I finally climbed into bed at 1:20 in the morning. My friends had helped me celebrate my
31st birthday in the basement apartment, where I lived.
Earlier in the day I had prepared for the unlikely event of a flood. We are about a third of a
mile from the banks of the Ahr River. It had been raining buckets that week and the government
had sent out a flood warning, though not for where I was. Still, I’d placed sandbags on the floor
outside my garden door and put electronics on tables. “Silly bro!” My friends laughed at me for
doing that, but I thought, why take a chance
As I drifted off to sleep, I was awakened by the sound of rushing water, as if I were lying
beside a waterfall. When I got off the bed, I was shocked that cold water was rising fast. In
darkness, I grabbed my cellphone and turned on the flashlight. When I stepped out of the bedroom,
I saw water shooting through the gaps of the door.
I began to panic. I knew I had to get out—fast! In bare feet, I started to make my way to the
only escape: the door that led upstairs to the main floor. Finally I made it to the door and tried
several times to pull it open even just a little bit, but the rushing water shut it again. I looked
around for anything I could use to keep it open. There in the corner was a coat rack(架子). I took
it and, once again, opened the door, throwing the coat rack between the door and the frame to keep
the door from shutting. Finally, I managed to make a gap just wide enough to squeeze(挤)
through and make it into the hallway.
I leaped onto the stairs and ran outside. I stood there in the darkness, wet through. What was
once a lovely street was now a waterscape, with floating ruins instead of people and cars. The
river had drowned the neighbourhood.
24.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 imply
A. Better safe than sorry. B. It never rains but it pours.
C. A lost chance never returns. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
25.What was the author doing when water flooded in
A. Celebrating his birthday. B. Sleeping in the basement.
C. Placing sandbags by the door. D. Playing with electronic devices.
26.Which of the following might be the most difficult for the author during the escape
A. Making his way to the door. B. Finding a coat rack.
C. Keeping the door from shutting. D. Squeezing through the gap.
27.How did the author feel when standing on the street
A. Sad and shocked. B. Annoyed and anxious.
C. Surprised and disappointed. D. Puzzled and awkward.

It was meant to connect us, make us smarter and our lives easier. And it has. But there’s at
least one corner of life where the Internet has made things so much more difficult: gift giving.
Once upon a time, if you were struggling to find a present for a loved one, there were easy
options to fall back on—DVDs, CDs, video games and other physical media. This wasn’t even
that long ago, but now it’s been snatched from our grasp by the Internet which offers us the chance,
at a relatively low cost, to watch, listen to or read whatever we want, whenever we want. With
everything already watched, listened to, or read, buying a present has become near impossible.
Therefore, we all have to work at becoming perfect gift givers, taking all factors into
consideration and searching high and low to seek out the ideal present. If we go the extra mile,
there’s less chance that the person we have in mind has already bought what we’re considering
online.
But as I now consider this exact plan of action, I’m thinking perhaps it’s not all that bad.
Maybe the Internet is delivering us a lesson, firm but fair: the era of half-baked present purchasing
is over and it’s time to go hard or go home.
In this era of immediate satisfaction, if you want to give someone a useful present, you do
have to actually go to the effort of sourcing something nice for them. Perhaps that’s making for a
more rewarding gift experience for all involved. And perhaps it also means fewer gifts that are
given as an excuse and end up being unused.
28. How is the topic of gift giving introduced in Paragraph 1
A. By demonstrating the prospect(前景) of the Internet.
B. By showing the difficulty in using the Internet.
C. By pointing out the shortcoming of the Internet.
D. By arguing about the possible benefits of the Internet.
29.What might be a reason for gift giving being difficult according to Paragraph 2
A. Numerous gift options. B. Relative high cost for presents.
C. Limited offer from digital giants. D. Easy access to the Internet versions.
30.What does the author suggest readers do
A. Purchase satisfactory gifts. B. Try to select a present.
C. Buy fewer gifts as an excuse. D. Make more valuable presents.
31.What might be the author’s attitude towards nowadays gift giving
A. Confused B. Critical C. Neutral D. Acceptable
D
In warming Pacific Northwest, summers are getting hotter and winters less cold, but the
atmospheric patterns that influence the weather aren’t necessarily expected to become stronger or
more frequent by the end of the century, according to a new study from Portland State University.
第 5 页 共 10 页
That means that in an overall warmer climate, models suggest we’ll have the same variety of
atmospheric patterns as we have now, but the weather we experience from them will be warmer
and, in some cases, wetter.
Graham Taylor, a Ph. D. student in PSU’s Earth, Environment and Society program, and Paul
Loikith, associate professor of geography at PSU, applied a novel machine-learning approach to
assess to what degree the range of weather patterns over the Pacific Northwest will change under a
scenario (情景) of future warming using a suite of state-of-the-art climate models.
The study’s aim was to look at whether a warming climate would make certain types of
weather patterns and movements of air that on a large scale can influence whether it’s hotter than
average, colder than average, dry or wet—become more or less frequent or stronger or weaker.
“We get a certain number of patterns that bring us rain, patterns that bring us heat waves and
patterns that are average,” Taylor said. “The range and strength of those patterns isn’t projected to
necessarily change, but they will be within a much warmer climate.”
For example, the study does not show that heat domes, which became part of the public’s
vocabulary after the deadly weather event in June 2021, will become more common or stronger—
it only shows that they will be hotter when they do occur.
“Global warming is making everything warmer,” Loikith said. “Hot summer patterns are
getting hotter, but we’re not seeing a shift towards more hot patterns according to these models.
It’s just more hot weather because everything’s hotter.”
The study also found that the models show an increase in rainfall over the Pacific Northwest
in most seasons except summer in a warmer future.
32. What was the machine-learning approach used for
A. Finding ways to prevent global warming.
B. Creating a relatively cold weather scenario.
C. Exploring the factors leading to warm climate.
D. Knowing about the change of weather patterns.
33. Which can best replace the word “projected” underlined in paragraph 5
A. Expected. B. Adjusted. C. Designed. D. Revised.
34. What statement does Loikith agree with
A. Less rainfall leads to global warming.
B. The weather will be hotter and hotter.
C. More weather patterns will appear soon.
D. Winters will become colder and colder.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Why Are We Experiencing Hotter Weather
B. When Will Global Warming Influence Weather
第 6 页 共 10 页
C. HowWill Weather Patterns Change in the Future
D. What Causes an Increase in Rainfall in Most Seasons

