Laurie Horam never thought of himself as a musician. At home, his dad never listened to music, and one of his boarding school teachers labelled him tone-deaf. But last month he started to play the harmonica (口琴) on the streets of Bradford. People clapped, danced and threw coins into his case for the local food bank. Horam caught himself thinking, “How, at the age of 79, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets ”
The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a family gathering, Gavin, his eldest son, said, “You know what, Dad It can’t be coincidental. We must have got our musical abilities from you.” Horam has three sons and they cover a range of instruments. He was surprised. “There can’t be music in me, because I can’t play!” he said.
Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was on his way back from a trip with his family. Gavin stopped at a music shop. He walked out and said, “Here you are. I bought this for you, Dad. It’s a harmonica. I’ll try to show you how to play a bit.”
They went to a session at their local pub. Gavin played the guitar and Horam sat in the corner with his harmonica, trying to make a sound that no one would hear. After six months, he was invited into the group. He discovered a talent for improvisation (即兴表演), responding to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid. “I don’t play by ear. I play by heart.” Actually, Horam says, “My harmonica plays me — how I feel, what I am, and what I’ve been.”
Music has enriched Horam’s life with friendship and made Horam feel “part of something much bigger” than himself. “At a time when the circle of life might be shrinking, mine is expanding,” he says. “Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can do.”
4.Why did Horam play the harmonica on the streets of Bradford
A.To recall the good old days.
B.To beg food from passers-by.
C.To realize his childhood dream.
D.To collect money for charity.
5.What is Gavin’s attitude to his father’s musical ability
A.Positive.
B.Disapproving.
C.Doubtful.
D.Unclear.
6.Which of the following is TRUE about Horam
A.He enjoyed others’ attention when in the pub.
B.His lifespan was extended because of music.
C.His hearing was sharpened by exercising.
D.His feelings were conveyed by playing the harmonica.
7.What does music bring to Horam
A.A lost soul.
B.A comfortable life.
C.A broader circle of life.
D.A new perception of family.

Around 3,500 Americans ingest (摄入) batteries every year. It’s apparently such a repeating issue that even a specific hotline was built in the event of such an emergency.
And while it’s unlikely your wristwatch’s power source will ever be safe to eat, that doesn’t mean all batteries will remain uneatable-in fact, some are being designed with digestion specifically in mind.
A team of researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology recently revealed what isl being called as the world’s first fully rechargeable, eatable battery. As detailed in a paper published with Advanced Materials, the new device has made good use of some eatable materials.
“Eatable electronic devices will have major implications for gastrointestinal tract (胃肠道) monitoring, treatment, as well as rapid food quality monitoring,” reads the paper’s abstract, adding that although recent research proved the feasibility of eatable sensors and circuits, “fully eatable electronic devices and eatable power sources are still required, of which there have been very few examples.”
According to the team’s findings, their proof-of-concept battery was capable of producing 0.65 volts, which is safely low enough for the human body to handle. The ingestible could provide 48 μA of current for 12 minutes, or alternatively, a few microamps (微安) for over an hour. Such a power supply could provide enough energy for small electronics alike to eatable pill-shaped modules and other gastrointestinal procedure alternatives.
In a statement, researcher coordinator Mario Caironi explained that such a product could help power monitors for both human health conditions and food storage. Additionally, given their safety, products with stronger power could be used within children’s toys, where ingestion risk is higher.
In the team’s statement, co-author Ivan Ilic also explained that despite the battery’s relatively low power, its digestibility provides a promising example of a battery that doesn’t use any harmful materials.
8.What is the necessity of developing eatable batteries
A.They help with the food shortage.
B.They can avoid the harm caused by eating batteries.
C.They are useful in some special fields.
D.They have no impact on the environment.
9.Which is the closest in meaning to “feasibility” in Paragraph 4
A.Availability. B.Flexibility. C.Responsibility. D.Possibility.
10.What can we infer from the statements in the last paragraph
A.The application of the battery has a long way to go.
B.The eatable batteries will be widely used in our life.
C.The development of the eatable battery is promising.
D.The eatable batteries will soon be put into production.
11.In which section of a magazine can we read the text
A.News Corner. B.Story Garden. C.Language World. D.Technology Square.
D
In the face of technological change, creativity is often held up as a unique human quality.
Today however, AI applications such as Chat GPT and Midjourney seem to threaten to upend this special status. These new AI models learn from huge database and user feedback, and can produce new contents in the form of text, images, and sounds. As such, jobs focused on delivering contents — writing, creating images, coding, and other jobs — now seem likely to be uniquely affected by AI. The situation seems more concerning when most of these applications are so easy to use that even children with elementary-level skills in their natural language can use them to create contents right now.
This isn’t a necessary threat to people who do creative work, though. Rather than putting many creators out of work, AI allows them to do it with greater speed and efficiency and reduces the time and effort required to come up with new ideas. Of course, humans will still have to devote time to possibly correcting and editing the information AI produces, but, overall, creative projects should be able to move forward more quickly.
But what we can’t ignore is that AI produces contents cheaply and fast. So there’s always a trend that human writers, producers, and creators practice less and less new human intellectual thoughts and gradually rely on AI design totally. In this way there’s a real risk that innovation will slow down over time and thus significantly change the present structure for creative work.
Creativity has always been of great importance to innovation process and hence competitiveness. So, we need to understand the threats and challenges AI brings. And once we understand what is to change and how, we can adopt AI to create greater value and it is quite hopeful that we see further liberation for creativity.
12.Why do new AI models seem to threaten human creativity
A.Because they collect huge information.
B.Because they do creative work.
C.Because they disturb humans judgement.
D.Because they offer easy access.
13.How can AI help people who do creative work
A.By bettering the creating process.
B.By sorting out information into groups.
C.By helping correct creator’s mistakes.
D.By reducing the producing cost.
14.What is the real risk AI may bring
A.AI drives humans out of work.
B.It is hard to discover Al’s mistakes.
C.Humans rely on AI too much.
D.No innovation is in AI’s design.
15.What is the proper title for this text
A.Who Changes the Structure of Creative Work
B.Creativity: Unique Human Quality at Last
C.AI Is Destroying the Field of Creativity
D.Could AI Threaten Human Creativity

