Pamela Malhotra has always attached great importance to education. However, life always seemed to “get in the way” every time she tried to finish her bachelor’s degree. The single mom was so devoted to working to support her two children that she repeatedly put her own education goals on hold, giving up her college program on two separate occasions over the years.
When he was just five years old, her son Bonifacio Malhotra noticed her struggling to get her degree, and he made a promise to help her. “I remember I just told my mom… one day, it’s gonna be you and me,” Bonifacio said. “We’re going to gain our degrees at the same time.” Those words proved to be predictable for the mom-and-son duo, who currently walked across the stage at the university to collect their bachelor’s degrees together!
“That promise, he never allowed it to die,” said Pamela. “He continuously confirmed that we’re gonna do this.” Their path to graduation wasn’t easy, but Bonifacio stayed true to his promise and helped his mother along the way. The two hold two associate’s degrees each, so in the fall of 2021 they registered together in bachelor-level online courses. They both found the classes challenging, but Bonifacio stepped up as the cheerleader his mother needed. “Mom, you’ve got to keep it going. I know you want to stop. We must keep going,” Bonifacio recalled. “The main thing was just trying to get everything lined up and stay on top of all the work.”
It took the Malhotras two years to finish their bachelor’s degrees, hers in humanities and Bonifacio’s in public safety administration. Pamela plans to stay at her job as a coordinator, and Bonifacio has accepted a job at university to help other students succeed in college, too.
Pamela said she was incredibly proud of her son’s achievement, and she personally couldn’t have reached her lifelong goal without the support of her family, especially him. “Between my son and my daughter, they were my greatest supporter,” Pamela proudly said.
24.Why Pamela Malhotra couldn’t finish her bachelor’s degree

Towards the end of the 1985 sci-fi classic Back to the Future, the inventor Doc Brown announces “where we’re going, we don’t need roads as the car lifts into the air”. While flying cars aren’t yet filling our skies, many are in development. In October the Chinese XPeng X2 successfully completed the first public test flight of its two-seater flying car in Dubai.
The XPeng X2 lifts vertically off the ground using eight propellers (螺旋桨), without the need for a runway, and is therefore suitable for built-up city areas. The vehicle, designed to carry two passengers, is fully electric and its makers say it can rise through the air at around two meters per second and then reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. The XPeng X2 is equipped with AI automation — it can be set to self-drive. It learns how to avoid traffic, buildings and people. It does not produce any carbon dioxide emissions during flight and is a step forward in the pursuit of urban green transportation. It is suitable for future low-altitude city flights and is perfect for short-distance city journeys such as sightseeing and medical transportation.
Although the test flight lasted just 90 seconds, according to Dr. Liu, chief aviation specialist at Xpeng Aeroht, the technology is close to being ready for public use, but regulations on flying cars are still some way off. Liu believes that people will be able to use flying cars within limited regulated spaces in just five years. This lines up pretty well with the Chinese government’s plan to put flying taxis on the market by 2025. The self-driving function presents further difficulties with regulation and also throws into question public acceptance. Many people are worried about the safety issues around self-driving cars on the ground, let alone vehicles that are flying around above their heads. However, Peng says it is safer for its flying car to be self-driving than to be driven by a human.
There are lots of flying cars in development now around the world and many of them actually fly, like Opener’s “BlackFly”, SkyDriver’s “SD-03’’and Klein Vision’s “AirCar” — which made a successful 35-minute test flight between two cities in Slovakia in 2021.

Researchers at the University of Arizona have been studying the effects of green light therapy on those suffering from migraine (偏头痛). In September, they completed their first clinical study and the results are very encouraging. They found that green light therapy is extremely beneficial to those who suffer from headaches. It not only reduces the intensity of the pain, but it also decreases its frequency by 60 percent, significantly improving patients’ quality of life.
According to the Migraine Research Foundation, migraine is the third most common illness in the world, affecting one billion worldwide, including men, women, and children. Additionally, it is the sixth most disabling illness in the world and more than 90 percent of the sufferers are unable to carry on with their normal activities during their sufferings. And when it is actually treated, medication overuse can lead to episodic (偶尔发生的) migraine turning chronic (慢性的).
According to Science Daily, the recent clinical study included 29 patients who suffer from episodic or chronic migraine. They have tried but failed in several traditional therapies including Botox injections and oral medications. In the study, participants spent two hours at home each day staring at a green-light LED.They did this for ten weeks, reporting the number and intensity of headaches they had.
Dr. Patwardhan, co-author of the study, said that the green light discharged by the LED greatly helps those who do not want to take medicine as well as those who do not respond to medications. “The beauty of this approach is the lack of associated side effects,” Patwardhan explained. But that’s not all. The participants also reported significant improvements in sleep quality and in the ability to perform everyday normal activities such as exercise and work. And none of them reported any side effects.
As the study reveals, green light treatment might be an unprecedented (前所未有的) alternative for migraine sufferers.

