English at Airport
In this chapter, you will learn:
how to identify the international arrival board and understand the airport announcement in English;
how to make signboard for receiving guests (group or individual) at the airport;
how to identify your guests and learn to distinguish the travel group service and individual tourist service;
how to make a welcome speech, briefly introduce the itinerary and the relevant arrangements

Situation I —— Background Information
The normal cycle of the service includes:
arrive at the airport 30 minutes prior to the expected arrival time and confirm the exact landing time and place;
contact the porter and inform him of the luggage area;
stand at a highly visible location at the exit, in full view of arriving tourists with a cardboard;
meet the tour group and check the group code, number of tourists and name of the national guide or tour leader;
make sure that all the luggage has been claimed and collected by porter and transferred to the coach;
lead the tour group to the coach and stand by the door to politely greet tourists and confirm the number of tourists;
greet tourists cordially or deliver a welcome speech; give a brief introduction to the local customs, location of the hotel; don’t forget to inform overseas tourists of the local time

H: We have got back the checked bags now. Shall we leave the airport now
R: Yes. Follow me, please. A CITS shuttle bus is waiting for us.
H: It’s very thoughtful of you to make this arrangement.
R: The bus will first take us to the hotel where CITS has reserved rooms for you. The hotel has a restaurant and a snack bar. We’ve already booked four tables for you at the hotel’s restaurant. After a short rest in your rooms, you can have your lunch at the restaurant. I’ll discuss the itinerary for your Beijing tour after lunch. What do you say to that
H: That’s fine. Thank you.

Situation II —— Background Information
In the big cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xi’an etc., private tour assistants1 often work individually. A tour guide can get information of his potential clients through the online media such as http://www./zh and contact the people who need tour guide service in your area. Before meeting your guests at the airport you can email the Foreign Individual Traveler2 to settle the details.
After you meet the guest, usually you should let the guest walk on the right. It is polite for you to open the door for him or her and let them go through the door first. It is offending to call a young lady ‘Madam’, and you should not ask her about her age, salary, and other private matters.
