课时分配本单元主要设计为八个课时,根据学生情况,学生用书 Project 和 Video Time 部分的活动可作为选学内容,安排如下表所示

II. Unit Objectives
1. Through reading the brief history of Western painting, have a good understanding of the history of Western painting art, grasping the characteristics of Western painting works in different historical periods, and through sharing and communicating their appreciation of Western painting styles, thinking about the significance and value of mining out art, so as to enhance the ability of understanding, experiencing and appreciating beauty.
2. Through observation, analysis and practice, students can master the function and usage of the infinitive as predicative.
3. Through listening and speaking, students can understand the creation background and representative works of Chinese ink cartoons, stimulate the interest of Chinese traditional ink painting art, enhance the cultural self-confidence, and learn to grasp the narrative logic and key points of the theme display.
4. Through reading and grasping the stylistic structure and language characteristics of the two practical essays, namely the theme exhibition introduction essay and the exhibition propaganda page, and feeling the unique charm and dissemination value of art, students can independently write a short art exhibition announcement.
5. By watching the video, students can learn about the famous painting "The River Map of the Qingming Festival", and feel its unique historical and artistic value, enhance the sense of pride in the traditional Chinese painting art, and promote the awareness of disseminating the excellent traditional Chinese culture and protecting cultural heritage.

I. Teaching Content
Opening Page + Reading and Thinking
II. Learning Aims
Through this course, students will be able to:
1. By looking at the pictures, get interested in the topic of this unit and think about the artist's intention and motivation.
2. Read to get the main idea of the article, organization and genre style.
3. Effectively use visual tools and relevant learning strategies to recompose and compare text information, and realize deep learning.
4. By reading the text, the author refines and summarizes the history of western painting and the remarkable features of painting works in different periods.
Ⅲ. Teaching ideas
First, the teacher guides the students to look at the unit title and the theme map, and inspires the students to think about the meaning of the sayings, thereby activating the background knowledge of the students, and guiding the students to think about the ideas and connotations conveyed by the artists. In the course of discourse reading, teachers show students famous western paintings in different historical periods, and let students observe these works and express their views. Secondly, students are asked to scan some parts of the text to grasp the main idea, text structure and genre characteristics of the text. Then let the students read the text carefully, combing the detailed information of the text with the flow chart of Activity 2, and understanding the remarkable characteristics of Western painting art in different periods. Preparation for the next class to analyze the main reasons for the development and change of western painting art.
Ⅳ. Teaching Procedures
Activity 1: Discuss the Opening Page.
Look at the title of the unit and the picture on page 1. Then answer the following questions.
●What do you know about the painting School of Athens Do you know who painted it
●What can you see in the painting Who are these people What are they doing
●What does the painting make you think about and how does it make you feel
●Why do you think the painter created this work of art What idea did the painter want to convey
2. Read the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson and answer the following questions from the two angles of view: audience and artist.
●Why do many people enjoy art What can the audience get or benefit from appreciating art
●Why do you think people create art and what do they want to convey to their audience
In your opinion, what is true art
设计说明:本活动主要引导学生讨论开篇页,通过观察主题图和解读名人名言,激活学生相关的背景知识,构建话题词汇,激发学生对本单元话题的兴趣,引导学生思考该主题的两个重要命题:艺术的鉴赏与创作,为后续的单元活动作铺垫。
Activity 2: Talk about some Western paintings before reading .
Before reading , look at some paintings in different periods of art presented by the teacher . Then discuss the following questions and try to put the paintings in the chronological order .
●What do you know about them
● Do you know who painted them
●How do you feel about these paintings
● Which painting do you like best Why
● Which painting came first How do you know
设计说明:让学生观察不同历史时期具有代表性的西方绘画作品,发表自己对于画作的不同看法,然后根据画作的风格特点猜测其创作时期,并尝试排序,目的在于激活学生的已有知识,激发学生的学习兴趣,使他们形成阅读期待,为后续的阅读活动,即梳理西方绘画艺术的发展变化作铺垫。
Activity 3: Read for the text organisation and the main idea .
Read through the title , the first paragraph and the subtitles . Then discuss the following questions .
●What is the passage about
●Who are the target readers of this passage
●Why does the author use subheadings in the passage
●Where can you find this kind of passage
Identify the text structure and write information from the passage into the graphic organiser or draw a timeline to show how the information is organised.
设计说明:让学生快速浏览文本标题、首段和文中的小标题,获取文章的主旨大意,通过画结构图或时间线来展示文本的组织结构,有助于学生了解文本的基本信息,掌握解构文本的方法。
Activity 4: Read the text to finish a flow chart .
Study the flow chart in Activity 2 on page 3 and answer the questions .

Take the paragraph of The Middle Ages as an example . Work out what other information can be included in the chart .

Read the text carefully to fill in the information of the other three periods in the chart individually.

Assignment

Surf the Internet and find several Western paintings you like from different periods of art .
