As a geothermal (地热)scientist, I know that boiling rivers exist-but they are always near volcanoes. You need a lot of heat to make that much water boil. We were working in the volcanic gap, a 950-mile-long arca that covers most of Peru, where there haven't been volcanic eruptions for the past two million years.
Yet, we'd found the Shanaya, a name originated from “heating thing”. My measurements averaged 190°F-195°F. The locals think it's so hot because of the Yacumama, or “water mother”-a spirit who gives birth to waters-represented by a snake-head-shaped rock at the origin of the heated water.
I had to cut my way through the bush at the side of the river to take temperature readings. All the while, right next to me was this very hot, fast-flowing body of water. A friend at the nearest village had told me, “Use your feet like eyes. " You can't see heat, but you can feeI it when you step near it. I wore sandals(凉鞋).
I was at a part of the river measuring 210°F, standing on a rock the size of a sheet or paper, when the rain fell. It was like a curtain rising. The temperature difference between the rain and the river caused a whiteout(临时性失明). I couldn't see, but I whistled to let my partner know I was OK.
At 130°F, flesh cooks, and the water around me was nearing twice that. My eyes would have cooked in less than a minute, and I couldn't have seen how to get out. I saw rats fall in, their eyes turning milky white. I kept whistling.
After 15 minutes the rain stopped and the steam cleared. A heavy rain in most situations would have been nothing important. Here, for a matter of minutes, it thinned the line between researching and being boiled alive.
24. What do the locals think causes the water so hot
A. The high temperature. B. An imaginary creature.
C. The volcanic eruptions. D. The geological conditions.
25. Why did the author cut his way through the bush beside the river
A. To get some related data.
B. To look into wildlife around the river.
C. To know about the quality of the water.
D. To appreciate the beautiful scenery there.
26. For what reason did the author whistle when it rained
A. He was in trouble.
B. He could stand on a rock.
C. Nothing was wrong with him.
D. He liked the natural phenomenon.
27. What is the best title for the article
A. A Hard Rain B. Milky White Eyes
C. Boiling River D. Water near Volcanoes
C
In the coming era of budget(预算)cuts to education, distance learning could become a common thing.
The appeal to those in charge of education budgets to trade teachers for technology is so strong that they tend to ignore the disadvantages of distance learning. School facilities are expensive to build and maintain, and teachers are expensive to employ. It's true that online classes do not require buildings and each class can host hundreds of people, which can result in greater savings, but moving away from a traditional classroom in which a living, breathing human being teaches and interacts with students daily would be a disaster.
Physically attending school has hidden benefits: getting up every morning interacting with peers, and building relationships with teachers are important skills to cultivate(培养)in young people. Moreover, schools are more than simple places of traditional learning. They are also places that provide meals, places where students receive mental help and other support.
Those policy-makers are often fascinated by the latest technology in education and its potential to transform education overnight. But online education does not allow a teacher to keep a struggling student after class and offer help. Educational videos may deliver academic content, but they are unable to make eye contact or assess a student's level of engagement. Distance education will never match the personal teaching in a traditional classroom. In their first 18 years of life, American children spend only 9% of their time in school. Yet teachers are expected to prepare them to be responsible citizens, cultivate their social skills, encourage successful time management, and enhance their capacity to compete in a competitive job market. Given these expectations, schools should not become permanently “remote”.
The power of the classroom is rooted in the qualities of the people gathered in the same place, at the same time, including their nature, empathy, devotion and so on. Technology, no matter how advanced, should simply be a tool of a good teacher.
28. What is one possible benefit of students attending school physically
A. Forming the habit of getting up early.
B. Eating nutritionally well-balanced meals.
C. Growing into living and breathing human beings.
D. Developing relationships with peers and teachers.
29. What does the author think of the latest technology in education
A. It may reduce face-to-face interaction.
B. It may make many teachers jobless.
C. It may add to student's financial burden.
D. It may revolutionize classroom teaching.
30. What does the author say teachers are expected to do
A. To enhance student's leadership capacity.
B. To teach students skills in applying for jobs.
C. To enable students to adapt to the changes in life.
D. To prepare students to be competitive in the future.
31. Why couldn't technology replace a good teacher
A. It lacks humanity.
B. It can't meet personal needs.
C. It is still not advanced.
D. It can't track students' growth.
D
According to a recent report, people aged between 16 and 24 make up about 15 percent of the population but only 10 percent of museum-goers. Similarly, people aged over 35 go half as much as you would expect from their population size. We have reached the point of recognizing the disconnection between art and the audience but haven't yet determined how to bridge the gap. Two answers to dealing with this challenge lie in telling a greater diversity of art histories and communicating these stories in much easier ways.
