When I was 10, I was always joked by my fellow Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) mates, including John. Words were like, “Dick is the best player in the CCA! He only knows how to play 'Mary had a Little Lamb' on the trumpet (小号) !”
Once, the moment I left the school, I took out my earpiece, listening to recordings like a broken recorder. I got so concentrated that I didn't see the wall in front and fell on the ground. Luckily for me, a passer-by saw what had happened and immediately called the ambulance. When I woke up in the hospital, however, the nurse told me that I suffered severe leg injuries. I could have stopped practicing but that was not what I wanted. I wanted to practice even in the hospital. “One leg injury would not stop me; it would only make me feel more motivated,” I replied to the nurse.
That was a hard period of my life. If I had not been careless, I would not have this problem. Yet if I haven't gotten myself into this problem, I would not be as motivated and would not have that experience teaching me a life lesson. My parents and my best friend had come to give me emotional support, telling me what had happened during CCA today and advising me on how to become a better player. After day-and-night hard practice, I finally perfected and went back to my CCA.
On the selection day, the conductor praised me and asked how I had improved so much. I explained that it was because of my determination, my family and my friends. The conductor then said that I was a role model and that the whole band should follow my motivation and practice instead of being like John.
This experience made me what I am today. Currently, I am the best player and the head of the secondary school military band.
24.What did the author want to do after hearing the nurse's words
A.Go back to his team. B.Meet his family and friends.
C.Stop practicing and get some rest. D.Continue his practice in the hospital.
25.Why was the author praised by the conductor
A.He performed better than John. B.He got the first prize on the selection day.
C.He was selected the head of the band. D.He didn't give up even with severe injuries.
26.Which word can best describe the author
A.Creative. B.Intelligent. C.Friendly. D.Determined.
27.Which can be the best title for the text
A.A Terrible Accident B.An Unexpected Result
C.An Experience to Shape Myself D.A Desire to Be Better

How much do you love animals Maybe not as much as photographer Joel Sartore. He is traveling the world to take pictures of as many animals as he can find, which allows people to focus on the beauty and uniqueness of each animal.
Sartore is working to take photos of all 20,000 different types of animals living in the world’s zoos, aquariums (水族馆) and wildlife shelters. And he’s already taken nearly 15,000! He hopes his photos will raise awareness of these planet’s most endangered creatures, and that he can document them before they’re gone. “My job is to tell their stories and hope that the world cares in time,” he told The Weather Channel in 2022.
Sartore calls his project the Photo Ark, like the story of Noah’s Ark, in which a large boat is built to save every type of animal in the world from a flood. He founded the Photo Ark in 2006 in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He doesn’t just take his animal photos in the usual zoo environment, however — he puts each animal on a black or white background with studio lights. This helps him photograph their true colors, and lets people see a little mouse as clearly as a big elephant — and look each animal right in the eye. “When people connect to animals through eye contact, we’ve got a real chance at changing human behavior,” Sartore says.
The response has indeed been huge. Sartore has more than 1.6 million followers online and a best-selling series of Photo Ark books. He asks people to buy his books and photos, give money to the Photo Ark, and support zoos, aquariums and wildlife shelters near where they live.

During the Halloween season, many people visit pumpkin (南瓜) fields or carve pumpkins. But paddle (用桨划) a 1,000-pound pumpkin in a race On October 22 in Oregon, paddlers in Halloween clothes did just that.
The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta took place on the lake in Tualatin, a small city outside Portland. Back in 2004, a club called the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers (PGVG) came up with the idea for the event. The PGVG wanted to alter their large pumpkins into boats and paddle them. They asked the city of Tualatin if they could use the lake for a party.
The first year, about 100 people showed up. Now, about 20,000 come to watch the races. “It’s just a good time to finally have some fun with these pumpkins that we’ve spent countless hours all year long trying to grow,” said Jim Sherwood, a champion pumpkin grower, who is one of the Regatta’s founders and organizers.
The PGVG provides pumpkins for the Regatta’s five races. This year, paddlers came from across the country and from as far away as France and Japan. “Surprisingly, it’s on a lot of people’s wish list to paddle a pumpkin,” said Heidi Marx, the event’s director for the city of Tualatin.
Just before the races began, the growers emptied the pumpkins. The paddlers dressed in holiday clothing jumped in, and the first race started.
Gary Kristensen from Happy Valley, Oregon, won the first race. He was dressed as the movie character Mrs. Doubtfire. It was Kristensen’s fourth year winning a pumpkin race. “Once everybody thinks you will win, it starts to give you a little bit of pressure,” he said. “Fortunately, my pumpkin was pretty fast.”
For the less competitive players, the Regatta was all about fun. “The best part is just watching all the families enjoying the day.” Marx, a player, said. People are going to remember it for a long time.”
32.What does the underlined word “alter” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Move. B.Grow. C.Change. D.Hide.

A.His pumpkin boat ran the fastest.
B.He made the biggest pumpkin boat.
C.He sold his pumpkins to the players.

