitude. It is important to stay happy all the time, isn't it The more meaningful things we do, the happier we will be.
