Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if you are 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
"The top winners have exhibited boundless curiosity," May a Ajmera president and CEO of Society for Science, said in the press release. "Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future."
Shanya's inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. "I had never really experienced something like that before," she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder's Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. "They had smoke detectors. and yet it still burned down," she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shaya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya's thermal(热的) imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype(原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the programming, "I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through." she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
"Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that's what we need to encourage with all young people," said Ajmera . She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
24. What can we learn about Shanya from the first two paragraphs
A. She gained a lot of money in the award.
B. She showed a curious nature as a schooler.
C. She set a big stage for young people her age.
D. She was junior to other winners in performance.
25. What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system
A. Her desire to win the science award.
B. Her experience of a destructive fire.
C. Her interest in computer programming.
D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
26. What is an advantage of Shanya's invention
A. It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.
B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
27. Which of the following can best describe Shanya
A. Reliable. B. Cooperative. C. Innovative. D. Generous.
C
In the endless sky, the unaided human eye should be able to perceive several thousand stars on a clear, dark night. Unfortunately, growing light pollution has impeded people from the nightly view.
New citizen-science -based research throws alarming light on the problem of "sky glow" -the diffuse illumination(漫射照明) of the night sky that is a form of light pollution. The data came from crowd-sourced observations collected from around the world as part of Globe at Night, a program developed by astronomer Connie Walker.
Light pollution has harmful effects on the practice of astronomy but also on human health and wildlife, since it disturbs the cycle from sunlight to starlight that biological systems have evolved alongside. Furthermore, the loss of visible stars is a great loss of human cultural heritage. Until relatively recently, humans throughout history had an impressive view of the starry night sky, and the effect of this nighty spectacle(壮观) is evident in ancient cultures.
Globe at Night has been gathering data on star visibility since 2006. Anyone can submit observations through the Globe at Night web application. Participants record which one best matches what they can see in the sky without any telescopes or other instruments.
Researchers find that the loss of visible stars indicates an increase in sky brightness of 9.6%per year while roughly 2% is measured by satellites. Existing satellites are not well suited to measuring sky glow as it appears to humans, because they can not detect wavelengths shorter than 500 nanometers(纳米). White LEDs, with shorter wavelengths under 500 nanometers, now are increasingly commonly used in outdoor lighting. But human eyes are more sensitive to these shorter wavelengths at nighttime. Space-based instruments do not measure light from windows, either. But these sources are significant contributors to sky glow us seen from the ground.
"The increase in sky glow over the past decade underlines the importance of redoubling our efforts and developing new strategies to protect dark skies," said Walker. "The Globe at Night dataset is necessary in our ongoing evaluation of changes in sky glow, and we encourage whoever can to get involved to help protect the starry night sky."
28. What does the underlined word "impeded" in the first paragraph mean
A. separated. B. disabled. C. demanded. D. protected.
29. What does the loss of visible stars lead to
A. Poorer human health.
B. Fewer wildlife species.
C. More delicate biological systems.
D. Less nightly culture elements of the sky.
30. What does the author stress in paragraph 5
A. Crowd sourced data are invaluable.
B. Shorter wavelengths are hard to detect.
C. Satellites play a vital role.
D. White LEDs are widely used.
31. What can be inferred from Walker's words
A. Their consistent efforts pay off.
B. The dataset needs to be updated.
C. The sky glow has been over-emphasized.
D. More participants are expected to join in.

"Woman reading book, under a night sky, dreamy atmosphere," I type into Deep Dream Generator's Text 2 Dream feature. In less than a minute, an image is returned tome showing what I've described.
Welcome to the world of AI image generation, where you can create what on the surface looks like top-rank artwork using just a few text prompts(提示). But closer examination shows oddities. The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there's an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there's no creative satisfaction.
AI image generation could impact everything from film to graphic novels and more. Children's illustrators were quick to raise concerns about the technology. They say AI-generated art is the exact opposite of what art is believed to be. Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it's about the final piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.
Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. To create images from prompts, AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that are intentionally meant to imitate the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others' work, However, a human artist is also adding emotion and nuance(细微差别) into the mix. AI doesn't do the same—it can only copy.
The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing of the work of artists. There's already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their "work" is as valid as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It's nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughters, but you are no match for professionals.
32. What does the writer think of his image creation
A. Exciting. B. Appealing C. Unsatisfying. D. Shocking.
33. What do children's illustrators value most about art
A. The creating process. B. The final work. C. Personal feelings. D. External forms.
34. What is Paragraph 4 of the text mainly about
A. The styles of human artworks and AI ones.
B. Human artists' influence on AI generators.
C. Different means used in human and AI art creation.
D. The drawbacks of drawing from existing art and text.
35. Which of the following best summarizes the last paragraph
A. Art is the mirror of life.
B. Rome is not built in a day.
C. No man can do two things at once.
D. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Philip found himself at a crossroads. Although Mrs. Ford, his head teacher, appreciated his stories, the label of "
nerd"(呆子) from his classmates cast a shadow over his passion for writing. Discouraged and feeling that his writing served no purpose in the eyes of others, he thought about giving it up.
One day, during recess(课间), as Philip was absentmindedly taking down some random events of the day, he heard an anxious voice calling out for help. He put down his pen, glanced out the window, and saw a gathering of people near the playground fence. With concern, he walked over and joined the crowd.
In the centre of the crowd was Robin, a sport y boy in the class, who was injured on the knee and bleeding heavily. Robin was playing kickball when the ball unexpectedly shot over the playground fence, landing in the old park next to the school. As he ran to get the ball, he tripped over the overgrown weeds, his left knee crashing into a broken bench. Robin's face paled, perhaps from both pain of the bleeding knee and his panic. Concerned classmates surrounded him, and Mrs. Ford hurried to the scene, providing some initial care before sending him to see the doctor.
Amidst the lively discussion of the crowd, Philip absorbed the information that the park had been abandoned for ages. Turning his attention to the park, he was astonished at its awful state. Overrun with weeds, broken benches, rusty sports facilities, and scattered rubbish, the park was practically a dangerous place for students.
Philip was probably a nerd when involved in reading or writing, but he was never ignorant of the world around him. He felt a strong desire to do something, and the only way he could think of was to pick up his pen.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next day witnessed Philip getting down to work.