A.He had been expected to win the race.
B.His pumpkin boat was not fast enough.
C.He feared to make mistakes in the race.
D.It was his first time to take part in the race.
35.What is the most important for the less competitive players

Sometimes a stranger can greatly improve our day. A pleasant meeting with a stranger can comfort us when we were in trouble.
Once, I experienced a severe turbulence (气流颠簸) on the flight to Boston. Because of that, I was extremely scared. Anxiety and fear filled my heart. All the people on the flight seemed nervous, except my seatmate, who looked friendly and calm. Then, I turned to the woman next to me and said, “Hey, would you mind chatting with me for a few minutes I’m really nervous.”
“Sure. My name is Sue,” the woman replied, smiling warmly. “What brings you to Boston ” I started to explain that I was on a business trip. Then the plane shook violently, and suddenly I said, “I might need to hold your hand too.” Sue took my hand in both of hers, patted it, and held on tight.
When Sue Pernick took my hand on that scary flight to Boston, I almost wept (哭泣) with comfort. She was so calm and made me less frightened—“Yep, this is a little trouble, but we’ll be on the ground safely soon,” she told me—that I asked her what she did for a living. “I’m a retired P.E. teacher and I coached women’s volleyball,” she said. Immediately, I could see what an awesome coach she must have been.
Sue and I talked-about our families, our vacations, our love of the ocean—until the plane finally landed. Then the businessman sitting on the other side of her, who’d been silent the entire flight, remarked that he’d enjoyed our conversation. “It cleared my fear out,” he said. “I was scared too. I wanted to hold Sue’s hand!” When we said goodbye, I gave Sue a big hug and my e-mail address.

2.C
【原文】W: Do you have a cold or something

6.C 7.A
【原文】M: What time do you usually get up in the morning, Denise
W: Well, I keep pretty strange hours. I go to school from Monday through Wednesday, and I also have a night job three nights a week from Thursday through Saturday.
M: So, you only have one day off per week
W: That’s right. I’m pretty tired, so I usually just sleep and do stuff around the house.

W: Eleven o’clock at night.

【原文】M: Since when did shopping become so complicated

M: No, seriously! I mean, when I was your age, if you wanted to buy apples, you had two choices: red and green. But just look around us: there must be twenty kinds of apples here!
W: Well, we’re in Washington, Dad. Apples are kind of what they grow here.
M: I know. It was just much different when I went to college in Tennessee. I guess you’re lucky to go to school here.

M: Oh, I beg to differ! I live in this house right here, and I park my car right in front of this grassy area where your dog just did his business. It’s a big deal to me.
W: Look, I’m sorry. I’ll just grab a bag from home and come right back and pick it up, OK I promise.
M: Just wait here, all right I’ll get you a bag from inside.

【原文】W: Hey, there. What can I do for you
M: I’m looking for an apartment or a house to rent for my wife and two kids.
W: Very good, sir. In this neighborhood, most of the houses have three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Apartments can range from 2-4 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms.
M: That’s interesting. Why is there so much variety in apartments but not houses
W: All the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 1950s. Back then, they were all considering a particular family size, so they all have a similar style.
M: I see. Well, we are looking for something that is clean and, most importantly, in a safe area. Our budget is about $2500 a month.
W: Well, this neighborhood is very safe, sir, so you’ll have no problems. But $2500 won’t really be able to get you a house or the bigger apartments, I’m afraid.
M: As long as there are two bedrooms, we’ll be fine.
W: Well, I’m seeing about a few places that meet your needs. If you don’t mind waiting until tomorrow afternoon, I can take you to look at them.
M: Great!

【原文】Attention, parents! If your son or daughter signed up for soccer, then please listen up. As you know, there were five age groups planned for this year: 5-6, 7-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14 and up. Unfortunately, we did not have enough kids signed up for the youngest group to make enough teams. I’m a parent of a soccer player myself, so I know how you must feel. The good news is that there are a few parents who are willing to volunteer to run soccer camps on the weekend in a more informal way for the youngest players. You would need to sign some paperwork and arrange your own transportation and appropriate clothing for each weekend, but at least your kids will have the opportunity to play soccer every week. For more information, please contact the soccer coach Steve Wollinsky at 425-7660. You can also add your name to a sign-up sheet that is posted on a wall next to the bathroom. If you do so, please make sure to leave your phone number and email address as well. Thanks for everything.

The Most Touching Thing
After I did badly in my first monthly exam last month, I felt depressed and disappointed. On learning this, my father asked me to have a face-to-face talk with him. First of all, he told me to analyze the causes one by one warm-heartedly instead of scolding me seriously as usual. In addition, he made me feel confident again by pointing out the advantages of me.
From that day on, whenever and wherever I meet difficulties, I always recall my father’s words, so I can overcome them however hard they are.

A few days later, I received an e-mail. “I have to admit that I was just as scared as you were but did not say it.” Sue wrote. “I just held your hand as hard as I could. Thank you for helping me through this very scary situation.” She added that when she told her friends about our conversation, they teased her because they know she loves to talk. I told my friends about Sue too. I explained how kind she was to me, and what I learned: It’s OK to ask for help from a stranger if you need it.
I decided to be a person like Sue. I was a waitress in a restaurant, where many customers were people in the community nearby. Some of them were old people, who lived alone. From then on, I viewed them as my families. When they came for meals, I would provide them with warm greetings and serve them kindly. The customers were grateful for my good service. More and more people came to my restaurant. I thanked Sue for my change.