There I was stuck AGAIN. This was the same feeling that overwhelms me every year. But
this year it was different, because if I failed this exam I would not graduate. I sat there, panic
stricken, unable to move. Pressure crushed in on me. What if I could not go to high school Would
Dad and Mum kick me out of their house
I took two deep breaths and looked up. I could see the teacher pacing up and down. The
classroom was dead silent except for the clock. Tick Tock. Tick Tock. I checked the clock for the
third time. Ten minutes left! I clenched (握紧 ) and unclenched my fist in an attempt to calm
myself. Think! I told myself. I knew I could do this. My hand couldn’t help trembling. Then I
scribbled (胡乱写下) the first few words that hit me.
“It isn’t my fault...”
I stared blankly at those words. At the corner of my eye, I could see my teacher walking
towards me. She was checking on our progress! Dread (害怕) built up within me. Then, I glanced
at the four words again. Without any warning, my hand moved to write.
Hair on my arms stood as the teacher leaned in and started to read my work. I peered over to

see my teacher’s expression, praying that my work had not brought in disappointment. To my
astonishment, she displayed a clear satisfaction! That was good, wasn’t it I hurriedly looked
down at my essay.
I skimmed it through. I felt proud. Now, there’s something I was still worried about. I
checked the clock. Two minutes left! I was still writing!
I bit my lip, took a deep breath, and concentrated on writing. I heard the teacher leave.
“There’s one minute left. Please check your work.” the teacher reminded us.

As World Wildlife Day is approaching , I’m calling on all of you to take action to protect wild animals.
Wild animals, the treasure of the planet, are of vital importance to the environmental balance. Thus, preserving them promises great benefits for the harmony shared between humans and the nature. However, many wild animals are in danger of dying out due to humans’ harmful activities. Now it’s high time that we should seek for solutions to protecting them.Firstly, the public should promote the awareness of protecting the wildlife. What’s more, our governments should pass laws to forbid hunting and killing precious animals. As senior students, leaflets about wild animals can be made to call on more people to take part in the protection. In addition, we shouldn’t purchase any product made from the wild animals.
Let’s join hands and take action immediately.

One more word, I said to myself, come on. Just like this, I forced myself to concentrate and willed my hand to scribble whatever popped up on my mind. “Time’s up! Put your pens down. Please hand in your test paper to me in the front.” the teacher announced. I finished! I put down my pen, breathing a sigh of relief, and then I stood up and limped towards the teacher to hand it in—my legs felt like noodles, thanks to the extreme tension.
A week later, the teacher handed the papers back to us. It was the time for truth! I folded my paper and held it tightly in my hands, shilly-shallying about whether to check the result in front of my classmates. Finally I decided I should face my fate bravely and unfolded it. It was an “A”! I could not believe my eyes. How could it be It was the first time in my life that I had got an “A”. I turned to look at my teacher. Our eyes met. She nodded and gave me a big smile! At that point, I made a firm resolution: I’d be more hard-working and more confident, so that I wouldn’t be stuck and panic like this again in high school.

W: Is your room okay
M: Well, it’s certainly big enough. There’s also plenty of space in the bathroom.
W: That’s good.
M: I wish I had a view of the garden of the hotel, though. There’s nothing to see except the cars in the parking garage.
W: You could always change.
M: I guess so, but I can’t be bothered. Anyway, it’s great to have a big, flat-screen TV. There’s also a coffee maker, so I can make coffee whenever I want it. I was a little disappointed that there was nothing — not even a bottle of water — in the refrigerator when I checked in. But I called down and asked them to fill it up, and they did that right away.

W: What kind of foods do you eat
M: I usually get take-out or fast food because I don’t have enough time to cook.
W: I was reading a diet book the other day. It said that if you eat meat and nothing else, you’ll lose weight quickly. One of my friends told me he tried it and lost 20 pounds.
M: That sounds good, but I’m not sure how long I could do that. Well, I think I’m going to try it anyway. Who’s the author
W: I can’t remember. It’s not that popular. When I get home I’ll check and give you a call.

M: I haven’t seen you for a few days. How’s it going
W: Not bad. I’m so busy with the classes I’m taking. How about you
M: I’m okay. My job’s really busy this time of year, too. You know, it’s the sales season now. My boss requires higher sales. What’s new with you
W: Nothing much. I’m on my way to the shopping center. Hey, do you remember Lana She’s over there. She’s always at the shopping center!
M: Who Oh yeah. I remember Lana. She’s the one with the scary-looking dog. I don’t want to hang out with that dog!
W: Ha! You aren’t afraid of that lovely tiny dog, are you Well, I’m sure Rover isn’t there.
M: Actually, I’m headed to the shopping center later, anyway. There’s a huge sale going on. I think they’re open extra late. If I get there before you leave, maybe I’ll see you. I’m not leaving until I have some new shoes!
(Text 10)
M: The summer vacation in New Delhi begins in May 1st every year. Much before it began we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month’s stay at each place.
So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening.
The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest.
We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a.m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation.