A flood can develop slowly, over time or rapidly, as in the case of flash floods which can develop in just a few minutes and without signs of rain.
16 This is the first thing that a person should do. It is unwise to just depend on history to decide whether your area is at risk of flooding.
Create an evacuation plan in case you have to evacuate your home. Pay attention to the safe areas you can go to. Prepare food kits for natural disasters that you can easily take with you if you have to leave your house. 17
If there is a possibility of a flash flood, leave your home and move to higher ground at once. Do not wait for instructions to move. Evacuation may also cause a shortage in the food supply. 18 To survive, one must depend on food storage.
While evacuating, avoid walking through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. 19
Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon (舍弃) the car and move to higher ground, when water is not moving or not more than a few inches deep. 20 If your car is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay in the car. If the water is rising inside the car, move on to the roof (顶部).
A.They don’t know where to look for shelter.
B.You and the car can be swept away quickly.
C.Use a stick to check the ground in front of you.
D.Be aware if the area you’re at is at risk of a flood.
E.There is no telling when another flood may happen.
F.It would help to store food for emergency situations.
G.During these conditions, hunger becomes a very real problem.

We met at the Leeds Grenville SPCA.We were here to find the best fit for our little family of three. In my heart, however, I think I already knew which one was the right cat. Portia, a quiet brown tabby (斑猫), watched us with partially closed eyes, seemingly saying, “Take your time…” and I know it’s going to be me. As I neared her cage, one paw extended. Finally we decided to bring home a cat that day.
After a day or two of settling in, Portia became a sort of small and furry nanny to my kids. She would travel from room to room with us during the day, usually staying closest to my son. She wanted to sit where he sat, look out the windows from which he peered, and make courageous attempts to share whatever he was eating. At night, she would sprawl onto his lap during story time. We nicknamed her “Guardian Kitten” for the way she always wanted to be where he was, watching over him as if he were her own.
One day, I was gathering leaves while my child delighted in disturbing the piles. Portia was dozing on the porch, her cars sometimes shifting toward the sound of our voices. Then suddenly, from down the street, a desperate voice cried, “No! Come back here!” The phrase was repeated and the volume increased as the speaker drew closer. A Golden Retriever ignored his owner and reached my property first. In a split second it leaped over the low fence surrounding the front yard.
The dog rushed toward my son with boundless energy and body language that expressed that it wanted to play. “Puppy!” my son exclaimed, spreading his arms apart in a welcoming gesture. Unlike me, he was not aware that this dog would, at the very least, knock him down with its uncontained enthusiasm. And I wasn’t going to be able to close the space between us in time.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了意大利研究人员开发的世界上第一个可食用的可充电电池。这个电池由可食用材料制成,可以在人体消化系统中使用,为小型电子设备提供能量。
