How I Turned to Be Optimistic
I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see — the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost — having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
24.How did the author get to know America
A.From her relatives. B.From her mother.
C.From books and pictures. D.From radio.
25.Upon leaving for America the author felt ________.
A.confused B.excited C.worried D.amazed
26.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4
A.She worked as a translator
B.She attended a lot of job interviews
C.She paid telephone bills for her family
D.She helped her family with her English
27.The author believes that ________.
A.her future will be free from troubles
B.it is difficult to learn to become patient
C.there are more good things than bad things
D.good things will happen if one keeps trying programs
C
Yellow is usually the color of happy, joyful emotions. But according to a new study, not all people associate the color with good feelings.
To find out what factors might play a role, researchers tested a new hypothesis (假设): What if people’s physical surroundings affect their feelings about certain colors For example, if someone lived in cold and rainy Finland, would he feel differently about the color yellow from someone who lived near the Sahara Desert
The researchers looked at color-emotion data from an ongoing international survey of 6, 625 people in 55 countries. The survey asked participants to rate 12 colors on how closely they were associated with feelings including joy, pride, fear, and shame.
The researchers paid particular attention to the data for yellow, and analyzed how different factors—including hours of sunshine, hours of daylight, and the amount of rainfall—were associated with the emotions people reported for the color. The two best predictors of how people felt about yellow were the annual amount of rainfall, and how far they lived from the equator (赤道).
Overall, people were more likely to associate yellow with joy when they lived in rainier countries that lay farther from the equator, researchers reported in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. In Egypt, the likelihood (可能性) of yellow being associated with joy was just 5. 7%, whereas in chilly Finland it was 87. 7%. In the United States, with its mild climate and amber (琥珀色的) waves of grain, people’s yellow-joy association levels were between 60% and 70%.
The researchers also checked whether associations changed with the season—whether, for example, people in a certain country liked yellow more in the winter than they did in the summer. They found that opinions about the color remained fairly constant all year round—even when the weather changed, the data on yellow-joy associations were as good as gold.
28.What did the researchers do before the survey
A.They went to Finland. B.They made an assumption.
C.They studied certain colors. D.They analyzed some data.
29.Which of the following affects people’s feelings about yellow
A.The changeable weather. B.The length of daytime.
C.The geographical position. D.The amount of snowfall.
30.How did the researchers carry out the survey
A.By interviewing participants. B.By studying the data collected.
C.By traveling around the world. D.By looking at color combinations.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.Yellow: Associated with Good Feelings
B.Color: An Important Role in Joy
C.Yellow: Connected with Joy Conditionally
D.Color: Associated with Emotions
D
Everyone has “down days”. Maybe it’s because of the bad weather, or the disappointing grades on a difficult test, and some days teenagers just act uninterested in life or school. But these symptoms(症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet with friends to prevent themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. But if a teenager displays symptoms of sadness for more than two lasting weeks, it might point to something serious.
As teenagers develop, they push new boundaries(边界), complain about rules and look for more free rights from their parents. According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted.
Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible(灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that thought they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for an agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school.
The US Department of Education says that parents should respect and support their teen’s choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. For example, even if a parent doesn’t enjoy the music his or her teen listens to, it’s unlikely that the choice of music will prevent that teen from entering a good college, or lead to health problems. However, if that teen is drinking alcohol and driving, parents must get through strict punishments to teach that there are bad results for poor choices that come with increased freedom.
32.Why do teen’s feelings of bad days usually disappear quickly
A.Their teachers help them. B.They take some medicine.
C.Their parents talk with them. D.They change their attention.
33.What does the example in paragraph 3 show
A.Freedom must be given at anytime. B.Teens are mad at being controlled.
C.Teens need both freedom and proper rules. D.Rules must be absolutely strict for teens.
34.What should parents do about their teens’ choices
A.Support their helpful hobbies. B.Tell them which college to attend.
C.Cancel their after-school activities. D.Get them away from singing pop songs.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.How to Be With Growing Teens
B.Causes of Teens’ Sadness
C.Teens’ Worries About Strict Rules
D.The Importance of Making Friends With Teens

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past;about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own ” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week’s suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
续写要求:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

The Safe Walk program is to make sure that students get where they need to go late at night with an officer on duty to safeguard them, whether back from the bar or from a late-night study group. The College Alone program gives students who are working alone at night peace of mind. Once a student calls the office, her position is recorded, as is her time to leave the place and where she is about to go. Students are provided with a number they can call campus safety office 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And 12 college pay phones are also connected to the office — no money needed. Here, we’re trying our best so that your children are safe while they’re attending the university.

A.How to Be With Growing Teens B.Causes of Teens’ Sadness
C.Teens’ Worries About Strict Rules D.The Importance of Making Friends With Teens

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【参考答案】
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past few days, I had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to myself that maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the middle of class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame, “I should have learned to control myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one.
