When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about e-waste. The article said that people were throwing away their e-waste in places it should never go. This was dangerous, the article said, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and metals like lead. These harmful substances (物质) can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies—and people.
Alex showed the article to a few of his classmates. They were worried too. But what could they do about this problem with e-waste How would they even start “The first thing we did,” Alex says, “was to learn more about the problem.” Alex and his friends spent several weeks gathering information about the chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose (处理) of e-waste properly and how it could be recycled. “Then,” he says, “we had to find out what the situation was in our town. So we sent out a survey.”
What they found shocked them: Of the people who answered the survey, only one in eight even knew what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of it. Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. The drive lasted two days, and they collected over 21,000 pounds of e-waste.
The next step was to set up an e-waste drop-off center for the town and to find a responsible company to recycle the waste. That was when Alex and his friends learned another scary fact about e-waste—some irresponsible recycling companies don’t break down the e-waste and dispose of it safely themselves. Instead, they ship it overseas to countries such as China and Nigeria, where local environmental laws are not applied. “We checked carefully online to make sure the company we chose didn’t do this,” Alex says.
Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s poisonous trash.”
24. What can we learn about Alex from paragraph 1 and paragraph 2
A.He was curious about chemistry experiments.
B.He possessed a strong sense of responsibility.
C.He set out to solve the problem individually.
D.He formed the habit of reading newspapers.
25. What does the underlined word “drive” mean
A.campaign B.imagination C.performance D.technology
26. Why did some companies transport the e-waste to other countries
A.Lack of available space was the reason for shipping.
B.Recycling was totally banned in their own country.
C.They were running their companies on a tight budget.
D.They were not charged with insecurely disposing it.
27. What’s the suitable title for the text
A.Reusing School Computers B.Recycling Electronic Waste
C.Meeting a challenge D.Doing scientific experiment

Researchers say the world has lost more than one fourth of its land- based insects over the past 30 years. The finding comes from a major study of insect populations worldwide. The researchers noted the loss of such insects suggests a more complex problem than earlier research has shown.
Ants, bees, butterflies and other land-based insects have been suffering population drops to about nine percent every 10 years or so. The number of insects on average has declined in the air, in the grass and soil, but not in trees or underground, the researchers found. Some estimates show that land-based insects will face a population drop of 24 percent in the next 30 years. The researchers did not find a link to climate change in the loss of insects. But they did note the widespread effects of growing cities and loss of underdeveloped areas to agriculture.
However, freshwater insects, such as dragonflies and mosquitoes, have been a different story. These insects were found to have experienced a population increase of about 1 percent every 10 years. Freshwater covers only 2.5 percent of the Earth's surface, so the majority of insects live mainly on land. The researchers said clean-water policies established in recent years were responsible for the increase in freshwater insects.
"The decline(下降) across insect orders on land is very surprising," said Nick Haddad, an expert on plant butterflies at the Michigan State University. He was not involved in the study. Ongoing decline on land at this rate will be extremely damaging for ecological system and for humans. Haddad told the Associated Press, he noted that insects are pollinators (传粉昆虫). They move pollen(花粉) from parts of the flower of a plant to another part. This causes the plant to produce fruit or seeds. Insects also help to break down dead plants and animals. Nick Haddad added that insects also serve as food to many animals, making them very important to the earth's ecosystems.
Other scientists said the findings made sense. They would go on with the study with more accurate data.
28. What is the finding of the study mainly about
A. The disturbance of the earth' s ecosystems.
B. The diversity of creatures in the world.
C. The complexity of studying land-based insects.
D. The change in the number of insects worldwide.
29. What was the main cause of the insects' situation according to the author
A. Human activity. B. Climate change.
C. A lack of freshwater. D. Frequent natural disasters.
30. Why does the author say freshwater insects have been a different story
A. They reproduce very quickly.
B. Their habitat has been protected.
C. Their population is in the minority.
D. They can live both on land and in water.
31. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The relationship between insects and plants.
B. The importance of insects to the ecosystems.
C. The significance of further studying insects.
D Human's influence on the decline of wildlife.
D
The ability to use the left hand is referred to as left-handedness. Left-handedness is actually more common in the male population than in females. There is an amount of untrue information about them.
It is difficult for left-handed children to learn writing of the alphabet, without personal guidance. Not true at all. Take the left-handed kids for example. Everyone else is more bothered about his left-handedness than he himself is. The left-handed child adapts to writing, drawing and all other activities that require him to hold a writing tool as early as the right-handed. In fact, many left-handed people display neater handwriting than their right-handed partners.
Left-handed people have a lesser chance of surviving a hand-to-hand fight. This is anything but true. History has witnessed the advantage left-handedness had during hand-to-hand fights and even within the boxing ring. In fact, a common sight is that the left-handed fighter is able to attack their opponents by surprise on the open, unprotected right side.
Left-handed people are many a time at the disadvantage of using tools designed for the right-handed. Well, this is true, but today, there is a whole range of tools and equipment being designed for left-handed people. Many right-handed tools too are available, such that they can be changed to suit the needs of the left-handed craftsman (工匠). Even the computer mouse has been changed in use and the touch pad provides a left-handed professional equal opportunity.
Research shows that left-handed people are in fact high achievers. This is because their brains are structured to widen their abilities. A number of mathematical, artistic and sporting masters were and are left-handed. However, most left-handed people over the world, might have, at some stage in their life, been on the receiving end of an uncomplimentary (贬损的) remark or comment regarding their choice of hand. I am sure this list and discussion above would be reasonable enough to be proud of being left-handed.
32. In comparison with right-handed children, what can we learn about left-handed ones
A. Left-handed children find it hard to learn writing.
B. Left-handed children are tired of the left-handedness.
C. Left-handed children are used to writing tools too late.
D. Plenty of left-handed children can write more beautifully.
33. What advantage do left-handed people have in hand-to-hand fights
A. They could start a surprise attack with their left hands.
B. They could attack their partners’ left sides surprisingly.
C. They have a better chance to beat their partners in history.
D. They are good at fighting especially within the boxing ring.
34. What is the computer mouse mentioned to show us
A. Left-handed people are in fact high achievers.
B. Left-handed people have many disadvantages.
C. Many tools are designed for the left-handed people.
D. Many left-handed people receive bad remarks daily.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. History of left-handed people.
B. Advantages of left-handed people.
C. False facts about left-handed people.
D. Discussion about left-handed people.

Jack still remembers that one morning when he was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Lily. Jack was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first, he thought nothing of it since customers' voice in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone shouted.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Jack opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Lily, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Lily stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Jack had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Lily had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik. Lily began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Jack could see many of their neighbors — some still in their pajamas (睡衣)— running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She might have run for safety like everyone else!” Jack cried. However, Lily refused to give up. “I know Makcik's still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

读后续写
Just at that time, Jack noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane's hand tightly. Both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Jack begged Lily to run for safety as quickly as possible. Lily tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Jack burst out crying.
Luckily, when they went downstairs, all the neighbors were there and an ambulance came. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Lily 's mind. She told them Ms. Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs and then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Lily and Jack were very happy.
