There’s a phrase in Australia that is still widely in use today, “you’ve got Buckley’s”. It relates to a man named William Buckley.
Born in Cheshire, England, Buckley had served in the Napoleonic Wars where he was wounded in action, before being accused of receiving stolen goods (a roll of cloth) and sentenced to transportation (流放) for life in 1802. Buckley arrived at Port Phillip Bay with more than 300 soldiers, settlers and prisoners in 1803, aged 23.
However, the settlers failed to settle at Port Phillip Bay and they gave up the site they chose for their settlement. As the settlers prepared to leave for Tasmania, Buckley escaped with 2 other men. But after reaching the other side of Port Phillip Bay the two tired, hungry and frightened men turned back for Sullivan Bay.
Buckley would not give up and he wandered on alone, eating shellfish and fruits for several weeks before he was befriended by the Wathaurong people. Over the next 32 years Buckley lived with the Wathaurong and learnt their language and customs.
When John Batman, a leading member of the Port Phillip Association, arrived with new settlers in 1835, Buckley finally decided to meet them. At first he couldn’t remember his own language or name but managed to identify himself by the letters “WB” on his arm. He tried to work for the settlers and was employed as an interpreter between the settlers and the aborigines (土著人). But he felt he wasn’t trusted by either side. After less than 2 years he left for Hobart where he died after an accident in January 1856.
Buckley’s story has been reinterpreted many times over the years. His name lives on in Australian English with the saying “you’ve got Buckley’s”. It means very little chance—despite the fact that the real Buckley took his impossible chance for freedom and survived.
4. Why did William Buckley leave England
A. He was found guilty. B. He tried to escape war.
C. He was caught stealing. D. He hoped for a better life.
5. What happened to the three prisoners during their escape
A. They suffered many hardships. B. Two of them died of starvation.
C. They met the Wathaurong people. D. Buckley gave up on the other two.
6. What do we know about Buckley’s last years
A. He worked as an interpreter.
B. He earned his living in Hobart.
C. He got on well with Batman’s settlers.
D. He stayed with the Wathaurong people.
7. In which situation will you say “you’ve got Buckley’s”
A. When a person survived a disaster.
B. When a person isn’t trusted by people.
C. When a person tries to do something interesting.
D. When a person wants to take a flight on a stormy night.

In August, Jason M. Allen’s piece “Theatre D’opéra Spatial” — which he created with Al image generator Midjourney — won first place in the emerging artist division’s “digital arts photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. The definition for the category states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of the creative process”.
Allen’s award-winning image has led to debates about what, exactly, it means to be an artist and whether AI can truly make art. “It felt bad for the exact same reason we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics,” one Twitter user wrote. “This is the literal definition of ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” another tweeted.
Yet while Allen didn’t use a paintbrush, there was plenty of work involved, he said. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in elegant dresses and space helmets, in an attempt to mix Victorian-style costuming with space themes. Over time, with many slight changes to his written prompt (提示符), he created 900 different versions of what led to his final image. Then he improved its resolution through Gigapixel AI and finally had the images printed.
Allen is glad the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is attracting so much attention. “Rather than hating on the technology, we need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.
Cal Duran, one of the judges for the competition, said that while Allen’s piece included a mention of AI, he didn’t realize that when judging it. Still, he sticks by his decision to award it first place. “I think the AI technology may give more opportunities to people who may not find themselves artists in the conventional way,” he said.
8. Why has Jason’s work led to debates
A. It was a copy of a photograph.
B. He challenged the older artists.
C. It was created with the help of AI.
D. He broke the rule of the competition.
9. What can best describe Allen’s creating process
A. Cooperative.
B. Energy-consuming.
C. Straightforward.
D. Imagination-lacking.
10. What can we learn about AI from the last paragraph
A. It is a double-edged sword.
B. It attracts conventional artists.
C. It strikes art judges as no surprise.
D. It may open a new world to artists.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. A trend to be AI artists.
B. An AI-generated art contest.
C. Responses to a winning AI artwork.
D. Curiosity about an image generator.
D
In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Wildlife such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.
Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. Take the Cory’s shearwater, an oceangoing sea bird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys. And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics equally unlikely.
Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement”, and until now it has been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals’ movements.
But a team of researchers has done that by attaching small geolocators to more than 150 of the birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds. “We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement’ for migratory birds,” says Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults—but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course.
Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies “exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.”
12. Why does the author mention different migration models in Paragraph 1
A. To give an example. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make a comparison. D. To support an idea.
13. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The opening for learning and practice.
B. The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters.
C. The way Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns.
D. The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements.
14. What does Letizia’s study find about the younger Cory’s shearwaters
A. They lower the speed for exploration. B. They move in a predictable manner.
C. They travel as much as adult birds. D. They look for a course with their parents.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Fixed Tracks: Safer Migration Model
B. Migration Models: Important Ways to Deal With Changes
C. A Combination of Strategies: A Wise Choice for Migration
D. Exploration Refinement: Migration Model With Better Adaptability