根据第一段“In the end less sky, the unaided human eye should be able to perceive several thousand stars on a clear, dark night.(在一望无际的天空中,在一个晴朗、黑暗的夜晚,人类的肉眼应该能够看到几千颗星星)”以及划线词上文“Unfortunately, growing lightpollution has”可知,人类的肉眼本来可以看到几千颗星星,不幸的是,日益严重的光污染却使人们不能欣赏夜景。
根据第三段“Furthermore, the loss of visible stars is a great loss of human cultural heritage. Until relatively recently, humans throughout history had an impressive view of the starry night sky, and the effect of this nighty spectacle(壮观) is evident in ancient cultures.(此外,可见星星的损失是人类文化遗产的巨大损失。直到最近,历史上的人类都能看到令人印象深刻的星空,这种夜间奇观的影响在古代文化中很明显)”可知,可见星星的缺失会导致较少的夜间天空文化元素。故选D。
30.主旨大意题。根据第五段“Researchers find that the loss of visible stars indicates an increase in sky brightness of 9.6% per year while roughly 2% is measured by satellites. But these sources are significant contributors to sky glow us seen from the ground.(研究人员发现,可见恒星的消失表明天空亮度每年增加9.6%,而卫星测量的亮度大约为2%。现有的卫星不太适合测量人类看到的天光, 因为它们不能探测到短于500纳米的波长。白光 led 波长较短,在500 纳米以下, 现在越来越多地用于户外照明。但人类的眼睛在夜间对这些较短的波长更敏感。天基仪器也不能测量窗户发出的光。但这些光源是我们从地面上看到的天光的重要贡献者)”可推知,作者在第五段中强调了众包数据是无价的。故选A。
根据最后一段“The Globe at Night databaset is necessary in our ongoing evaluation of changes in sky glow, and we encourage whoever can to get involved to help protect the starry night sky.(全球夜间数据集对于我们持续评估天空辉光的变化是必要的, 我们鼓励任何可以参与的人来帮助保护星空)”可推断, Walker期望会有更多的参与者加入。
根据第二段中“But closer examination shows oddities, The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there's an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there's no creative satisfaction.(但仔细观察会发现一些奇怪的地方,我脑海中那个女人的脸有非常奇怪的特征, 似乎拿着多本书。而且,虽然看到图像出现时最初会感到兴奋,但没有创造性的满足感。)”可知, 作者对他的图像创作不满意, 故选C 项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it's about the fin AI piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.(从根本上说,艺术就是将你内在感受到的东西转化为外在存在的东西。无论采取何种形式,真正的艺术都关乎创作过程,而不是最终作品。简单地按下按钮来生成图像并不是一个创造性的过程。)”可知,儿童插画家最看重艺术创作过程, 因为艺术的核心是将内在感受转化为外在存在,真正的艺术更多地关注创作过程而不是最终作品,故选A项。
34.主旨大意题。根据文章第四段“Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. To create images from prompts,AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that are intentionally meant to imitate the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others' work, However, a human artist is also adding emotion and nuance (细微差别) into the mix. AI doesn't do the same—it can only copy.(除了创造力之外,还有更深层次的问题。
根据最后一段“The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing of the work of artists. There's already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their“work”is as valid as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It's nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughters, but you are no match for professionals.(人工智能的使用越来越多也会导致艺术家作品贬值。 A. Art is the mirror of life.(艺术是生活的镜子)B. Rome is not built in a day.(罗马不是一日建成的。 C. No man can do two things at once.(一心不可二用。) D. Jack of all trades, master of none.(百事皆通,一样不精。),故选B项。

A Week In the Wild
Last week, I, together with 30 other students, went to Yunan and took part in the Wildlife Protection winter camp held by WWF.
We spent one week in the wild rainforests learning about endangered animals from wildlife professionals. We observed how different species of monkeys adapted themselves to their natural habitats. Plus, various activities to help protect them have been organized, such as picking up plastics, removing nets and traps and putting up posters. We were amazed by the tireless efforts that the locals were making.
The camp not only raised our environmental awareness, but also deepened our understanding of wildlife protection. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we enjoy a better future together.
The next day witnessed Philip getting down to work. With a heavy heart, he wrote an article about the terrible condition of the park and the unfortunate incident involving Robin. Pouring his heart into the words, he appealed to the community to help restore the old park. Never before had he felt that words could be so powerful. Later that day, Philip handed the article to Mrs. Ford, who appreciated his deep concern for the park and managed to put the article on local news.
As the article spread, offers of help poured in. People went out of their way to donate materials and help fix the broken facilities. Philip's classmates were impressed by the changes taking place in the park, astonished that his effort could make such a significant difference. Once labeled a "nerd", Philip was now admired as a source of inspiration. Seeing the old park transformed into an inviting place, Philip was glad he hadn't quit writing. It turned out that writing could be put to practical use.
