Brief Introduction to Gansu Province
Situated in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, Gansu Province covers an total area of 455 000 square kilometers and it has a total population of about 25.58 million in 2010. The province is famous for it’s a long history and rich natural resources. The Silk Road, a chief Eurasian trade route .The Silk Road enhanced both China’s and the western countries’ economy and culture . There’re many beautiful attractions along the Gansu section of the Silk Road, such as Mogao Grottoes, which is esteemed as “a glittering pearl adorns the Silk Road”, and Jiayu Pass, which is acclaimed as “the grandest pass under heaven”.

Being one of the six essential factors of tour activities, shopping is an indispensable part in the whole tour. Moreover, selling commodities is an important section of the tourist incomes for a country or region. ----- Chinese Grottoes
The grotto art deriving from India was introduced to China which has gone through the Southern and Northern Dynasties as well as the Sui, Tang and Song Dynasties. The grottoes made in different dynasties have their unique styles.
The development of Chinese grottoes.
There are three greatest grottoes in China, including Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang in Gansu Province, Yungang Grottoes at Datong in Shanxi Province, and Longmen Grottoes at Luoyang in Henan Province.

Mogao Grottoes ----- Mogao Grottoes are the largest and the most famous
grottoes of Buddhist grotto art in China.
Yungang Grottoes -----Known as one of the three major cave complexes
in China. Yungang Grottoes have a profound
influence on the art development in the Sui and Tang
Dynasties and hold an extremely important position in
the Chinese art history.
Longmen Grottoes ----- Longmen Grottoes are known as one of China’s three
major treasure troves of grotto art.
----- Mogao Grottoes
Situated at the cliffs of the Soughing Sand Hill 25
kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City.
The Grottoes were started in 366AD, the 2nd year
of Jianyuan in the Former Qin State.
Mogao Grottoes are acclaimed as “the World
Gallery”, which were listed as a World Cultural
Heritage by UNESCO in 1987.
----- Yungang Grottoes
Known as one of the three major cave complexes in China, the grottoes started to be built in 460 when Datong was the capital and the political and cultural center in the north.
Yungang Grottoes have a profound influence on the art development in the Sui and Tang Dynasties and hold an extremely important position in the Chinese art history.
----- Longmen Grottoes
Longmen Grottoes are known as one of China’s three major treasure troves of grotto art.
The construction of these caves was started in 493AD when the Northern Wei Court and was completed in the Qing Dynasty, lasting more than 400 years.
The exquisite carvings demonstrate the great intelligence of the ancient Chinese artisans who left us a glorious page in the history of Chinese grotto art.

Mogao Grottoes are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and along with Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China.
Mogao Grottoes started to be built in 366 AD, the 2nd year of Jianyuan in Former Qin State.
Mogao Grottoes became flourishing center of Buddhist culture on the Silk Road at that time.
Mogao Grottoes are not only the largest and the most celebrated Buddhist grottoes in China but also the largest World Treasure House of Art so far in existence in the world. They were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987.
Chinese citizens enjoy the freedom to believe or not believe in religion, and the government does not interfere with their legal religious activities. Religious practices can be carried on in the premises of temples, churches and mosques, which are protected by the Chinese government. Meanwhile, the government also established the Bureau of Religious Affairs to supervise all aspects of religious activities in China.