8.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Around 3,500 Americans ingest (摄入) batteries every year. It’s apparently such a repeating issue that even a specific hotline was built in the event of such an emergency.(每年大约有3500名美国人摄入电池。这显然是一个反复出现的问题,甚至在发生这种紧急情况时还专门设立了热线。)”可知,开发可食用电池的必要性是因为人们可以避免吃电池造成的伤害。故选B。
9.词句猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“although recent research proved…(尽管最近的研究证明了……)”以及后文“fully eatable electronic devices and eatable power sources are still required, of which there have been very few examples(完全可食用的电子设备和可食用电源仍然是必需的,这方面的例子很少。)”可知,尽管最近的研究证明了可食用传感器和电路的可能性,但是对其必要性值得商榷。故划线词与D选项“Possibility.(可能性)”为同义词。故选D。
10.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In the team’s statement, co-author Ivan Ilic also explained that despite the battery’s relatively low power, its digestibility provides a promising example of a battery that doesn’t use any harmful materials.(在研究小组的声明中,共同作者Ivan Ilic还解释说,尽管电池的功率相对较低,但其可消化性为不使用任何有害材料的电池提供了一个有希望的例子。)”

A.Who Changes the Structure of Creative Work B.Creativity: Unique Human Quality at Last
C.AI Is Destroying the Field of Creativity D.Could AI Threaten Human Creativity
【答案】12.B 13.A 14.C 15.D

13.细节理解题。根据第三段“This isn’t a necessary threat to people who do creative work, though. Rather than putting many creators out of work, AI allows them to do it with greater speed and efficiency and reduces the time and effort required to come up with new ideas.(不过,对于从事创造性工作的人来说,这并不是一种必要的威胁。人工智能并没有让许多创作者失业,而是让他们以更快的速度和效率完成工作,减少了提出新想法所需的时间和精力)”可知,人工智能通过改进创作过程帮助从事创造性工作的人。故选A。
14.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“So there’s always a trend that human writers, producers, and creators practice less and less new human intellectual thoughts and gradually rely on AI design totally.(所以总有一种趋势,人类作家、制作人和创作者越来越少地实践新的人类智力思想,逐渐完全依赖人工智能设计)”可知,人工智能可能带来的真正风险是人类过于依赖人工智能。故选C。
15.主旨大意题。根据第一段“In the face of technological change, creativity is often held up as a unique human quality.(面对技术变革,创造力往往被认为是人类独有的品质)”以及第二段“Today however, AI applications such as Chat GPT and Midjourney seem to threaten to upend this special status.(然而,今天,像Chat GPT和Midjourney这样的人工智能应用程序似乎有可能颠覆这一特殊地位)”结合文章主要说明了人工智能因为也从事创造性工作从未威胁到了人类的创造力,但同时指出人工智能可能带来的真正风险是人类过于依赖人工智能。可知,D选项“人工智能会威胁人类的创造力吗?”最符合文章标题。故选D。

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
When I was wondering how to protect my son, a scream erupted behind me.

After a while, the owner arrived, out of breath.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
When I was wondering how to protect my son, a scream erupted behind me. It was from Portia. She flew from the porch in a blur of brown and black stripes, landing between the dog and pared to the fully grown dog, Portia was tiny, but her outrage compensated for that. Every hair on her body was raised. Her back was arched and sharp teeth were revealed. She screamed again, claws extended as one paw exploded outward and struck the dog’s nose. She took a step back. Once more she closed the gap, claws ready to slice. The dog was a bit frightened and retreated. Hissing and striking, she successfully drove the Retriever out of the yard.
After a while the owner arrived, out of breath. Seeing my son was safe and sound, he was relieved. A bit embarrassed, he apologized to me earnestly while taking hold of his pet’s collar before returning home. Portia watched with dismissive eyes until they rounded the corner and disappeared. I stroked her with affection and gratitude for her heroic act. She was definitely a good guardian and beyond compare. Also, her certainty toward us and the way she became a part of our family encouraged me to feel as if there was a kind of destiny to this encounter.
