Unit 6 Visiting Cultural and Historic Scenic Spots (人文景观旅游)
Mr. Oliver, a professor of history from a college in Australia, comes to China to have an investigation of Chinese historic relics. This trip he has three world-famous historic places of interests to visit, which are the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs Scenic Area and the Summer Palace. Wang Yang from China Travel Service is his tour guide.

W: Mr. Oliver, we’re on the way to the Great Wall named Mutianyu.
O: I’m a little excited! Is it very far from Beijing city
W: Oh, about 40 miles to the north of Beijing city pared with the Badaling Great Wall，Mutianyu is less crowded, thus a good destination on hot holidays at ease. On the other hand, the Mutianyu Great Wall has been renovated and equipped with cableway and sideway，which is easy to make a visit. Moreover, the Mutianyu Great Wall is one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall.

O: What a spectacular sight——just like a giant dragon winding its way over the mountains! The surrounding natural scenery is breath-taking!
W: It’s true. Flowers bloom all over the mountains in spring. Grasses dress the hillside green in summer. In winter, the wall is covered by snow, making it more magnificent.
O: What are those towers on the wall spaced at regular distance from one to another？
W: They are beacon-fire towers or watchtowers. In ancient time, it was used for watching and sending smoke signals.

W: Thirteen. So it is call＂the Thirteen Tombs＂.
O: Does each tomb have its own name
W: Yes, each tomb got its name from the emperor who buried there.
O: I feel that the site is full of mystery. The scale is so large that I can’t believe my eyes. Shall we finish visiting during a day
W: Well, Not each part but Changling Tomb, Dinggling Tomb, Zhaolimg Tomb and Scared Way are open to public.
O: So many statues on both sides of the way. Where are we
W: This is the famous Spirit Way, or Sacred Way. Let’s begin our visiting.

O: Well, I have known that the Summer Palace is the largest and most well-preserved royal park in China.
W: Yes, the garden Summer Palace used to be called “the Garden of Clear Ripples”. The natural views and cultural interests of the garden are so great that it influences deeply Chinese horticulture and landscape.
O: Well, How large is the garden？
W: It occupies an area of 300.59 hectares which is mainly made up of Kunming Lake, the Pavilion of the Fragrance of Buddha, Suzhou Street, the Longevity Hill, the Marble Boat, etc.