It was a happy Tuesday afternoon. After a long day of classes, the students were now hurrying back home. Maaz put an arm around Hamza’s neck. “It’s the first time I scored full marks in the math exam you helped me prepare for,” Maaz added a little giggle. “My mum will be happy, Thank you!”
Hamza and Maaz were close friends ever since they were kids, but they were opposites. While Hamza was very confident, a born genius and a part of all social activities at school, Maaz was more of an introvert. He preferred to stay in his comfort zone and wasn’t very strong academically but was very hardworking.
The next day, Hamza had been sleeping through all classes. Maaz came over and thumped his back, “what’s wrong bro ”
Hamza opened one drowsy eyelid, “I played video games all night, I’m exhausted.” Maaz tugged at his shirt, “You have done the history assignment, right ”
Hamza suddenly sat up and held his head. It had completely escaped his mind. “Maaz, can you let me go through your work I just have to check how long it will take me,” Hamza frowned in worry.
“Sure buddy,” Maaz added as he handed over his assignment and dissolved into the crowd of students rushing for recess.
In history class the next day, Ms Afsheen looked furious. In a voice that wasn’t loud, but echoed through the silent classroom, she said: “Maaz Ali, stand up.”
Ms. Afsheen pursed her lips and glared at him. “Maaz thinks that he is so smart that he will copy Hamza’s entire assignment and the teacher won’t even know, Hamza’s face turned pale.
“Class, today I will tell you the consequences of a student who tries to cheat. Maaz gets a zero on his assignment,” Ms. Afsheen announced.
Maaz stood with his head bowed, glistening tears silently dropping to the floor. Hamza was looking everywhere, but at him. He couldn’t face his friend.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hamza was going through a battle inside him because it was he who had copied Maaz’s work.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. C

Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, “exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei.

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Wildlife such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration. (像鲸鱼和大雁这样的野生动物通过跟随父母学习迁徙路线。其他鸟类,包括小型鸣禽,在它们的遗传密码中获得了迁徙的距离和方向。一些动物利用遗传和文化的结合来指导它们的迁移)”以及第二段第一句“Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. (另一群候鸟并不完全符合这两种模式,研究人员直到最近才开始研究它们是如何找到自己的路的。)”可知,第一段提到不同的动物迁徙模式主要是为了引出下文想要介绍的不同于前面所述的一种迁徙模式。故选B项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段中“Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. (科里海鸥的寿命很长,很少能在九岁之前成功产下幼崽。这为学习和实践发展它们的迁移模式提供了机会)”和“Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement” (研究人员称之为“探索-精炼”)”可知,此处指研究人员称这种模式为“探索-精炼”,第三段中划线的this指代的是科里海鸥形成迁徙模式的方式。A The opening for learning and practice开放的学习和实践;B. The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters科里海鸥独特的生活习性;C. The way Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns科里海鸥形成迁徙模式的方式;D. The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements在这个过程中,科学家们追踪了科里海鸥的活动。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Younger Cory’ s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults—but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course. (年轻的科里海鸥能够和成年海鸥一样快地飞行,但它们没有,这表明年轻的科里海鸥会进行更多的探索,随着它们成熟并确定了自己喜欢的路线,这种探索逐渐消失)”可知,莱蒂齐亚的研究发现小科里海鸥为了探索降低了它们的飞行速度。故选A项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据文章第二段第一句“Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Life can be wonderful, but realistically, it isn’t always so, no matter how hard you try. ____16____. However, it mostly depends on the amount of effort you put in. And what about bad things The mere fact of living means you’ll go through hard times, that you won’t always get what you want, and you’ll need resilience to get through it.
Resilience is the ability to adapt to adversity (逆境) in a positive way. Resilient people are those who can become strengthened by difficult situations. ____17____. Resilience involves, among other things, being able to effectively regulate your emotions. This will allow you to face difficult situations and overcome obstacles.
Another great thing about resilience is that it is not determined by genetics or personality. ____18____. Instead, it develops throughout your life as you interact with your environment.
To maximize your resilience, you need to know which factors influence it, both personal and environmental. That way, you can work on each factor and learn how to adapt to adversity in a positive way.
____19____. Obviously, this doesn’t just occur immediately after an unfortunate event. It’s a gradual process that comes with time and often, the help of a qualified psychologist.
Next, it’s important to be able to see the good side of the situation. In other words, be optimistic — just don’t forget to be realistic. You shouldn’t focus on the negative things and forget about the positive, ____20____.
Lastly, having a sense of humor can help to improve your resilience greatly. Being able to laugh at yourself or the situation is a worthwhile tool that helps you adapt to different obstacles.
A. but nobody is born knowing how to adapt
B. Some good things will happen purely by chance
C. First of all, you have to accept what has happened
D. Firstly, you should keep all external factors in mind