In 2022, a radio program called Art Matters was started with the aim of discussing art from a pop-culture viewpoint with topics that would attract younger and more diverse audience. It offers an access to art history with conversations on different topics. Art history is about storytelling; art content shines when there is an effort to bring audience along for the discussion.
More traditional organizations are paying attention. Recently the Getty Museum issued a social-media challenge for people to recreate paintings using items they had at home. To their amazement, users displayed incredible creativity and involvement. This reaction set an example for other museums and galleries, proving that there is a potential desire for the audience to connect with art topics if the type of activity is appealing. Since many people feel intimidated and think that it requires a base level of understanding to join the conversation, the Getty Museum serves as a reminder that there are many pathways to engaging with it.
Social media have offered a platform for people who have not traditionally had a seat at the table. Anyone can recognize a gap in the field and address it. Accounts have gathered tens of thousands of followers, which proves that there is hunger to hear these art histories, and these themes work brilliantly for museum programming.
32. What challenge is the author trying to deal with
A. People doubt a great diversity of artworks.
B. Fewer and fewer young people go to museums.
C. Art appears too distant from common audience.
D. Adult audience has a different understanding of art.
33. In the author's opinion, what should the museums and galleries do
A. They should recognize the disconnection between art and the audience.
B. They should make the art history stories accessible in a traditional way.
C. They should change meaningfully for activities like the Getty challenge.
D. They should limit the number of storytellers both in and out of organizations.
34. What does the underlined word “intimidated" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Tired. B. Annoyed. C. Surprised. D. Worried.
35. What conclusion about common audience can we draw from the passage
A. They feel satisfied with current museums and galleries.
B. They lack the channels to understand and talk about art history.
C. They refuse to engage with diverse art topics and art history stories.
D. They would rather view artworks and hear art stories on social media.

It was in the bleak midwinter, and the travelling couple struggled through the cold night, seeking shelter. The father-to-be scanned the roadside for some home, some inn where his struggling companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her frequently. She labored along, her way made heavier by the new life growing inside her. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind. When her time came, it must not be out here along the roadway. Their names were not Mary and Joseph, but Pepper and Cooper. Nor were they man and wife, but rather a pair of dogs, and the place was on a rural highway outside of town.
That December night, Gus Kiebel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see, but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags. What were they doing out here on this road
He parked his truck and approached the animals. Gus squatted(蹲下)and stretched out his hands to the dogs, which made no effort to escape, Gus read their tags by his truck’s headlights. He pulled out his phone to call the number listed, but it was snowing so hard that his screen blurred(模糊不清的). He placed the dogs in his truck, on the floor of the passenger side. By the time he came around to the driver5s side, he found that they had climbed onto the passenger seat and were snuggled (依偎)together there. Gus dried his phone, took a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife, Katie Kiebel. Then he dialed the number from the dogs’ tags. A man answered and immediately grew defensive when Gus told him why he was calling.
“I gave those dogs away,” the man said. “They’re not mine anymore. ”
“Well, do you want them back ” Gus asked.
“No. I can’t take care of them. ” The man answered.

第一节 应用文写作(满分10分)
Good afternoon, everyone,
I am honored to get first prize in the English speech contest.
I think it was my determination and efforts that contributed to my success in the contest. In the last two years, I have tried my best to practice my spoken English. And my English teacher’s encouragement and help made me who I am today.
In a word, all I want to say is that we mustn’t give up whatever we decide to do. Only if we persevere can we achieve our goals.
Thank you very much!
第二节 读后续写(满分20分)
Then the man hung up. Gus then tried calling the county dog warden’s office. Being after hours, the best he could do was leave a message, but what to do next Gus had always wanted beagles as pets, but he and his wife already had a dog and couldn’t take on two more. With nothing left to do, he called Katie.
“You cannot put them back in the snow,” Katie said. Katie told Gus to bring them home, which is probably what he was hoping to hear anyway but just wanted confirmation. Once there, the good-hearted couple prepared a bed for the Cooper and Pepper on their warm, enclosed porch. They also set out food and water for them to replenish their energy. The exhausted dogs snuggled together, Cooper lifting his weary head from time to time to fuss over Pepper. The two would spend the night there, safe and warm, until morning came.
