Every book can confirm that reading a good book can take you to a special place where your imagination runs free and everything is possible. To gift the love for books to as many kids as possible, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library gives out free books to young children. According to the US Department of Education, around 30 million American adults are at a low basic literacy level or barely literate. Imagination Library works hard to change this.
Dolly is a country music superstar, songwriter, actress, author, successful business owner, and a philanthropist (慈善家), but above all, she is truly a self-made woman. Dolly was born in a one-room cabin in Pittman Center, Tennessee in the Smoky Mountains. She was one of twelve children and her father worked very hard to care for his family, but never attended school and couldn’t read and write. Dolly has said that her father was the smartest man she ever knew, and he was the inspiration for her book gifting program.
Dolly’s vision for Imagination Library was to get children really excited about books and to foster a love of reading. She wanted to ensure that children could own books no matter what their family incomes were. “Literacy is so important,” said Dolly, “because if you can read, you can self-educate.” These gifts of high-quality, age-appropriate books come directly to the children every month right to their mailboxes.
The program began in 1995 and originally served children in Sevier County, Tennessee where Dolly grew up. It was such an instant success that only five years later, the initiative went national and is now available to children in Canada, the UK, and Australia.
24.Why does the author mention the US Department of Education in paragraph 1
A.To emphasize kids’ lack of interest in literature.
B.To stress the influence of Imagination Library.
C.To present the decreasing literacy rate in the US.
D.To show the current literacy crisis in the US.
25.What inspired Dolly to start the book gifting program
A.Her sufferings in the early life.
B.Her success as a business owner.
C.Her father’s inability to read and write.
D.Her desire to become a philanthropist.
26.Which of the following best describes the impact of Imagination Library program
A.Far-reaching. B.Predictable. C.Short-lived. D.Undefinable.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.Dolly Parton: The Self-Made Philanthropist
B.The Rise of Literacy in the United States
C.The Importance of Reading for Kids’ Education
D.Imagination Library: Gifting Love for Reading