Success means different things for different people. Some may equate it with fame, some with wealth and still some with accomplishments. For me, it means 56 (realize ) one’s dreams. Whatever your dreams are, you have a goal there and then devote 57 (you) to it. Dreams bring you hope and happiness. In the process of struggling for it, you cry, sweat, complain or even curse, but the joy of harvesting 58 (make) you forget all the pains and troubles you have gone through. So an old proverb says that the 59 (sweet) fruit is one that has undergone the bitterest experience.
There are several keys 60 success. First of all, your goal must be 61 (practice). It is well known that if you set your goal 62 (extreme) high, you will not attain it. Next, you have to make 63 detailed plan of doing it. You can take some 64 (step) to realize it. Since the process is quite tough, you need to be diligent, patient and persevering. Faced with some difficulties or frustrations, 65 you may meet with in the process, don’t lose heart. You should repeat over and over that there is nothing you can’t overcome. With this will and determination, success is sure to wait for you at the end of the tunnel!

My Dad’s Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony. When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent, she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation attentively like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in again of barley Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them,” he said to Mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us, “Do not touch Daddy’s flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

The Beatles quickly became the world’s best-known pop music group and many people today still regard them as the finest band in the history of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were the authors of most of the songs the group recorded. Harrison also wrote songs, often using ideas from Indian music. The drummer of the group was the famous Ringo Starr and he occasionally sang. For six years the Beatles had hit after hit songs. Twenty-eight of their songs were on the Top Twenty record charts and seventeen of these songs reached number one on the charts. The group also had a successful movie career. The comedies A Hard Day’s Night and Yellow Submarine became very successful movies. People imitated (模仿) their long hairstyles, clothing, and humor. Almost all later pop bands learned from the Beatles. Beatlemania is the word used to describe how strong and loyal the fans were.

根据第一段中“The single mom was so devoted to working to support her two children that she repeatedly put her own education goals on hold, giving up her college program on two separate occasions over the years. (这位单亲妈妈为了抚养两个孩子而全身心地工作,以至于她多次搁置自己的教育目标,在过去的几年里,她曾两次放弃大学课程。)”可知,Pamela Malhotra无法完成学士学位是因为她要全身心地工作来养活两个孩子。故选B项。

(在1985年的科幻经典电影《回到未来》的结尾,发明家布朗博士宣称:“我们要去的地方,我们不需要道路,因为汽车会飞到空中。”)”引用电影《回到未来》中关于飞行汽车的台词“我们要去的地方,我们不需要道路,因为汽车升到空中”;在第一段二、三句“While flying cars aren’t yet filling our skies, many are in development. In October the Chinese XPeng X2 successfully completed the first public test flight of its two-seater flying car in Dubai.(虽然飞行汽车还没有充斥我们的天空,但许多正在开发中。 故选A。
第二段“The XPeng X2 lifts vertically off the ground using eight propellers (螺旋桨), without the need for a runway, and is therefore suitable for built-up city areas. It is suitable for future low-altitude city flights and is perfect for short-distance city journeys such as sightseeing and medical transportation.(XPeng X2使用8个螺旋桨垂直升降,不需要跑道,因此适用于建筑密集的城市地区。

67.A possible version:
Paragraph 1:
One day, my elder sister, who loved Dad very much, had a great idea. She proposed us to pick the best out of the carnations so that dad could appreciate it forever than have to plant it hard. We went to the balcony, hoping to select out the best and most lovely one. While doing so, however, Maria accidentally fell, bruising her knees. What was worse, many flowers were also knocked down, leaving the balcony in a mess and the majority of the flowers out of shape. Despite this, we managed to pick the very flowers we wanted and waited nervously and uneasily for the father’s arrival and his response.
Paragraph 2:
When my dad arrived, he went as usual, straight to the balcony and saw his flowers lying on the floor like dead animals. In no time, he got annoyed and stormed into our room, questioning us in glare who it was that made such a mess of his flowers. Instead of crying, brave Maria held out the flowers and explained what we meant to do and how it ended up this way. She was afraid that dad might punish her, but at the same time she hoped that dad would smile at our warm actions. Deeply touched, dad held the flowers tightly and gently, and immediately gathered us into his arms, saying, “You are my best flowers!”