【导语】本篇是说明文。文章主要讲述人的生活并不是一帆风顺的,需要通过提高自己的适应能力来克服遇到的各种障碍,以及提升适应能力的方法。
【16题详解】
本空位于句中,有着承上启下的作用。前文提到“Life can be wonderful, but realistically, it isn’t always so, no matter how hard you try. ”(生活可以是美好的,但实际上,不管你多么努力,它并不总是美好的。),以及空后“However, it mostly depends on the amount of effort you put in. And what about bad things ”(然而,这主要取决于你付出的努力。那不好的事情呢 )可知,转折之后谈到的是糟糕的事情,因此空处应该发生的是好事。B项“Some good things will happen purely by chance”(有些好事的发生纯属偶然)该项符合文意。故选B。
【17题详解】
前文提到“Resilience is the ability to adapt to adversity(逆境)in a positive way. Resilient people are those who can become strengthened by difficult situations. ”(适应力是以积极的方式适应逆境的能力。适应力强的人是那些在困难的情况下变得坚强的人。)以及后文提到“Resilience involves, among other things, being able to effectively regulate your emotions. ”(适应力包括,能够有效地调节你的情绪。)由此判断,适应力强可以带来好处,但这只是好的一个方面,适应能力还包括其他方面,E项“But it’s more than just “seeing the good side of things””(但这不仅仅是“看到事物好的一面”)该项符合文意。故选E。
【18题详解】
前文提到“Another great thing about resilience is that it is not determined by genetics or personality. ”(适应力的另一个优点是它不是由基因或性格决定的。)且后文提到“Instead, it develops throughout your life as you interact with your environment.”(相反,它会随着你与环境的互动而发展。)由此判断,适应力不是由基因决定的,那也就是说,适应力并不是与生俱来的,F项“That is, you’re not born with a limited capacity for resilience”(也就是说,你并不是生来就有有限的适应能力)该项符合文意。故选F。
19题详解】
后文提到“Obviously, this doesn’t just occur immediately after an unfortunate event. It’s a gradual process that comes with time and often, the help of a qualified psychologist.”(显然,这不会在不幸事件发生后立即发生。
前文提到“You shouldn’t focus on the negative things and forget about the positive”(你不应该只关注消极的事情而忘记积极的事情),不能只关注消极的事情忽略积极的事情,并且由其中的shouldn’t以及内容可知,与选项G中的also shouldn’t并列且内容相符,G项“but you also shouldn’t elevate the positive to an impossible level”(但你也不应该把积极的东西提升到不可能的水平)该项符合文意。故选G。

However, facial recognition technology has also started to pose some difficult questions. Experts have been giving ____40____ (warn) about this technology, saying it may not be as good as we think. Moreover, there is growing concern ____42____ we might fall victim to this technology, as there are cases in which hackers have broken into facial recognition systems by using people’s social media photos ____43____ (build) models of their faces.
Scientists and engineers ____44____ (urge) to improve existing technology and make it fail-safe in recent years. Apparently, this will be ____45____ tough task. Whatever happens, we need to make sure that facial recognition technology can be trusted—or we will have to face the consequences.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Hamza was going through a battle inside him because it was he who had copied Maaz’s work. It was he who should have been given a zero, not Maaz. Hamza shivered at the thought of it. Suddenly he overheard Rayyan ask, “Why didn’t you tell the truth to the teacher ” Maaz shushed him, “It’s okay. I’m not selling my friend for some marks. I will study harder next time.” Hamza sat down in shock. Maaz’s words had stirred a realization in him. Was scoring zero marks in an assignment really worth his friendship After all, it was his own fault that he played video games through the night and didn’t do his homework. He knew Maaz really worked hard for the assignment, but Maaz let all his hard work go to waste, only to protect a friend’s dignity.
With new courage filling his heart, Hamza walked to the staffroom in search of Ms Afsheen. He had to confess his mistake. His hands crossed in humility, he owned up to the teacher about everything that had happened. Ms Afsheen nodded her head in approval, “Yes, it’s my fault too. I shouldn’t have blamed Maaz without getting to the bottom of it.” She then appreciated Hamza for taking responsibility for the mistake he made. Ms Afsheen did give Hamza a zero on the assignment. Hamza rushed to the playground looking for Maaz. With tears in his eyes, he apologised to him and told him that he had owned up to the teacher. The best friends embraced each other and, with beaming faces, went to play football before recess could end.