Computers are pretty good at answering questions. Just ask Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant, who can tell you the weather or puters are good at spitting back facts, but haven’t shown the same critical or creative thinking that humans have. That could be changing, at least when it comes to reading, because of advances in AI (artificial intelligence).
Research teams at Microsoft and Chinese tech company Alibaba reached what they described as a milestone (里程碑) earlier this January. Their AI systems outperformed the estimated human score on a reading comprehension test.
The test was developed at Stanford University. It showed that, in at least some situations, computers can beat humans at quickly “reading” hundreds of Wikipedia articles. AI machines could come up with accurate answers to questions about warrior-king Genghis Khan, or the Apollo space program.
The computers, however, also made mistakes that many people wouldn’t have. Microsoft, for instance, failed an easy football question. The computer was asked which member of the Carolina Panthers football team intercepted (拦截) the most passes in the 2015 season. The correct answer was Kurt Coleman, not Josh Norman. Any person who carefully read the Wikipedia passage would have discovered the right answer. However, the computer made a mistake in the word “most” and didn’t understand that seven is bigger than four.
“We’re still a long way from computers being able to read and comprehend general text in the same way that humans can,” Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s head of technology, wrote. He praised the AI system for passing the test, calling it a major achievement by the company’s researchers.
“It strikes me for the kind of problem that they’re solving that it’s not possible to do better than people, because people are defining what’s correct,” Littman said. “The impressive thing here is that they met human performance, not that they’ve exceeded (超越) it.”
28.The research teams described their work as a milestone because ________.
A.their computers showed critical and creative thinking like humans
B.their AI systems beat humans in reading comprehension
C.their AI systems could tell you weather and direction
D.their computers are good at answering questions
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A.Genghis Khan and the Apollo space program.
B.Smart AI machines were answering questions.
C.AI machines did better than humans in reading.
D.Stanford University developed the reading test.
30.What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A.AI still struggles with logical reasoning.
B.Computers often mistake seven for four.
C.Computers seldom make stupid mistakes.
D.The Wikipedia passage was controversial.
31.What does the text mainly tell us
A.A milestone in reading comprehension.
B.Great advance in artificial intelligence.
C.Computers already think critically.
D.AI beats humans in reading test.
D
One overlooked benefit of lab-grown food is that it may help the UK deal with the crisis in housing affordability. As farming is replaced by precision fermentation (发酵) , the significant amount of land currently used for livestock farming(including parts of the green belt) will be freed up for development in places that people actually want to live.
However, we’d take a different lesson from the promise of lab-grown meat. Free-market environmentalism and harnessing the power of innovative technologies — supported by market-based measures like a border-adjusted carbon tax — can successfully tackle the problem of man-made climate change without fundamentally uprooting the way we run society. Saving the planet doesn’t have to cost us the earth.
It is important to acknowledge that certain types of livestock farming may have issues with sustainability and climate change. But it is not true of all farming systems; and the issues that do exist are being dealt with using the latest research into genetics and biotechnology-for example, recent research has shown that certain types of seaweed can reduce methane emissions from cattle to close to zero.
Farmer data also shows that increased sales of milks have not seen a corresponding reduction in dairy sales.
The global food system, consumer choices and climate change are incredibly complex issues, and anyone who proposes simple solutions is almost certainly not in possession of all the relevant facts and data. Livestock are an important part of humanity’s future food needs.
32.Why does lab-grown food help Britain to solve the housing affordability crisis
A.As farming is replaced by precision fermentation, the level of agricultural development is improved.
B.The significant amount of green belts are used for development in places that people actually want to live.
C.Lab-grown food is more environmentally friendly and beneficial to human health.
D.A large amount of land used for livestock farming will be freed up for residence.
33.What lessons have learned from the promise of lab-grown meat
A.Free-market environmentalism can change the way society operates.
B.Adjusting carbon tax can successfully solve the problem of climate change.
C.Adopting the power of innovative technologies is useful for saving the earth.
D.Saving the earth requires changing the way society operates.
34.Which of the following best explains “harnessing” underlined in paragraph 2
A.obtain B.exploit C.inherit D.develop
35.It can be inferred from this passage that .
A.global food issue is so complex that there are no complete research data.
B.sustainability and climate change are common problems in agricultural systems.
C.some kinds of seaweed can make the amount of methane emitted by cattle ineffective.
D.the sales of substitute dairy products increased, and the sales of dairy products decreased accordingly.

Road systems are necessary for public transport. Street network is indeed convenient for humans. 36 . Every week, millions of wild animals die from vehicle collisions (碰撞). Despite the numerous road signs, the increasing number of animal roadkills keeps on increasing each year. Ever since road systems were constructed, animals have been exposed to danger from moving from one place to another. For this reason, wildlife bridges are built to allow wild animals to cross manmade roads safely.
Wildlife crossings are in the form of bridges overpasses and underpass tunnels. 37 .With these safe routes, wild animals won ‘ t have to access the busy roads and highways anymore. They can safely cross over or under these structures to move on to their path.
The first wildlife crossing ever made was in the form of bridges for animals. In the 1950’ s, France constructed several animal bridges to protect both animals and humans from vehicle collisions. 38 . Apart from France, the Netherlands also features 600 overpasses and ecoducts (生态通道) for deer, boars, and badgers. As a matter of fact, the Netherlands takes pride in having the longest wildlife overpass in the world. The Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo stretches 800 meters in lengthy overpassing the massive N525 roadway and nearby rail lines.
39 .There could be a few unintended consequences of the wildlife crossings based on their design. The bridges can increase the spread of invasive species, for example. Predation (捕食) rates could increase as the predators can easily hunt down the prey through the bridges.
However, the importance of ecological crossings cannot be denied. Regardless of the negative impacts, they play a vital role in the preservation and restoration of habitat and species. 40
A.Diseases may also use the crossings to spread,
B.The wildlife bridges can have negative results as well.
C.Europe surely leads the way in terms of wildlife bridges.
D.These structures provide safe passageways for passing animals.
E.These crossings are used by an increasing number of mammals.
F.But roads and highways have done more harm than good to animals.
G.More ecoducts should be built to provide a safe space for the species.

