I. Teaching content
Learning About Language (Build up your vocabulary)
II. Learning Aims
Through this course, students will be able to:
1. Learn and build up a vocabulary of topics around the theme "art".
2. Use effective vocabulary learning strategies to develop topical vocabulary and expressions.
3. Use the target vocabulary accurately to talk about content related to the subject of "art".
III. Teaching ideas
The teacher first leads the students to review the newly learned vocabulary in the reading text. Then, through three different practical activities, students are guided to learn and experience three effective vocabulary learning strategies: word formation, word deconstruction and word mind map. Understand the importance of vocabulary learning strategies. Next, students are asked to use the vocabulary they have learned in specific contexts to accumulate subject-related English expressions. Secondly, the identification of synonyms helps students to consolidate their vocabulary. Finally, the students are asked to rewrite the text based on the vocabulary mind map, make audio, and complete the task-based language activities.
Ⅳ. Teaching Procedures
Activity 1: Review some key words.

2.Complete the passage with the proper forms of the words in the box.
Western painting styles have developed over the centuries . During the Middle Ages , artists focused more on religious themes , and their works were often primitive with characters much larger , but this began to change to a more realistic style in the 13th century . Then , with the introduction of new values and the innovation of using perspective and oil paints , artists of the Renaissance began to adopt a more humanistic painting style and liked to depict people and the world around us as they were , among whom are the most influential painters like Leonardo da Vinci , Raphael , Michelangelo , and Rembrandt .
Next came the style of Impressionism starting from the late 19th century , when painters turned to a more subjective and not detailed way to record scenes of nature or daily life . Such paintings feature color and movement , as was seen in Monet ' s and Renoir ' s works , which vividly conveyed the impression the scenes gave them . Later , with the development of Cubism and abstract art , more Western painting styles emerged , giving art multiple layers of senses .

Activity 2: Explore new words with three word - learning strategies.
1.Observe the differences between the two groups of words. Then use the correct endings to form new words and complete the tables .

2.Analyse the words in the table and guess the meaning of new words.

Create a mind map for each painting style using words and phrases you have learnt from the text in Reading and Thinking section. For instance ," The Renaissance " mind map:
设计说明:这三个活动旨在引导学生掌握拓展和积累词汇的三种词汇学习策略﹣﹣构词法、解构单词和词汇思维导图,有助于培养学生的发散思维和逻辑思维,帮助学生联想记忆词汇。
Activity 3: Complete a passage with the correct forms of the words or phrases.
Read through the words in the box and the passage in Activity 2 on page 4. Then discuss the meanings of new words.
Complete the passage and check the answers.
Read the passage again and discuss the following questions.
●What is the passage about Can you use one sentence to summarise the main idea
●Is there anything about Monet that interests you What is it
●What else do you want to know about Monet
Find out what important points are included in the passage .

设计说明:让学生在理解短文内容的基础上运用所学词汇补全文中缺失的信息,然后找出文本要点和相关短语及表达,目的是训练学生在相对复杂的语境中运用词汇的能力,帮助学生积累和拓展主题词汇,增强语篇意识,拓展印象派绘画知识。
Activity 4: Discuss the differences between words of similar meanings.
Look up each group of words in Activity 3 on page 4 in the dictionary and discuss their different meanings and usages.
Work in groups and create a blank - filling activity.
Exchange your activity with another group and finish the activity.
Check the answers with another group and discuss the sentences with wrong uses of words.
Share the difficult sentences with the class.
设计说明:本活动让学生先通过查阅英英词典,自主学习和辨析五组近义词,关注单词的使用语境,体会它们的用法;再与同学讨论每组近义词之间的区别,解决遗留问题;接着以小组为单位合作设计词汇填空活动;然后小组之间交换所设计的练习题并完成答题;最后两组核对答案并讨论有争议的句子,这一活动一方面旨在帮助学生有效分辨近义词之间的区别,避免在运用它们时产生混淆,造成词汇误用;另一方面旨在训练学生自主学习和合作学习的能力,增强课堂的互动氛围,提高学生词汇学习的兴趣。
Activity 5: Prepare for the sound clip.
Read the text in Reading and Thinking section again. Focus on your favourite painting style and make a mind map using the information from the text.
In pairs discuss and enrich your mind map for the painting style .
Use the information in the mind map to make a new paragraph.
Exchange your paragraph with a partner and revise it.
设计说明:让学生选择自己喜欢的西方绘画艺术风格,制作思维导图,并基于思维导图模仿教材第四页活动2的短文写一个新的语段,并将其制作成音频,目的是训练学生从文本中提取关键词汇和表达的能力,同时培养学生的逻辑思维。这一活动将语言信息之间的联系化为可视化的图表,既便于记忆,又利于灵活运用。
Assignment
Finish all the activities in Using Words and Expressions in the Workbook.
Make a sound clip by reading your paragraph to the recorder.
设计说明:让学生完成练习册的词汇活动,可帮助学生及时巩固新学词汇。让学生完成音频作品的制作,目的是帮助他们巩固本课所学内容,训练他们的口头表达能力,同时教师可以纠正学生的发音问题,提高学生的口语水平。
