【拓展】 argument作名词，意为“争吵；辩论”。have an argument with sb. 意为“与某人争吵/辩论”。

(1) 本句中whatever作代词，意为“任何；每一”，引导宾语从句，作watches的宾语。

eg：As far as we know, safety comes first whatever you do.
instead意为“代替；反而；却”，作副词用，修饰整个句子作状语。通常位于句尾，如位于句首时常用逗号与后面隔开；
instead of是介宾短语，其意与instead相同，不同之处在于它后面常接宾语。