M: Today, we’re reporting something very strange on the south coast. The water in Depesh Lake has turned into pink. Residents of Lawton have been worried, and many have called the police station to report it. The police arrived at the lake but didn’t know what happened to the water. At first, they thought of chemical pollution, but they quickly realized this was no such possibility. Researchers from the Coastal and Marine Science Center have been looking into the issue. So far, they think the color might have to do with a large number of fish that have recently appeared in the lake. Researchers have caught a few of the fish and will be taking them to a lab for testing. Emergency workers are asking people to stay away from the lake, especially not to swim or fish in the water. We will be back tomorrow with more update information. This is the KMLC News. Now, over to Brittany Johnson with the weather report, followed by sports.

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.D
根据第一段中“According to the US Department of Education, around 30 million American adults are at a low basic literacy level or barely literate. Imagination Library works hard to change this. (根据美国教育部的数据,大约有3000万美国成年人的基本识字水平较低或几乎不识字。想象力图书馆努力改变这一点)”可知,此处先提到美国教育部的数据显示很多成年人识字水平有限或没有识字能力,再说明想象力图书馆针对该问题在努力。由此推知,作者提到美国教育部是为了展示美国当前的识字危机,从而反映想象力图书馆项目的价值。故选D项。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“She was one of twelve children and her father worked very hard to care for his family, but never attended school and couldn’t read and write. Dolly has said that her father was the smartest man she ever knew, and he was the inspiration for her book gifting program. (她是12个孩子中的一个,她的父亲非常努力地工作来照顾他的家庭,但从未上过学,也不会读写。Dolly说,她的父亲是她认识的最聪明的人,他是她赠书计划的灵感来源)”可知,她的父亲不识字给了Dolly开始送书活动的灵感。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The program began in 1995 and originally served children in Sevier County, Tennessee where Dolly grew up. It was such an instant success that only five years later, the initiative went national and is now available to children in Canada, the UK, and Australia. (该项目始于1995年,最初服务于Dolly长大的田纳西州塞维尔县的儿童。它迅速获得成功,仅仅五年后,该倡议就在全国推广,并且现在也为加拿大、英国和澳大利亚的儿童提供服务)”可知,这个项目一开始的服务范围较小,后来迅速拓展,还为美国以外国家的儿童提供服务。由此可知,这个项目的影响是深远的。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“To gift the love for books to as many kids as possible, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library gives out free books to young children. (为了把对书籍的热爱送给尽可能多的孩子,Dolly Parton的想象力图书馆向年幼的孩子们免费赠送书籍)”可知,本文主要讲述了Dolly Parton创办想象力图书馆,为儿童提供免费书籍,培养儿童对书籍的热爱,让儿童意识到读书的重要性的故事。因此,D项“想象力图书馆:将爱赠予阅读”可以概括本文主旨,契合Dolly Parton创立该项目的愿景,适合作标题。故选D项。

【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.D

【答案】32.D 33.C 34.B 35.A
根据第一段中“As farming is replaced by precision fermentation (发酵) , the significant amount of land currently used for livestock farming(including parts of the green belt) will be freed up for development in places that people actually want to live.(随着农业被精确发酵所取代,目前用于畜牧业的大量土地(包括部分绿化带)将被腾出来,用于人们真正想要居住的地方的发展。)”
根据第二段“Free-market environmentalism and harnessing the power of innovative technologies — supported by market-based measures like a border-adjusted carbon tax — can successfully tackle the problem of man-made climate change without fundamentally uprooting the way we run society.(自由市场的环保主义和利用创新技术的力量——由边境调整碳税等基于市场的措施支持——可以成功地解决人为气候变化的问题,而不会从根本上根除我们运行社会的方式。)”
根据划线词后半句“— supported by market-based measures like a border-adjusted carbon tax — can successfully tackle the problem of man-made climate change without fundamentally uprooting the way we run society.(——由边境调整碳税等基于市场的措施支持——可以成功地解决人为气候变化的问题,而不会从根本上根除我们运行社会的方式。)”
根据最后一段“The global food system, consumer choices and climate change are incrediblycomplex issues, and anyone who proposes simple solutions is almost certainly not in possession of all the relevant facts and data.(全球食品系统、消费者选择和气候变化都是非常复杂的问题,任何提出简单解决方案的人几乎肯定没有掌握所有相关的事实和数据。)” 故选A。
